This is a better start than I anticipated prior to the season tbh. I expected to be sitting 9-3 or 8-4 right now.

Yet, here we are at 11-1 heading into SEC play. 9-9 in league play puts us at 21-10 overall which is better than I expected.

The Arkansas in me still remembers a Pelphrey team that impressed during OOC games and went on to only win 2 league games, so I’m still hesitant to get excited.

You’ve gotta think we sweep aTm(2 wins), split with LSU(3 win), take care of Vandy(4 wins), take care of SC(5 wins), sweep Mizzou(7 wins), and take care of a struggling Tennessee team(8 wins) at home.

That leaves...
@ Ole Miss
Kentucky
@ State
@ Bama
Auburn
@ Tennessee
State
@ Florida
@ UGA

To pick up one more win and finish .500 in league play. Realistically, I see more than one win above and think 10-8 in league play seems attainable. If so, Arkansas would finish 22-9 and would’ve overachieved in year one under Muss.

Your thoughts?

Historically not matter how good the team, no matter the coach, Arkansas teams have struggled at Ms. State, at aggy, at Vandy, at SC, they teams normally see a drop off in field goal %, all of these venues also share in being dimly lit shite holes. @ Florida is the exception, but the refs have screwed us consistently down there, similar to last night at IU with the no calls. The refs called the game more like a tourney game where all the sudden you're allowed to beat, bang, and hack in the lane with no calls.

The only real challenge at home on the schedule is Kentucky, just be cause of the match up problems and the dribble drive offense focusing on paint points and pain shots/put backs. For this game we need to see Baley/Chaney with Henderson giving breathers just for size, but it is at home and you can beat them trading 2s for 3s.

For the team to make the tourney they need to win the home games, beat Aggy on the road. Seeding can be improved by picking up wins @bama/OM/UGA/Florida/Tenner/Mizzou/LSU.

For every home loss one of those 7 road games will need to be wins. I don't see the team winning only 1 road game, but the only landmines on the schedule as far as NET ratings would be concerned would be Aggy and Vandy.

Hogs are currently #26 in the NET Ratings, moved up from #36 in the first release after the win at Indiana.

Bracket Matrix has us at #10, fourth best in the SEC behind Kentucky, Auburn, and Tenner.

Basically as long as the team finishes at or above .500 in league play they will play in the post season. They likely need 9 wins to be a lower seed in the NCAA but 10 wins could land them a 5 seed.

I don't really see this as the same as Pel's first 2-14 SEC finish, the team seems to be playing well together on the court, and I doubt assistant coaches will be fighting players during practice and in the locker room pregame.

What all happened under Pelphrey and even Heath. I've caught posts and heard guys on the radio hint about some of the shenanigans going on before Mike cleaned it up.

Ostrom (who is still with Archie at IU) squared up with Steph Welsh in the locker room before a game.

MacDonald was kicked off the team for fighting Pel during practice.

Monk was removed from the team for accepting illegal benefits.

2-14 was the result.

Heath had players skipping class during the season or flat out flunking. It was largely overblown as several players have to pass summer school classes to remain eligible in Football/Basketball, most take 8-12 hours during the season and make up hours post season, nothing new there. Of course they didn't graduate with hurt the APR, but Pel took a less than desirable situation and dropped a big boy on it by flipping the roster ever year he was here.

The only parallel to then and now is the top 5 recruiting class Pel left was also a large class filled with players not recruited by the blue bloods. The difference is Muss recruited all of these guys, where as the only player from that class that made it through under Anderson happened to be the only player he was recruiting while at Mizzou. I predicted 22 wins before the season started and they may be even better than I thought. We may get to 23 or 24.

I think .500 in conference play is realistic.

This was my prediction to start the year.
quote:

Rice- W
North Texas- W
Montana- W
Texas Southern- W
South Dakota- W
@ Georgia Tech -L (W Result)
Northern Ky -W
Austin Peay -W
@ Western Kentucky- W (pay back time) unfortunately an L.
Tulsa -W
Valparaiso -W
@ Indiana -L (W result)

I predicted us to go 10-2 OOC but we did a bit better going 11-1. As for the rest of the season
quote:

Texas A&M -W
@ LSU -L
@ Ole Miss -L Changing this to a W.
Vanderbilt -W
Kentucky-L
@ Mississippi State -W
TCU -W
South Carolina -W
@ Alabama -W
Auburn-L
@ Missouri -L I'm changing this to a win as well.
@ Tennessee -L
Mississippi State -W
@ Florida -L
Missouri -W
Tennessee -W
@ Georgia -W
LSU Tigers-L Changing this to a win as well.
@ Texas A&M-W

21-10 (10-8).

With my pre-seaaon prediction we are one game ahead of schedule and should finish 22-9. The SEC is not as strong as I thought it would be pre-season and I just drank a 5 gallon container of kopl aid and I'm now predicting we finish the season 25-6 and are a top 20 team entering the tournament.

South Carolina is going to be a tough out. They also went on the road and beat Virginia. Led all but 98 seconds of that game. I can't wait to get to see that one.

Top 32. Miss the sweet 16 by the opposing teams buzzer beater. We likely finish 3 or fourth in conference play. Seed 5-7.

Just a guess.

I'm throwing every season out the window til back to the Sutton years.

We haven't had a coach like this since he was here.

I have no idea how this season will play out,but we aren't married to a system and this guy can adjust during the game without timeouts.

I can see him having Gonzaga type of success soon and when he gets our state's players to stay home it's Katie bar the door.

I see people talk about him having some success here then leaving, but I see this guy understanding that we are a powerhouse waiting to be re energized.

Muss is the real deal and we need to make sure he stays here.Screw the so called blue bloods,we are as good as any with our in state talent.

Go Hogs!

Well, he's already spoken about this and I believe him when he says this job is as good as it gets. He isn't looking to go somewhere else. He has access to all of the things here that any other blue blood program in the nation does. He can build this team into a perennial title contender.

The rest of that decision will come down to whether he enjoys being here or not and I believe he does.

I think we are gonna be able to keep him here for a long time.

Everyone always says this about Arkansas, but the facts are that we don't typically have coaches leave our programs for other places. Our coaches either coach here for a long time or get fired. They don't "move on."
