people you knew and/or loved who died, you want to re-read their obits, remember their lives and remember your friends tied to their lives, et cetera...and the ADG wants you to pay to do it.
I'm free market at all, but
the most pathetic thing I've ever seen in my life maybe, we walked into the Tilted Kilt in Fayetteville to grab a burger and beers for late breakfast on a late Saturday morning I guess, and Wally Hall and Holt and Recruiting Guy were sitting there at a table, speechless, creepy as hell, eyeing everyone who walked in and wonderding I guess if we were going to come up and declare our undying devotion to the fricktard scribblings from the ADG
We didn't. Instead, we sat at the bar and made friends with the baseball radio crew of the Bama Tide, they bought us beers, we bought them beers, they bought us beers, we bought them beers, etc etc etc, and Wally's little butt sat and wondered why he wasn't getting the Shorty Smalls treatment off West Markham
I'll have the downvotes now

Being so restrictive on content is one reason newspapers as a whole are dying.
A lot of them are so protective of their paid content when you can find the same news on Twitter minutes later, makes no sense. It's not like most of what they put out is proprietary.

You won't have to pay to read the ADG's obituary in USA Today in a few years

That would mean Gatehouse Media will buy the ADG, which will never ever happen as long as Mr Bohemian Grove himself, Walter Hussman Jr. is still living.
I can tell you from extremely reliable sources, the obituary thing among All Wehco properties is a something that has been going on internally for basically a year now as a target to stop the titanic from sinking.
This is also the same company and leadership who thought it was a stupendously grear idea to give iPads to 80 yr olds and thinks that an app that nobody ever uses or wants is a better longterm strategy than a traditional news website.
Obits are basically the only reason many people even still buy a physicsl newspaper. If they piss off enough people, they won't have a subscriber base left... So it looks like they're on track with that.

This..Never understoood this business model.
Then, the users never returned the ipads. Take it to court ect ect....Just seemed like wasted money.

It was and everybody knew it at the time except the executives at ADG/Wehco.
The idea wasn't even original, either. They just copied what some other paper had done and thought it would work.
To break even on the deal, they were going to have to convert 80% of their subscriber base over to the iPads/app. I'd bet the actual number in the end was closer to 10%. Nobody wanted them.
Old people had no idea how to work them and no one under 50 gave a shite about the newspaper anyway. So, instead of retaining subscribers, they actually ran more off because of a scheme that apparently everyone but the suits knew would fail.
This is also the same paper that didn't update to a mobile optimized website until about 2018. It's kind of amazing, actually.

I don't care to see statewide obits as a rule. If you must see them, you can catch all of them in the Sunday edition. Yeah, still have to pay $3.00 for the paper...
I just generally check a couple of local funeral homes for obits. You can read them free.
