Looking at Rivals rankings, Mason was still the 199th overall ranked player, so it's not like he was some nobody. When you're considered one of the best 250 high school players in the nation, you're really, really good, no matter where you are on that list.

Blakely just didn't have it up top. He didn't want it. And Hart may have been a real player, but had knee surgery twice. That's hard to overcome for anybody.

Mason was set to go to Ole Miss b/c it appeared AU wouldn't have a spot for him... he wasn't being pursued by any of the big 3 FL schools... and IIRC, he was a 3-star for most of the process.

i'd like to know what that last ranking came out... and where he would've been ranked had he committed to OM.

Last week has spoiled me. Half way through Monday and no new commitment rumors!

Hoke said in a Jovon Robinson thread that he'll be shocked if Jovon isn't committed by the end of May, and that he almost pulled the trigger at A-Day. Sounds like he's just waiting for BCW

I went with Rivals, since that was the most respected recruiting service in 2011. 247 was in it's infancy at that point, and the 268 is their composite score, so you're talking about Scout and ESPN rankings there.

LINK

What they had to say about him -

On the Hoof: Solidly built with the frame to add more weight. He definitely looks like a back that can carry the ball 20 times in a game. Physically, he is similar to Miami running back Eduardo Clements.

Needs Improvement: Mason needs to work on lowering the shoulder pads just before contact thus reducing the number of hard hits he takes. Has a tendency to stretch the play, looking for the home run, instead of taking what is given to him. He needs to make more runs between the tackles.

Most Impressive: His top-end speed is excellent as he can pull away in the open field from most defensive backs. He is also an excellent receiver coming out of the backfield. But his forte is that one cut to make the initial tackler miss and cutting it back across the grain for big yardage.

Conclusion: Look for him to outperform more highly recruited backs. But before this happens he will need to improve his pass blocking. I look for him to be a surprise performer similar to Montel Harris of Boston College.

I think we all pretty much feel the same as him...

Makes me feel even better knowing Justin Hoke is really close with the situation.

His OVs were West Virginia, Ole Miss, and AU... he was a low-4/ high-3 star type player from all the services... and pretty far down the RB lists (14 on rivals was probably the highest... 23 on 247).

regardless, most everyone saw him as a tier behind Blakely and Hart...

When Tre Mason was being recruited and first arrived on campus, I think we all agreed upon him being the replacement for Onterio McCalebb... That's pretty much what he did during the 2011 season until Mike Dyer was suspended for the Chick-Fil-A bowl against Virginia. IMO, he succeeded expectations.

I believe not only did he succeed expectations but exceeded them as well...

Are we, or should we be, concerned with our LB recruiting so far this cycle?

From a stars standpoint, we've been "meh" so far. I think it's a must to go ahead and get Jeff Holland when it's time for him to commit.

I feel like we will end up with Mcbryde and WIlliams. They're good and i'll be glad to have them but missing on Holland and Ro would sting

I'm a little worried, but I think the staff can pull holland so that helps some.

Last I heard on Jovon was it could literally happen any day within the next 2 months.

Well we haven't missed on anybody yet so it's a little early to be concerned. Roquan is looking like a UGA lean but I think we snag Holland. Then we can choose McBryde or Williams (most likely McBryde)and be done for this cycle. I would be happy with that.
