They are free to ask for whatever they want.

I want Trout and Simba for Dansby and Ruiz.

Acuna

At what point will he be in an actual Braves uniform? I mean, we've got limited time before the Yankees buy him out from under us.

I'm sorry, man.

The Yankees and the lack of a salary cap leading to the richest team buying who they want, when they want, is what led me away from really paying much attention to baseball. They let guys cut their teeth at another franchise, watching closely and knowing that as soon as he's a free agent, he's a Yankee. It sucks.

I hope you realize that the Yankees are playing against a cap. The luxury tax cap, and they do not go over it. In fact, they havent made hardly any big splashes in free agency in a while, and they are still paying for mishaps like Ellsbury.

Honestly, no. I didn't. How long has that been a thing?

1997 was the first year, but it has been modified since. You can see an explanation of it below. The luxury tax is the main reason the Dodgers traded for Matt Kemp. They lumped 40+ mil in 2018 salary to us, so they could get under it. They only have to pay Kemp 21ish this year and 21ish next year, which helps them out.

The latest FanGraphs articles (the projections and the article re: how we should jump into seriously trying to win starting this year) along with all the prospect rankings list are getting me pretty giddy about spring training.

The Yankees have definitely changed the way they do business. They can still spend much more than most teams, but they aren't simply loading up on every free agent stud that becomes available.

It is looking like a buyers market right now. They can get Moustakas for a not ridiculous contract. Hope they do so.

Yeah, since George died, Cashman can actually build their organization, and its scary what he has done. Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Gleybar Torres, Miguel Andujar, Aaron Judge, Clint Frazier, Luis Severino, Dellin Betances, and Jordan Montgomery are all home grown guys that will make an impact for them. Thats not counting Chance Adams, Estevan Florial, Justus Sheffield, Domingo Acevedo, and Albert Abreu who are all damn good prospects in their minors.

Thats scary good.

Nobody is - Red Sox, Cubs, Phillies, Angels, Yankees even the Dodgers.

The Yankees stopped doing it a bit earlier than the Red Sox and Dodgers, but there isn't anybody in baseball handing out long, expensive deals knowing that the last 2-3 years will be wasted. Those days are gone.

I honestly don't think that's going to happen. Now, it will happen with certain guys - Machado and Harper mainly. Blackmon, Bumgarner, Pollack and Kershaw. Maybe even Kimbrel. But a lot of those guys? They are going to be facing the same stuff a lot of guys are this year.

Daniel Murphy, Josh Donaldson, McCutchen, Adam Jones, Allen, Miller, Britton.............those guys are going to want 4-5 year deals. That just isn't going to happen. Teams won't do that anymore. And, the next step will be seeing if those guys will blink and take big 2 year deals. So far, guys in the current cycle haven't bitten.

The whole trading of risks with young, talented kids contracts have pushed free agency back to around age 30 for a lot of guys. And, with SABR now running all of baseball, nobody is going to pay a 31 year old over 5 years. Nobody.

Okay, maybe I did know this, but I don't think it stopped them for some time. They still managed to scoop up numerous players over the years that had become All-Stars with other teams, the Braves being one of note (which is where my recollection is coming from). Maybe it's not as prevalent as I feel like it is. Most recent ones that come to mind were Tex and McCann. But I think there were others that aren't on the top of my mind.

Who was the owner then? George. He dead now. His sons arent as gung ho about it. Plus, you can see that the Yankees have paid over 300 million on the luxury tax since it was implemented. The restrictions are high if you continue to go over them year after year.
