I concur on John’s character. I met him in Knoxville about 15 years ago at at Calhouns. A guy I went to was their show producer at the time. We hung out together for a few hours before the game and we met them again after the game, again at Calhouns. John shared his cancer experiences with me during part of the chit chat. Flash forward 5 years later and I was diagnosed with Stage IV Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma. I sent John an email and said that I doubt that he would remember me but we hung out at Calhouns a few years back with so and so. I told him that I had just got diagnosed with Lymphoma and that I hope that my outcome was as good as his. This was on a Saturday evening. He emailed me back within an hour and said for me to email him my number because he wanted to talk to me early the next morning when he was done prepping for his Sunday national show. He called at 7:30am and we talked for 30 minutes. He kept calling me back over the next few months until I told him I was in the clear. Never talked to him again after that but that dude didn’t owe me anything to begin with. But I knew the quality of his character from how he invested encouragement to a guy he had met once in his life.

think 680's ratings have been fine
They were getting crushed by 92.9 in Arbitron... barely cracked a 1.0 most quarters. They were probably getting by on those numbers pre Covid but I'm sure
revenues took a hit.

Yeah, they don't use Arbitron though so I don't know how their ratings compare to 929's. Not saying you're wrong, but I don't know how to compare the ratings.
I think a lot of it was 1340. 680's other station that had Hutson, Hometeam, and Joe Hamilton. They were barely drawing any revenue to offset any other loss. Rodney Ho mentioned that in his article. David Dickey runs a pretty tight ship financially but not even he is immune to the COVID hit.

Here is 680's new lineup, effective tomorrow. Straight from Rodney Ho:
So they hire 5 new folks and fire 2 others to "cut costs?"
Shapiro and Kincade must have been making a shitload.
I'm assuming the FM station is not gonna be around. They must of paid that talent peanuts.

YES!!! Best news all year. Send the Yankees back north & hopefully they take Buck with’em. Worst damn sports station out there. Sandra Golden??

They may of been Yankees but they were the unquestioned kings of Atlanta sports radio and very good at what they did. On that there is no debate. And Kincade is a good man on top of it. Hate it for him.
Yeah they were both making a crapload. I'm kinda shocked Chernoff wasn't part of the budget cuts b/c he makes a pretty penny, also.
It wasn't 93.7, that's just their FM streaming station for 680. I was referring to 1340 AM, the SportsX. For now they are gonna simulcast 680 while DD looks for new talent to put on the air. He's using 1340 as a minor league so to speak.

Not what I'm talking about. This is what Rodney Ho mentioned.
106.3

Chernoff is a clown and isn't close to the talent of Kincade or Steak.I can't
imagine paying him anywhere close to those guys or even Chuck Oliver.
Must have have a good agent if true.
Posted on 9/20/20 at 8:25 pm to RD Dawg
You're right. The SportsXtra went strictly to an FM signal several months ago and made their 1340 frequency strictly ESPN radio. That's who you were referring to earlier. I apologize.
I like Oliver. I know he can be an acquired taste due to his accent but his CFB takes/insider knowledge is amongst the best anywhere(Buck included) and I'd put his general football knowledge against anybody.
And we'll disagree on Chernoff. Guy is a pro's pro but we do agree that he's no Steak or John .
And the 5 "others" were already on the payroll at DBC. They just got promoted from 106.3 to the mothership

I was looking at it as 680 thing but you're correct about those guys being under the DBC umbrella.Still must be a huge pay disparity.
You have any idea what Steak or Kincade
were getting paid?

I just find him particularly obnoxious with little insight...he just seems very cliche.I have met em in person and he seemed like a good guy.I knew Mitch Evans (Shapiro) a while ago...also a very good guy.

I don't. Although I think its safe to say that it was in the 6 digits, maybe upper 6 digits in Steaks case. That would be a good Open Record request.
I have met John on numerous occasions over the years. Great guy. I think a lot of his haters would be surprised how approachable and outgoing he is. He's a Good man. 2X cancer survivor to boot. Only met Steak once, seemed like a good guy.

I'd say mid 6 figures for each.Had a relative who worked for WSB radio in the 80's and 90's and she made low six figures back then. It's changed a lot since those days though
So I'm assuming you were guessing about Chernoff's salary
I had some friends who played a round of golf with Kincade...said the same
thing you said about em.

While probably true I just find him annoying as hell on the radio. When he starts a sentence "Atlanta fans need to..." We don't need advice from a philly fan. Philly fan giving other fans advice is like Rosie O'Donnell telling someone not to be a stupid fat bitch. He is almost as bad as Colin Cowherd to me and I guess thats his roll, to piss people off. ie "Buck, why did all the Atlanta fans want to trade Soroka for Realmuto" then say it over and over....I don't know one person that wanted that trade. Best of luck to the guy.

I like JK a lot. I don't really get why the Philly thing is so bothersome, it keeps things entertaining. He can be annoying, but he's a great radio host.
Steak I can live without and Zinno just wasn't very good at radio IMO. Sure he's a nice guy but he just didn't ever seem that comfortable.
The 790 guys are the most annoying by far but they're good at their jobs. It's just a very different style than southern sports talk and I'm sure not everyone is a fan.
I love Joe Hamilton. But he's pretty bad. I'm sure he'll improve, but him and Brandon - yikes.

Yeah, I don't get why people let the Philly thing w/John bother them so much. He ain't even from intown Philly. He's from Brumhall in Delaware County, 20 miles SW of downtown Philly. Regardless, John was the best radio host in this town not named Cadillac Jack(bring back Caddy).
And I get Steak being an acquired taste. I liked him but I understand those who didn't. But you couldn't find a better replacement for him then John Michaels IMO.
And I liked Zin.

Yep. I wonder how Chernoff wasn't canned. He goofs off way too much.

It was strictly salary related. Obviously Steaky and John made the 2 highest salaries at 680. Thus, they got laid off.

My favorite Atlanta show has been gone for years but it Tony Barnhart and Wes Durham. They had a great college football show back in the day.

Can someone explain how radio ratings work? not exactly a bi-directional media.

I didn’t like John early on but he became one of my favorite hosts. He would always call a spade a spade and be the first to acknowledge when he was wrong. I was really surprised of that firing. He won’t have a problem finding additional work as has the national show and the podcast with Shaq.
I understand Steak’s role in Atlanta radio and appreciate it. I couldn’t/wouldn’t listen to any show he was on. IMO he is awful.
I like Zinno and hope he catches on somewhere. I think Atlanta is probably the wrong market for him.
