I fully agree the term I told my wife was this is pathetic.I guess I just thought that BVG would make our D a force to reckon with immediately.

Agree but havent we heard this same story for two years now about tackling? I just dont get how they dont know how to tackle properly by now or even when they first get to AU. How would they get scholarships if they didnt?

Meh. It was a handful of missed tackles that has everyone up in arms about. Bates makes a tackle on 3rd/17, Holland makes a tackle on Ellington, Boyd gets sacked 2 more times, and Auburn wins, no one talks about missed tackles, and we give up 100 less yards rushing.
You're talking about maybe 6/7 plays out of the 87 they ran.

It was moved to the Classics board, and rightfully so.

I expected better on Sat, but I knew there would be a learning curve, especially when you open up against an offense like that. The missed tackles are the most disappointing thing to me, however take the good with the bad. We improved, for the most part, on 3rd down defense. Still have to get that % lower, but it wasn't the 50%+ that we'd been giving up last year game after game.
And the red zone D was much better than last year. Holding them to field goals saved that game from being a blowout. Last year's D most likely would have given up at least 2-3 more TD's.
There were moments where the DL just mowed over their line. That 3rd and long that Bates got the sack comes to mind. That's the kind of thing that makes me say.....ok, there's a play that shows what they CAN do. Now they have to do those things consistently, and that will take a few games to happen. The interior DL and LB's have to play better though to be able to compete against teams that are going to run the ball.

BVG not happy with the tackling...

VanGorder said he expected his defense to be "good, bad, ugly" in its first game as it learned a new scheme. "The objective was to cut down on the ugly. Maybe the one thing that surprised me a little bit was our tackling. I didn't expect to be so poor,"

That wasn't an under throw, I believe. When a DB is running stride for stride with a WR in man coverage the QB is sometimes taught to under throw the WR and let him adjust to the ball that the DB can't possibly be looking for. Basically the same concept as the now popular back shoulder fade throw.......I'm PRETTY sure he did the exact same thing on the throw to the end zone to Emory Blake that Emory jumped for and missed. If he wouldn't have jumped he would've caught that pass too.
I agree with the fact that he threw it behind him on purpose, but it was an underthrow in the sense that he threw it way too far behind him. If he gives the ball just a bit more gas then Coates is able to come back and get it.
But most of this stuff is just a young QB working his way through things, along with young WR. It takes time and experience for both to get a feel for each other and make things happen effortlessly. Hopefully now he;s got his first game jitters out of the way Frazier will settle down nicely for Miss St.

Fairley became the college game's most dominant lineman under him, and Clayton and Blanc -- two guys who I had barely heard of until 2010 -- became more than serviceable. Did Rocker have everything to do with their success? Probably not. But you can't convince me he didn't play a MASSIVE part in it. Our DTs were very active with their hands and actually shed blockers under Rocker, especially in 2010. I never saw any of this last year in Pelton's first year, and I didn't see it Sat. night.
Mike Blanc was the starter in 2009, along with Jake Ricks. Clayton was hurt most of 2009.
As for active hands and technique, Rocker did not really care about that stuff. He demanded maximum effort on every play, which is why he is good for the NFL. Max effort works when you have 5 seniors and a 1st round jr on the line. But look at what he taught to Whitaker and Carter, almost nothing.

I;d agree for the most part there. I think a bigger issue for me was players being extremely passive rather than making plays, and the biggest thing of all was our LBs and a particular safety taking horrible routes to the ball and showing poor awareness over and over again. While our poor DT play was somewhat to blame, the poor angles taken by Bates, Holland, and Smith were largely responsible for Ellington destroying us for 200+ yards.
Hopefully we start seeing Florence in for Smith, and a fair bit of Therezie and Frost. Of course we'll find out more about our defense when we aren't playing nickel for most of the game as well.

A disaster like only completing 40% of his passes thrown. Oh wait, we already say that.

Hey guys. I found the problem.
Rhoads vs. Roof
For junior starting middle linebacker Josh Bynes, the difference between former defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads and new DC Ted Roof comes down to flying.
“(Rhoads) wanted us to break down and make tackles,” Bynes said. “Whereas, Roof wants to fly. Roof is the type of guy who will let us go full speed. If you miss, at least you miss full speed. Rhoads was the type who wanted us to break down and make sure we make the proper tackle.”
Bynes says the flying better suits his game. It’s also a lot more fun.
“Oh yeah. You get to dive over the top of piles and things like that,” he said. “When it’s a group tackle, somebody come flying full speed, it’s great because you see a lot of hats to the ball.”

The fly technique works when you're playing a team that isn't in your talent level. If you're playing a team that's as talented or more talented it makes your look foolish.
Can we go pay an insane amount of money for Rhoads to come back as DC?

Rhoades sucked too. Just not nearly as bad as Roof. I remember people be excited about Roof's tackling technique.

Rhoades (sp?) D was very good in 2008, our offense could not do anything but 3 and out and that D kept us in several games that shouldn't have been close.
