2008 was the worst Auburn recruiting class ever. Ever.
Missed it by 10 years.

Cut’n’paste from the Recruiting Eagle (site will give your phone monkeypox, so I won’t link it):
quote:

Recent news is that seven and popssibly 8 of the Auburn recruits will not be eligible this year. Details on each player is indicated below. This is a serious problem for the Tigers and their player depth. There will not be as many quality players this year (think back to how many true freshmen have player the last few years) and in the next few years depth will be a problem in the upper classes as well. I am concerned that Auburn is not screening their recruits well enough to prevent such problems. They are taking chances on marginal scholars with the hopes they wil be a great athlete.
Now understand that the class was ranked 7th in the SEC (out of 10 teams) BEFORE subtracting the 8 ineligible signees.

There were a couple of impact players, including JUCO transfer Ronnie Daniels, and future 4-year starting C Ben Nowland, the only OL signed that year (whom we “flipped” from Yale, who doesn’t offer scholarships for athletics). But other than them and a couple of others, most of the class wasn’t even on the team by the time AU opened the 1999 season.

Was that Terry Bowden's work? Seems like his classes weren't great, and usually included miniature RBs

I think that was the Bowden/Oliver/Tuberville combo class, correct?

No, that was Bowden’s last complete class, signed on the heels of a 10-win, SEC West champion season.

I remember he lost out on his #1 QB target to Tennessee - who ended up posting these eye-popping career numbers

Cheers Freep and thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Perspective and all and talking football with 60ish or 20ish "fans" is a real thing.

Maybe because you are 33 years of age and don't know a lot of shite? Love / hate you Jang, but I might just be right. You do you bro, but if you get called out for (insert most anything AU-related here) , you probably deserve it.

Totally different quality of recruits back then. The kids weren't really just all gathering at 2-3 schools to create super teams. Not that Tubs was a great recruiter but the recruiting services without video like today weren't as in touch outside of the region. So coaches would be more familiar with 3 stars then that were better then some of the 4 and 5 stars that were getting more attention. Recruiting rankings aren't perfect now but they are damned close because there is just so much information and availability to the public. Plus kids as young as sophomores in high school if they have the talent know they need to hit the camp circuits.

But yes 06, 07, and 08 Tubs really started to fall off recruiting.

That '07 OL class was legit. Was the real story behind the BCS run. Cam would probably agree.

People forget what a crappy talent evaluator Tubs was when it came to QBs. He had one real talented recruit in 10 years - Jason Campbell. His next best QB signee was a low 4* who had a serious disease that prevented him from suiting up for a year after he signed. The rest were non-contributors.

Anywho

Yes, Corch you are right. High recruiting rankings weren’t there but the classes were more well rounded even if players weren’t ballyhooed. There were some bad classes though. See 2004’s.

I know what you’re say and agree.

But compared to this staff, Tubs staff were Ace recruiters

Any idea who they’re going to hire? I thought they fired Gus too late in the season. Much like early signing day, it’s better to go ahead and fire a guy early and start shopping.

I actually said that to our staff makes Tubs look like an ace recruiter.

Maybe I could’ve added a couple more spaces to avoid any more triggering.

After jetgate, then going undefeated in 2004, got a huge raise and buyout, and quit giving a shite
