If you count Leota, in addition to James and our Nose Tackle. That's a decent start. I agree it doesn't go far beyond that. I think there was a guy from Kansas St on the defensive line who played. The wide receiver from Georgia was decent. I hope Freeze can significantly exceed this in just one class.
Bruh...you are counting guys that Harsin signed over 3-4 different transfer portal "periods" and comparing it to what Freeze has done in transfer portal window #1 which hasn't even closed yet.
Leota was signed when Harsin was literally just hired, whereas James and Jayson Jones were signed in his second year on the job.
No shite, ~2 years of transfer portal recruiting is going to result in more additions than ~1 month of transfer portal recruiting

Harsin had more signing clases than Freeze at Auburn???
Maybe Harsin was low key Nick Saban after all.

I'm just trying to give Harsin full credit for what he got in the portal, in preparation for evaluating how Freeze does. I understand that Harsin had 2 portal seasons. But the portal has never been what it is this season, and we didn't have NIL. And we weren't as desperate for a rebuild. I'm just saying that Freeze needs to kill it over the next 2 weeks, and it's fair to use Harsin's 2 portal classes together as a bar.

You are asking for 10 impact players from Freeze this recruiting cycle from portal and Harsin in two recruiting classes can take credit for 2-3, maybe four and that's without doing any research and I might be generous in my number. Not contributors or depth players, but Impact players.
Jonesy or others who are more informed will probably be able to tell you 10 impact players through portal is highly unlikely in one recruiting season. That's just me guessing.

I think when you’re a head coach like Lincoln Riley, heading from a top P5 program in OU to another one at USC - there’s a shot at bringing in a lot of top transfers quickly.
Not sure Freeze going from Liberty to AU fits that profile, but as I said yesterday, only about 36% of portal transfers have committed so far so there’s a whole lot left to be accounted for.

Tommy Brown hit the portal the very beginning of 2022 as well. He went to Colorado. Was a legacy I believe.
Just a testament to what many of you have said about OL recruiting, even tough to evaluate when they are 4 and 5 stars.
So what is the board's thought on Damien George?

Any comparison still needs to be scaled to reflect timeframe properly, otherwise what are you doing?
Here are your actual facts: Eku Leota and Dreshun Miller were the only players landed by Harsin during the "winter" transfer portal window in year #1, which is what Freeze is currently in. Demetris Robertson, Jordon Ingram, TJ Finley, Marcus Harris, Donovan Kaufman, Bydarrius Knighten, and Tony Fair were all signed during the spring transfer window (ie: mid-to-late May 2021).
Now, it does need to be mentioned that that first transfer portal class was wonky because players were forced to wait until the spring for the NCAA to officially pass the ruling that would make transfers immediately eligible to play if they chose to transfer. So this is why so much activity ended up getting backlogged towards the spring period, so that first year isn't a fair comparison for Harsin.
But even when you look at his second year at Auburn, his WINTER transfer window additions were: Zach Calzada, DJ James, Jayson Jones, and Eugene Asante. That is only 4 guys. Hugh Freeze is currently at 3 additions, and that number will grow over the next ~2 weeks.
If you look at actually filling "needs", it's hard to say because Freeze's first transfer window isn't complete. But LT Dillon Wade is the most important transfer landed by either Harsin OR Freeze, and given that AU has 4 more OL visits lined up this week, it seems to imply that Freeze is already on a better track than Harsin ever was in terms of landing the RIGHT players. But again, this one needs to be reserved till we see how Freeze closes here. Harsin didn't do much in terms of filling the actual holes on the team; that first class of his included 3 transfer DB's - which was essentially just shuffling the chairs on the deck. He of course did nothing over two years in terms of adding OL.
Finally - on NIL: this needs to be continuously repeated and brought back down to earth. We do NOT have that much money left over for this current class. We do NOT have a "warchest". Auburn's NIL numbers (the $13-14 million that is reported) are pledges over 3 years, and they include some amounts that are for basketball and baseball. For this 2022 football class, we are close to capped. I do believe that there is money left over that was set away for Russaw and James Smith, but other than that, people need to understand that we do not have some bottomless wallet to just start playing around with. 2022 money went towards paying certain players on the team, and it also went to some of the notable HS signees. I'm sure Dillon Wade is probably getting something.
If anyone is of the expectation that Freeze has millions of dollars to land transfer portal targets, it is simply not the case.

