For Auburn DB coach Marcus Woodson, another big commitment (247)
quote:

When Auburn hired Marcus Woodson to help coach the secondary in January, it didn’t create a lot of buzz.

He didn’t have a big name. He was coming from Memphis, a non-Power 5 program. Little was known about him, and in particular, what kind of recruiter he would be.

But now seven months later, Woodson’s selection is making Auburn coach Gus Malzahn look pretty smart. On the recruiting trail, Auburn’s young assistant has made quite the splash.

On Wednesday, Auburn landed 4-star defensive back Cam'Ron Kelly of Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith. The 6-feet-1, 190-pound Kelly is the No. 13 athlete and No. 177 overall recruit nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite.

Woodson, 37 and a former Ole Miss player, was Kelly’s lead recruiter.

For Woodson, Kellly’s addition to the class gives him four commitments thus far. With three of them, he was the lead/area recruiter. Two of those verbals have come from Mississippi, which is Woodson’s home state.

Thus far, these are Kelly’s gets …

-Kelly — primary recruiter: One of the highest-rated defensive players on the Auburn commit list, he likely will play corner but is versatile enough to line up just about anywhere in the secondary. He’s a former Virginia Tech commitment.

-Jaren Handy, DE/DT, Hattiesburg (Miss.) — primary recruiter: With Woodson’s work, Auburn got in on Handy, the No. 109 recruit nationally, earlier this year. From there, it was a tag-team effort between Woodson, defensive line coach Rodney Garner and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele. Handy was among the most heavily recruited prospects in the Southeast.

-Jamond Gordon, DE/DT, Meridian (Miss.) — primary recruiter: Gordon is a former Ole Miss commit. Woodson, Garner and Steele are were instrumental in that flip. Gordon has a 3-star rating, but Auburn made him a priority recruit.

-Zion Puckett, CB, Griffin (Ga.) Spalding — secondary recruiter: Garner was area recruiter, but according to Puckett he was closer to Woodson than any coach on the Auburn staff. The Tigers were not much of a factor when Woodson arrived. Last week, he committed to them over Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee and others.

Woodson may not be done.

Most notably, he is lead recruiter for 4-star Auburn buck linebacker target Derick Hall of Gulfport (Miss.). During the recruiting process, he has gotten to know Hall and his family well.

As recently as last week, Hall told Auburn Undercover that the Tigers were his leader.

Additionally, Woodson continues to work hard on 5-star linebacker Nakobe Dean of Horn Lake (Miss.). Dean plans to officially visit the Tigers this fall. Dean said this spring Woodson was closer to his mother than any coach recruiting him.

Woodson’s primary recruiting areas are the state of Mississippi, Memphis (Tenn) and northwest-central Alabama.

-NOTE: Before Kelly’s commitment, Woodson ranked 69th nationally in the 247Sports recruiter rankings. We’ll add his new ranking to this story once the rankings update.

Pretty amazing the affect Greg Brown is having on this young guy's recruiting prowess....

New Auburn commit Kelly a "dangerous player" (247)
quote:

The Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith coaching staff had a meeting on Sunday and floating around the stadium was new Auburn commit Cam'Ron Kelly.

“He loves the game,” defensive coordinator Joe Jones said.

“The thing I like most about Cam is he’s determined. He’s determined to win. He’ll do anything he has to do to win. He’ll work hard, he’ll come in on Sundays when everyone else is off.”

Kelly will also do anything asked on the field.

The future Tiger is Oscar Smith's starting quarterback. He’s obviously a standout in the secondary. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Kelly has lined up at running and receiver. He blitzes off the edge, he’s a tone-setter as a tackler, a fluid athlete that whether he’s on offense or defense attacks the football in the air.

Kelly shines in the biggest moments too. He helped lead Oscar Smith to the state championship game last fall and was big in the finale. Kelly scored a touchdown rushing and receiving and had a big fourth quarter interception in what ended up being a 28-21 loss to the now three-time defending champion Westfield. Kelly is showing up to the complex on Sundays doing everything he can to make sure it's them that wins the last game this fall.

“There’s nowhere you can’t put him on the field he can’t be successful,” Jones said.

Ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 13 athlete and No. 177 prospect overall, Kelly was recruited by Gus Malzahn and his staff to play cornerback. Similar to what he’s done at Oscar Smith, Jones believes Kelly could make a difference all over the secondary for the Tigers.

“He has a big frame,” Jones said. “In high school he’s fast and can jump. I think his skill set will also allow him to move to safety. He can play in the box, has the ability to play in the box. With his speed and ball skills that makes him a very dangerous player.”

Auburn’s class rises to No. 8 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings with Kelly in the fold. He announced his decision on Wednesday afternoon while also celebrating his mother's birthday. Commit No. 16, he is the eighth in this class to rank inside the Top247 Player Rankings.

Following a visit to see the Tigers in late July, Auburn started trending for the blue-chip recruit who was also at one point committed to Virginia Tech. Holding over 40 offers total, Kelly also had scholarships from the likes of Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Stanford, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Jones added that Kelly is also a “3.8, 3.9 student.”

The class that keeps on giving. I'm getting spoiled at this point. I almost expect there to be a next commitment every few days now lol... Besides the Cox flip, who else is coming up?

No set dates on anybody but names to watch

4* Buck Derick Hall
4* WR Jalen Curry
3* DB Nehemiah Pritchett
3* S Kenny Logan

Top one is only sure take. Curry probably has a spot but doesn't sound like set in stone. Other two want in but can't yet. Cox is probably the next one tho

Woodson and Brown have put serious work in!! Brown’s resume cannot be matched IMO.
People can pretend to know better, but they are only pretending!

Woodson gets his foot in the door. But Brown is the closer! THREE THORPE winners, coaching at schools with little to no fanfare can’t be matched!!
