So obviously getting way ahead here but I highly doubt CeCe, Key, Cowart, and Prince would all come here even if they wanted to. If we could only take 3 of those 4 which 3 would we want most?

Per KN 247

Just chatted briefly with a well-respected person on our business, and he believes the Thompson hiring will help Auburn dramatically with 5-star DE CeCe Jefferson.

On thing about Thompson: He apparently is close with Jefferson's father -- and that is the most important person besides CeCe in this recruitment.

Mushcamp also is tight with the father.

I keep hearing Florida may not be at the moment.

Take that for what it's worth ....

I skimmed over the last 12 pages or so. Am I correct in thinking that AU is now positioned to have a HUGE signing day?

I haven't followed recruiting too closely in the past, but in recent memory has AU ever over-signed on NSD? Would we ever see Gus and co. greyshirt some of the 3* guys if it meant getting more 5 and 4*s?

Finally, based on what is out there, which recruits/targets could come in and make an immediate impact?

I would choose CeCe, Cowart, and Prince.

I love Key, but if we already have CeCe and Cowart, I would rather take the gamble on Prince's freakish athletic ability.

With the new info about Boom and Thompson being tight with Cece's dad and he being a big part of the recruitment, I could see us landing all 4 now (not predicting it yet though). 1 true DE, 2 Buck hybrids, and 1 that could be a DE, DT, or a TE.

I think most are gonna say Cece, Byron, and Key but my answer is Cece, Byron, and Prince.

I won't believe Irvin is visiting until he actually shows up... I'm sure he's getting tons of pressure from strong and staff to not OV. that's why sometimes it's just best for everyone to keep quiet on some do these visits.

It's a hard choice. Key and Prince are a little more raw so I'd have to eliminate one of those. Both could be really good though

Also, I need the negabarners to start being more nega. I don't like when this thread gets too positive. Usually means disappointment is coming.

Won't matter anyways. If CeCe or Cowart sign with us, they won't qualify. We should just move on.

This isn't the NFL.
I wasn't the one who first brought up the NFL.
quote:

The point is; if those guys can be elite NFL players at ~2 inches taller, do you seriously believe that an inch or two
Two inches taller usually means two inches longer arm length. Matt Elam has extremely long arms for his size.
quote:

going to determine whether Irvin can be an impact player in the SEC?
Four inches could have been the difference in Davis knocking the ball out of the hands of Benjamin last January.
quote:

Its not that big a deal, seriously.
All I said was it was concerning. I made one post about it before the NFL comparisons started getting thrown out by two separate posters. A second response earned another 5 responses from 5 different posters. Seems everyone else are the ones making the big deal about it.
quote:

He measured 5'9 and 7/8ths.
You're right. However...

"Really, the only downside is his height and there’s nothing you can do about that,” Mayock said. "I put the Tennessee tape on and the tight end, Mychal Rivera, beat him down the seam twice. And it wasn’t that he beat him down the seam, because it was really good coverage. It was just that they threw the ball up high and Rivera went and got it. So it's not as if my concern about Irvin being 5'8 is unwarranted.

Matt's arms measured in at 32 5/8" long which indicates that his relative arm length is in the upper 26% (His arms are longer than 74% of all Safeties in the NFL) Also from that link:
quote:

Elam's height in inches was 5'10" 95% (he's taller than 6% of all Safeties)
So 5'10 and shorter safties aren't all that common in the NFL. Posters cherry pick some of the elite but the overall average says that it's unlikely 5'10 or shorter safeties are lining each roster.

quote:

but Boom and Strong are 2 of the best defensive minds in college football and I value both their opinions on Irvin
Sorry if I've heard this song and dance a multitude times over the past 6 years and don't just "trust the coaches." Trusting the coaches left us with zero pass rush this year.

quote:

He's 17. It's not out of the question he could grow a few inches in college.
He absolutely can and I hope he does.

quote:

Jimmie Ward
He's listed at 5'11
More correctly though, he measured in at 5'10.5
quote:

Lemarcus Joyner
5* and top 15 player in the country coming out of HS.
quote:

Matt Elam
5* and top 25 player in the country coming out of HS.
quote:

Earl Thomas
Already been discussed.
quote:

Ahmad Black
Shrunk 2" since HS

So is that 4 players since 2009? 2 of which were 5*s? Well that certainly boosts my confidence.

Like I already said, I hope Irvin will be an AA and proves me wrong. My concern with a 5'8 safety certainly has merit and let's just leave it at that.

I also find it humorous after all the bitching about Chizik recruiting undersized secondary players, now recruiting a 5'8 safety isn't something that should be questioned.

Very possible
quote:

AU ever over-signed on NSD?
There tecnically is not oversigning anymore. Greyshirt does not signing anything. It's just delaying enrollment to the following January
quote:

Would we ever see Gus and co. greyshirt some of the 3* guys if it meant getting more 5 and 4*s?
Yes. Ian Shannon will greyshirt and that appears to be a final decison on him.
quote:

IMO

Jovon
Cox
Ivey
Cece
Byron
Beckner
Swain

His high school coach and AU insiders who are right far more than not have said he was OVing AU.

Oh, I'm not doubting he's told his coach he's gonna visit... but that still leaves time to back out.

You know as well as I do that visits can be a very fluid thing.

True but AU has all the mojo right now and TI is very close with T-Rob and I like the chances of T-Rob closing this one out.

Have we pretty much given up on CVO?

It would be a pretty bitter pill to swallow if we finished 2nd for him and Ivey after doing so for Payne and Thompson on the other side of the ball.
