Isn't this true for a lot of teams? Seems every year there is a highly ranked guy many teams think they will get and miss out. Basically anyone not named Bama are going to miss out on a lot of their top targets because they are battling other big time programs. That's just recruiting.... I don't think this is a unique AU thing, I just think our misses seem bigger because we follow AU closer.

Also I have already posted in past that Brannigan's rants against Garner as DL recruiter are dumb as we have signed plenty of talent. People were melting earlier this cycle because it was looking like Marlon and Jackson were both gonna be misses but we landed both. I will agree with him that Garner has not done a great job developing pass rushers but he has been fine as a recruiter

OK, the staff rates Gary (who many consider the best player in the country) and Brown (who many consider the best player in the state of GA) higher than Jackson.

That means that Jackson is NOT 'a top DT'? (Note the difference between 'the top DT' and 'a top DT', please.)

No one said we strike out on every top DT, just that every year we get our hopes up and recruit hard a 5* type guy that we actually had no shot at in hindsight.

It wasn't an all inclusive argument that we never sign top DTs. That is factually incorrect. We don't sign multiple or depth for that matter

We have won recruiting battles and signed talented players. Auburn has not signed llenty of talent. Roster management has been a big issue on DL

We only had 5 scholarship DT this year with only 4 playable (Johnson FR coming off ACL)

We don't have a shot with Gary but we do with Derrick Brown.

Sounds like we lead with Brown after reading KNs last post.

Saw where Brown and Jackson were supposed to room together at the Army AAB... instead Browns with Rochester.

Kinda shitty luck there

Not when 1/2 have been converted to potentially athletic DT's.

Tough to project whether a kid who is 16, and 6'-04"/265, and still growing. Unless you just sign the most athletic, and roll with it.

It is hard when guys like Thornton don't make it early. Highly ranked kid, with a decent frame, but can't gain a lb if momma made steak w/ gravy every night!

It is somewhat simple to make generic statements like yours. But, when you check the details, it changes the calculus just a smidge.

If you had a clue about what REALLY goes on w/ recruiting, it would rattle your cage IMO. Most can't stomach it, yet it has always, and will always go on. Even with the good kids, whose mommas get involved, there is the "Uncle". 90% have one, and it won't change.

What the hell are you talking about, dude? The guy who I *directly* responded to said this:

quote:

Every year this board loves to pretend like we have a shot at a top DT, and every year they go elsewhere.

What else does that mean but that we never sign a top DT, i.e. we strike out on every highly-rated DT?

If you had read my post in the context of WHO I RESPONDED TO maybe you wouldn't be so confused?

quote:

It wasn't an all inclusive argument that we never sign top DTs.

I'll be damned if it wasn't.

It would be nice to keep the 2016 recruiting thread about 2016 recruiting... we can all debate the ups and downs of garner and the DL.

We seem to be addressing the DL needs win this class... and have three potential impact guys for next year (James, Jackson, Davidson) enrolling in January.

We just need a way for posters to mark their post as info or comments. That way people looking for info can spot them and by pass everything else and people who want to debate still can too. Maybe starting the post with a symbol or Bold the few words for recruiting news post.

That DE play/development is NOT weak, per se. (Or "per se'" for Sand'man'bitch)

There is very little understanding, as to what it REALLY takes to sign some kids.

The most vocal antagonists, seem to always have the least info.

We don't get sacks, we lose contain on QBs and aren't stout against the run.

Adding "per se" doesn't make us any better at any of those

He made this point by showing the DTs we got and the DTs we didn't get in the last few years?

I don't think that was his point
