I don't think JLee understands a "Best Guess" closing

He adds people like Netori Johnson saying things like "It will be hard to flip but if anyone has a chance it is Auburn".....

If the guy isn't a likely member of the class he shouldn't be on your best guess close

5 more top 250 players including #1 overall CB and 3 more 4* players isn't a good closing for defense?

I mean, we were only 7-6 last year

I'm still curious about Wootens cryptic tweet...who the top player that will commit.

I think our definition of "top player" and HS recruits' definitions are different.

I assume he meant Tre McKitty and/or Brahms

I'm pretty sure he's upset because the guy's name isn't actually 'Bread'

If we exclusively refer to him as Bread Stevens, it becomes his name I think.

Pretty sure that's how it works

KN's "Predicting the Class" July Edition.

QB - 4* Tray Bishop
QB - Unknown

RB - 4* Devan Barrett
RB/ATH - 4* Alaric Williams (Has work to do academically)
RB/ATH - JUCO Octavius Mathews (Could play RB or WR)

WR - JUCO Brandon Martin
WR - 4* Jeremiah Holloman (UGA biggest threat)

TE - 3* Tre McKitty (Announces this week)

OT - 5* Calvin Ashley
OT - 4* Austin Troxell
OG/C - 4* Nick Brahms
OT - JUCO D'Marcus Hayes (AU would like to add a 3rd tackle probably one from JUCO Moo State / Arky major threats)

DE/DT - 4* Ryan Johnson (Grew up an AU fan Bama is a threat along with Duke and Stanford)
DE/DT - 4* MJ Webb (He loves AU and is close with staff. USCe and Tenn will make it interesting)
DE - JUCO Isaiah Buggs (Darkhorse pick had a strong multi-day visit to AU in JUNE. LSU still the favorite right now)
DE - 3* Guy Thomas (Many think he'll leave the state. AU worked close with him at Miami satellite camp)

LB - 4* Tadarian Moultry
LB - 3* Chandle Wooten (Could be due for a ratings bump)
LB - 4* Will Ignot
LB - 4* Kenny Britt (AU commits are working on Britt. Could go a number of ways)
LB/DE - 3* Tyler Taylor (At 6'3 240lbs he could play a number of positions, but does AU have a spot for him?)

CB - 4* Malcom Askew
CB - 4* A.J Terrell (Confidence isn't high here but AU has Terrell at the top of their board. Florida Clemson and UGA will push. Terrell and parents are close with Wesley McGriff)

S - 3* Carlito Conzalez
S - 4* Devon Hunter (AU is a sleeper to watch)

LS - Bill Taylor
PK - Anders Carlson

I've actually seen that we're in pretty decent shape for Devon Hunter. He could very well visit again for the picnic.

None of this matters if we crap the bed this year. But, if we exceed expectations, even by a smidgen, this class can really take off.

QB & DL are the main ?'s. I have faith in Garner. Rhett, not so much. I know kids seem to like the guy. Yet, the development issue is what is killing us.

More than anything, we need solid QB play from whoever. Not only for W's & L's, but to quiet some of the Nega recruiting being used against Rhett.

Probably doesn't help that we waffle our focus on pocket passing and dual threat capabilities

It seems that we can't figure out wtf type of system we run then get caught in themiddle

personally I have felt that the development thing was overblown based on 1 bad year (this year).

If you look at the QBs that played while Gus was coaching them, last year was his only major fail.

Chris Todd- Set records, and not much talent to speak of.
Cam- GOAT
Trotter- Wasn't very good but I've seen worse. Certainly not the most talented feller.
Aplin- Damn good and got better his final year with Gus.
NM- bauce who showed major, major improvement from his first start til the time he left Auburn.

Gus hasn't developed a QB that elevates the offense through pocket passing. Todd, Trotter and White all lead teams that were 7-8 wins w/ few quality Ws despite not looking "bad." Regarding Aplin, he

The most confusing to me isn't the DT v PP debate but that Gus' system values arm strength yet forgets during recruiting/QB selection. Everytime Gus discusses his offense, he talks about vertical stretching and downfield passing. Looking at Yards/Att, both adjusted and not, Gus consistently has nationally top or increases compared to previous coach.

So how is it that a coach who values rocket arms has Chris Todd, Barrett Trotter, Clint Moseley and Sean White as starters? This isn't hating them, just pointing out that they aren't going to be the poster boys for downfield throwing

I'll agree with you but he needs to find his niche, whether it revolve around mobile quarterbacks or more pass oriented. Recruit those guys instead of taking a bunch of both and trying to wing it. I still believe that Malzahn can get things going in the right direction and I think things were getting there with Muschamp on the other side of the ball running shite. We need a competent defense to compete year in and year out and we need to figure out our offensive identity before a few games into the season each year.

History tells us it's mobile quarterbacks, and it's not even close.

In fact, those two mobile passers (Cam Newton and Nick Marshall) were better passers than the pocket passers (Barrett Trotter, Clint Moseley, Jeremy Johnson, Sean White, Chris Todd), especially against serious competition. Why? We know why the NFL MVP was able to rip apart defense. Nick Marshall? I think it's obvious his running ability opened up a lot in the passing game.

Compared to 2008, Gus Malzahn did wonders with Chris Todd...but he looked bad against good competition. He compiled the majority of his stats against teams that weren't good.

I agree with this too but he needs to understand this when recruiting guys. Don't take a pocket passer for the sake of taking a quarterback if you can't use him.
