Unfortunately it’s going to take a few seasons for people to get the allusion out of their minds that the portal can solve our problems. Best case scenarios are guys like Jayson Jones or DJ James that have some upside and can start. Most will be depth chart replacements for the guys that just left.
This is blatantly wrong. There are difference maker players in the portal. The issue is, we just aren't getting them. It looks bad. The O'Cyrus Torrence kid is a 3-year starter on a 10+ win team, one of the highest graded players at his position in the country, All-Conference, blah, blah, blah. He is an immediate starter who would move the needle. Mason Brooks is a tier below that, but is similar and a clear upgrade over someone like Troxell. Both guys have ~2 years eligibility too.
The issue is that we're just getting whipped right now. Not that the portal is overrated or that it's stupid to target ready-built players.
DJ James and Jayson Jones are legitimately great pulls, but the issue is that once again they're not at the positions we need massive help at.

Jan 29th will be junior (2023) day for Auburn. KN pointed out that Auburn will likely have kids on campus every weekend leading up to February since February is a dead period
Mentioned this yesterday. With 2023 being so strong along the DL, I would be surprised if we didn’t have a DL coach hired before the 29th. Just something to think about

DL coach will wait until several NFL teams are out of the playoffs, unfortunately. That's where the first look will be.

Made the top 8 for ‘23 3*/4* LB Troy Ford from Savannah, GA.
I believe he was loosely related to Eason. He’s a guy to watch as Auburn recruits down the LB board this spring and summer

Hopefully the cards lose sooner than later

They're looking at Henderson from the Chargers as well. I don't expect a quick hire there because they're shooting big with NFL guys. They won't rush anything regardless of when JR day is.

Probably right. jt33 caught this yesterday but I’ve had poor awareness that we’re nearly half way through January already

Al.com on Caden Story
We’ll have to track the visits and see what ultimately happens with him
quote:
Both Story and Clifford Story, his father and coach at Lanett, reiterated his commitment to AL.com on Thursday afternoon. “I’m still committed to Auburn,” Story said, “I don’t plan on decommitting. I’m still looking into things to see if Auburn is still the place for me, but as of right now, that’s the place.”

He's spewing a bunch of crap. The general consensus is that he doesn't even have a spot anymore. Maybe that changes if they miss elsewhere, but the stuff about "oh I'm still committed but looking" is no different than his dad saying that he didn't sign on early signing day because they didn't schedule a ceremony. He didn't sign because he was told they wouldn't accept his signing.
The talk behind the scenes is that he and his dad fell for some BS "interest" from Georgia and Bama and the staff yanked him after they found out. But Georgia and Bama were never going to offer him anyway. He is massively overrated as mentioned a few times so the staff wasn't even heartbroken to yank him. Now he's looking around for somewhere else to sign.

I’ll be interested to see where he visits the next couple of weeks

More possibly frustrating portal news — KN hears more chatter that Mason Brooks could follow his OC to Texas Tech.
Doesn't sound like an imminent deal but that was always one of the landing spots for Brooks.
Also not sure but KN has been posting updates pretty regularly for the past 2 days.
Might be a good sign for him sticking around 247

I'm increasingly convinced that Troxell and Brahms coming back is a result of misses elsewhere. As if these guys needed ~3 weeks to decide whether they would play another season. A guy like Troxell they probably had no interest in bringing back...until it became a necessity.

If you're not a fan of bad news the Auburn recruiting thread probably isn't the place for you.
May I point you to the basketball thread instead?

This staff is still struggling with recruiting. Despite the strong finish with the recruiting class, which is still middle of the road in the SEC, they struggled all year and mainly hit on kids that were interested or committed to schools with coaching changes.
They’re missing on important transfers. Obviously.
This isn’t a promising look.
You can say I’m melting or whatever, but I’m just calling it how it is.
We went into the bowl game and offseason with obvious issues at WR and OL, and nothing has been addressed at those positions. We’re missing on ours guys.
