I'm not sure what McCann has left in the tank but I think Donaldson could have a good bounce back season

Agreed. He isn't trying to grab an extra $23 mil on the way out he wants to have a "prove it" season and re establish his value for a final big contract. Then we have Austin Riley moving up at 3rd.

BTW, laugh all you want, but Donaldson will have the highest salary of any Braves player next year, including more than Freddie.

So what? Acuna will probably be the best player on next year's roster and he'll make like $650K. You pay a higher annual salary to a FA if you offer a short term deal. It's the nature of the beast.

They have money that needs to be spent. What other FA out there other than Machado/Harper has the potential to have an impact like Donaldson? AJ Pollock? Michael Brantley? Those guys have huge injury red flags as well, and they aren't the same caliber of player.

A Realmuto deal wasn't happening without giving up a massive haul. The Fish are asking for the moon. frick 'em. Let some other team pay the ransom.

The deal isn't without its risks, obviously, but it's a worthwhile gamble with no long-term impact.

Camargo likely should and will stick around as a super-utility Omar Infante/Martin Prado-type, which was sorely needed. I mean we had Ryan Flaherty getting postseason ABs last season. The horror...

Donaldson is only 32, not that old for a hitter.

Small sample size, but this is what he did for Cleveland after the trade last year.

.280/.400/.520, .396 wOBA, 149 wRC, 16.7 K%, 16.7 BB%

Those are elite numbers, and if he is healthy for even 120 games next year, thats a huge boost, and a legitimate clean up hitter.

Yeah, I think a lot of other fanbases are wondering why their team did not sign Donaldson to this deal.

McCann and flowers both suck now. I’m curious to see if the Braves plan to role with these guys as their starters.

yep.

maybe Donaldson gets hurt. maybe he doesn't. but anyone who thinks that this was a bad deal by the Braves is out of their mind. This could potentially be the best signing of the entire off season by any team if you take into account money, years, and production.

big changes everywhere. apparently they are moving Francoeur permanently to TV as the primary "analyst" while Simpson is getting pushed over to the radio side. I'm not shocked that they are changing things up on radio broadcast since Sutton is up there in age and clearly struggling (while not going on the road trips), but I figured Frenchy would be the one to take over there. With Simpson being inducted into the Braves hall of fame, I'm surprised they had the stones to make this move.

Now if we can just get rid of Chip...

That might almost be better news than the Donaldson signing.....almost. Frenchie is really good, so thats a big step up. Need to get Medlen to do more games. He was fantastic in that little bit of time last year.

I missed the Medlen games apparently. I think I watched maybe 140 games or so last year but had a 2-3 week period where I was on the road for work followed by a family vacation.

I think Frenchy is really good, but I'm not a fan of Glavine in the booth, so it's disappointing that he is getting more time.

I'd like to see Ben Ingram or Jim Powell shifted over to TV for the play-by-play gig.

Don't think Simpson helped himself very much last season. Really embarrassed himself with that Dodgers BP attire meltdown.

All I have to say right now is thanks for keeping this thread updated with offseason moves/trades. Worked out great for me as I had a meeting with some people at the MLB league office where got pop-quizzed on my thoughts on Braves trade moves. Fortunately, I'd been reading this board on the flight in.

Really surprising news. But we all know Simpsons comments about the dodgers and Soto played a part in it. He was already becoming a little too "get off my lawn" lately. Frenchy has been a pleasant surprise in the booth. Very knowledgeable and does a great job explaining situations and what players are going through. Really happy with this decision.

quote:

Simpson said he was “surprised” by the extent of the change. “I had proposed cutting back, but my proposal was a lot different than theirs,” Simpson said. “I was suggesting maybe cutting back to like 120 TV games, hoping to fill in the rest with some radio. But they’ve cut me back to 20 or 30 TV games with the rest being radio, so that came as a surprise.” Fox Sports South/Southeast general manager Jeff Genthner and Braves CEO Derek Schiller described the change as a joint decision by the network and the team. Genthner said Francoeur will work about 100 TV games, “plus or minus 10 games.” Former Braves pitcher Tom Glavine also will work an increased number of games as an analyst, Genthner said. Chip Caray will remain the TV play-by-play announcer.

His comments about the Dodgers were very unfounded but I didn't disagree with what he said about Soto

the funny thing about the Dodgers comments is that not long after that, the Braves showed up and took batting practice in t-shirts. Simpson didn't say a word.