I just want to make clear that was not my quote...

Great points meta.
I kept saying we have to pay attention to the good ones we came to the dance with before we start offering all the others.
I gotta believe thats why some of these good players are hitting the portal with some teams, these teams going out and offering newcomers money without watching their flanks.
Interesting note on Russaw and Smith. I heard a coach say one of the many issues regrading NIL would be boosters targeting money specifically for recruits, and then pressuring coaches to play them (not speaking of Russaw or Smith). It was in reference to getting a QB and demanding he take the starting position even if a coach did not think he was ready.

We offered a Portal WR that entered the portal just today
Jamari Thrash from Georgia State
Jamari had a big year last year.

That's good info. I was surprised when I started listing Harsin's transfers that the list was better than I remembered. I also remember being completely annoyed in the 2nd winter portal window with how lazy our effort seemed to be. I probably let the embarrassment of our high school recruiting taint my perception. We needed a QB and a wide receiver, and we took cast-offs for both (Moore and Calzada). That told me we weren't able to play with the big boys.
I know that based on the numbers we have heard, our NIL is limited. I feel like Freeze is the guy the boosters wanted, and so they need to open their wallets and make up whatever we lack in order to be competitive now. If we are bargain hunting because we are a middle class program, then we need to set our expectations as such. Maybe Freeze can MoneyBall us to a championship, but I'd prefer to just be more talented than our oponents.
It sounds like Freeze is all over OL portal recruiting. That's probably a good place to put our money if we are having to make hard NIL choices. We can get by on scrappy defense if the offense is lethal.

quote:No he didn't... Harsin lost our starting legacy QB to the portal and recruited the 4th string QB from the team he went to. He lost our no.1 WR. Harsin lost more in the portal than he brought in and did nothing to address positions of need, particularly Oline. Harsin left the roster in absolute shambles. He's the worst coach we've had since the great depression.
I was very down on Harsin when he let certain positions go unaddressed or poorly addressed in the portal. But if I'm being fair, Harsin did more in the portal than Freeze has done so far.
Look at what national recruiting services said... AU is a signing day WINNER... when's the last time you heard that? Freeze has hit Oline well between JUCO and the portal given the circumstances. Realistically with a couple LBs and a QB emerging we have 9-3 / 8-4 potential next year which would be a great outcome.
Right now we need:
(1) LB - Bodies literally anyone who can contribute. We're at the point where big safeties or small edges should/could get a shot at LB. Maybe a big WR who played in HS... it's worked before.
(2) OL - We're bringing in several at this point. We got one of the top JUCO linemen and one of the top transfers and are still in the hunt for a couple of other top transfers which would be huge
(3) QB - Ideally we take a single proven winner
(4) DL - Rotational depth... we're not going to get some badass pass rusher out of the portal but need bodies to rotate into the 4th quarter

These next two weeks are going to be as busy as the period leading up to the ole time national signing day. Fun times back in recruiting.

Can’t be said enough that just losing Nix alone made Harsin’s portal endeavors a net negative.
I know we had a bunch of smooth brains here who thought Bo was bad or his father was a nefarious mafia like figure - but Harsin lost a legitimate Heisman contender level *legacy* QB to the portal and replaced him with other program’s trash.

Big news: Wake Forest transfer Edge Rondell Bothroyd is visiting today.
He had 6 sacks this past season, and 8 sacks in 2021.

I thought Bo was a huge loss but it’s very clear he wasn’t staying. He accomplished all he could here and it probably was going to get worse in 22 or the same.
He has proven his decision was a very good one. My stance will always be Harsin couldn’t have done anything to keep Bo at the end of that season. Nothing nefarious or because of any nix family. He knew he had no OL or WR worth a damn. A retard could see he was leaving to improve his image and stock with the NFL.
Doesn’t excuse Harsin for his failures. Just a good business choice by Bo Nix.
Don’t worry my only comment on nix.
