Man I hope we get quality innings from Hagen and/or Tygart tomorrow. Tygart especially has been dicey lately. Kinda wish he could’ve found his way to work a stress free inning tonight or against Stanford just to get his feet back underneath him.

So who do you guys think starts tomorrow?

I think DVH takes a page out of the Tampa book and starts the (former) closer Tygart and hopes to ride him 4-5 innings. At that point we'll hopefully have a nice cushion. Not saying it's the right move but that's what I'm expecting to see.

Looks like Ole Miss is starting a lefty. When was the last time that we hit one hard and early?

We had 3 runs in the 2nd inning on the best lefty in the country 2 games ago lol.

Handled Okie States big one pretty well too.

Just keep the approach that has gotten us here and don’t leave stuff hanging up in the zone while up in the count count with 2 strikes. Pretty sure Elko and DJ Tiestos double/HR both came with 2 strikes.

Serious individual pitching mistakes were made first game by Taylor, Ramage and Wiggins. Avoid those and it’s a different ballgame.

Also get something, anything out of Slavens and Gregory at the plate. Incredible neither of them could put the bat on ball vs Auburns pee wee squad. Honestly not even sure how you don’t give someone else a shot at DH. At least Gregory has been solid in left.

That’s essentially what he’d be doing with starting Smith.

DVH said after the OK State series that the original plan with Hagen was that he was supposed to be a short reliever and/or closer until Pallette went down and they needed another arm in the rotation.

I like Tygart, but I’m not sure I have the confidence in him opening a game like this. He walks too many batters and runs his pitch count up too quickly, though whether that’s just a byproduct of him being a freshman or something with control that needs to be corrected, I don’t know. Probably a little of both.

Noland or Smith.

Likely Noland.

Anyone but Smith starting is getting cute again. Just roll with him, he’s been awesome and should be confident. If it doesn’t work, you tip your hat to Ole Miss and try Tygert/committee. Didn’t he beat Ole Miss already?

The chances of Tygert going long seem slimmer than Smith to me.

Said this on another board, but we’re to the point where Slavens needs to sit.

I know it’s baseball heresy to make substantial changes to your lineup in a pinch, but he’s just not seeing the ball well at all right now. Could we really get any less from our DH by rolling with Diggs or Bohrofen at this point? With Gregory you’re at least getting a solid glove and the occasional walk, HBP, or even battling at the plate and sometimes driving up pitch counts. Slavens is just hacking up there, and he seems to get to 0-2 every time he comes up.

Hell, move Turner to DH and have Leach catch. At least that’d get Turner defensive rest and get another switch hitter into the lineup.

Again, I’m not sure we can do any worse at DH than 2-13 with 6 K’s.

On 4 days rest?

Why burn him first and not let Smith have a shot and see what happens?

If Noland doesn’t work, you’re totally f-ed tomorrow.

Pulling Turner off the dish would be a terrible idea.

I guess Slavens got the game winner against pokes. Let him hit out of it. Deserves that chance I suppose.

I just don’t think bringing Noland back on short rest is the right move. I think you hope like hell you make it through this game somehow with Hagen/Tygart/whoever else can throw strikes but not meatballs and then throw Noland tomorrow.

UNC.

Eh, I’m not sure he’s earned the chance to stay at DH as much as it is there’s presumably nobody behind him they feel comfortable with. But I’d counter that with the fact that McEntire might be our best pitcher at the moment and he quite literally had to beg DVH for a chance.

I just can’t see the rationale with sticking with a Mendoza Line hitter at DH who strikes out in half his trips to the plate. A buddy of mine texted me last night that Slavens is the “college version of Joey Gallo.” As both a Hog fan and Yankee fan, that hit hard.

Slavens really had a lot of great looking ABs in Stillwater and Chapel Hill if I recall correctly. Just seeing the ball really well. In the Regionals and Super Regionals, Slavens was 8/27 with 5 walks, 6 K’s, and 8 RBI.

Heck even in game 1 against Stanford, he was 2-4 with 2 RBI. Though it certainly has been disappointing to see him go 0-9 with 5 K’s and 0 walks in these last 2 games. But I don’t think I’d pull him. Moving him down to the 8 spot seems like a good idea though.

The more I think about it the more I think it’s Noland. I think it’s the right decision. If you want to win the championship you need two more starts out of Noland. I don’t see how you can get two more starts out of Noland unless he pitches tonight.

For sure start smith. If things are going great like yesterday you continue to save Tygart. Otherwise you bring him in the first high leverage situation whether it’s the 2nd inning or 9th.

The leash will be extra short with the upperclassman today. Nobody will be allowed to walk 3 in a row like Morris did Monday.

Live or die with noland tomorrow just like it should be.

Gotta be Smith/Tygart combo to start tonight....right? nothing else makes sense. Try to hold Noland for the next night if you can get there but don't burn him down on short rest.
Heck I'd even be ok with Morris getting another shot in relief (with a VERY quick hook). Behind him I guess it's all hands on deck.

True. He only threw 20ish pitches Monday night.

Wouldn't tomorrow still be short rest anyway? And if you want to pitch him in the championship series you'd be bringing him back on short rest again regardless. Unless we think we can win a title without our best pitcher lol.

I'm fine with whatever DVH decides to do though I can see the rationale for both.

We haven't played Oregon State. As for the Ole Miss guys, he only have up three runs, in 6 1/3 innings.

While we did score 5 runs, he went 7 on us.

Now, when was the last time that we hit a LH starter hard?
