Recruiting problems in order of likelihood:

1. Rumor is that there is heavy negative recruiting around Hugh's cancer diagnosis. That combined with possible termination for performance has made everyone worry that Freeze won't return next year.

2. There is clearly some aspect of the new NIL/Shared revenue situation that Auburn either is not dirty enough to exploit or is not smart enough to exploit. Another way of looking at it is that we are following rules some other teams are ignoring amidst unclear NCAA guidance.

3. Auburn has been bad for a long time.

4. The loss of Charles Kelly may be more significant than we realize. Aldridge as well.

The problem is that even if we are very good this year (please let us be good), we may be so far behind the recruiting 8 ball that we can't recover well. A weak class is not the end of the world, but it sucks in the moment, especially when it could have been an excellent class. If we win a lot of games I'm sure Hugh will grab some high caliber flips, but the number of blue chips just won't get very high.

Is Freezes cancer diagnoses being used against him by other teams?

100% it has. In fact, that’s the number 1 thing other coaches are bringing up according to insiders. If Freeze has a great season, it could be flipped on these negative recruiting coaches though.

What is wild to me is how quickly for both Carter and Toodle things shifted. They both told our staff on their OV's a week and a half or so ago that they were completely locked in. Then bam, full flip.

After last year anything outside of the top 5 will be a disappointment.

This year we have to hope we can pull a Mario Cristobal: 62nd to 12 or something

I don't believe that. We have 3 recruiting classes now of depth, and can't sell open spots. We are adjusting to the House ruling. I expect us to wait later, take a smaller class, and pay heavily on them. Future trends are for everyone to take less risk on HS recruits.

Part of it is we can’t sell immediate playing time like we once could.

Part of it is Hugh’s cancer diagnosis. There have been rumors he’d step down for 6-7 months now and they’re being used against us.

Part of it is we’re taking our time figuring out how the revenue sharing stuff is going to play out.

That's the boogie man we always use. He has prostate cancer. It's not being used against him. Nobody does conspiracy theories like us. It's just a fact we can't sell playing time, and there isn't enough money to keep your upper classmen and a loaded recruiting class. We will do fine, it will just be later, and Huge has to win. There are no other excuses.

I don't keep up much anymore, but damn the recruiting is looking horrible. I have to wonder if Hugh has checked out. I mean I can't really blame him if he has with his diagnosis

And yes other coaches are using it against him. I heard Hugh say this during a presser even before he publicly announced the diagnosis.

Win and this goes away. The good news is that I think we have the roster to make people pay for this negative bullshite.

The state of AL is also down vs the past few years. There isn't a Cam in there. There no reason to overpay for a 4*, IMO.

Other programs are using it somewhat. Not that he has cancer, but that he may possibly step down after this season.

I believe it’s unfounded, but it also wouldn’t completely shock me if it happened.

So another under .500 season?

I hope you are wrong. We have spent about 50 million just in extra coaching fees the past 5 years so we could be more competitive with Georgia and Alabama. Accepting a 6-7 season, again, seems to be contrary to that goal

Neither can Georgia or UGA or Texas, but they seem to be raking them in.

You talking about the two teams making playoff appearances? I guess you glossed over the line I typed about Huge needs to win

I realize recruiting has a long way to go and possible to get flips back, but it’s not feeling very good at the moment. Hopium is waning.
