The portal has turned us all into paranoids. Pre-portal it was rare for a good player to transfer bc they wouldn’t want to waste a year sitting out, now it doesn’t matter. Add in NIL as a potential carrot to lure those transfers away and it’s turned college football into a complete circus.

At least after last season we had a 9-4 record to point at and tell portal guys "see, we just need your help to get over the last little hump". We had something to actually sell to those guys in the portal, and we landed some studs

This year we have a bunch of openings to point to and say look at what we did with Drew Sanders, Nudie and Matt Landers.

Agreed. Way more damaging to the sport than NIL.

It would have helped a lot if Sam didn't focus so much on the finesse of the pass rush and got himself another John Ridgeway who plugged up gaps and took on double teams.

The portal (coupled with NIL) is going to have far reaching ramifications. It’s literally changing the way coaches have to coach and interact with players, and it preys on the instincts and faults of college kids.

Not getting as much PT as you wanted or thought you should get even though you didn’t put in the effort or work? Portal. Mad because coach isn’t kissing your arse now like he did in recruiting? Portal to greener pastures and you can get that recruiting experience all over again.

You’re going to see fewer of the old school disciplinarians because kids can just up and leave if they don’t like the way a coach talks to them. And it’s going to be a very hard balance to strike for coaches — can’t be tough on kids because they can just up and leave, but you can’t be soft or you’ll lose your locker room.

There was a media guy who had a great tweet recently, something to the effect of “I have 3 college aged kids and they have zapped me of my will to live, I couldn’t imagine having to deal with 100 of them.”

Really going to make our bowl game dreadful. Not just ours, but most all bowl games. 40-50 scholarship players available really limits what a team can do.

It’s not we were killing it in the old system. Would you rather Alabama hoard a bunch of 5 stars like sanders?

I think it’s actually easier to sell our program an older player than a 17 year old.

Look at Muss. Ever year he brings in 5-10 portal guys. Some of them are great some of them bust. Rinse repeat.

This is the only reason I’ve seen to really expand the playoffs past 12.

I know every year there is a break down of how many enter the portal never play again… and that’s alarming.

I would like to see us put in restrictions of not being able to cut someone who doesn’t violate team rules, or something egregious, before 2 years. And they can’t transfer out without having their AA. That’s like 60 hours and should be pretty simple to obtain in 2 years. Especially with them being on campus for Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall… that’s like 10 credit hours per…

Imagine the NFL with this system. Every year, every player becomes a free agent, and there is no salary cap.

It really has diminished the sport.

Bowl games outside the CFP have lost all meaning. Players care more about branding and marketing themselves. Relationships between players and coaches, players and fans, and coaches and schools are purely transactional. Players can simply quit and go elsewhere at the first sign of adversity.

As long as college football continues to slide into this reality where it’s become more of just a feeder system to the NFL, the more players are going to move the goalposts more and more. You’re going to see more junior season opt-outs a la Nick Bosa at OSU a few years ago.

If this is what college football is becoming, I don’t really want much to do with it. Perhaps I’m just being nihilistic, but this sport is a shell of what it used to be.

JFC….the portal and NIL have completely turned fans into tin foil hat wearing lunatics. Not just ours, almost every board or on social media there’s talk of mass exoduses, fractured locker rooms, poaching, etc. I cannot believe how dumb college football has now made its collective fans with these new rules.

NFL scouts don't give a shite what success a college team had - if a player can play the game, that's all that matters

how tall is he, can he run, will he hit you? That's the synopsis

there's drama queens in every locker room across America, and there's one or two cancers on the coaching staff same fricking demographic

what has the portal changed from the past 30 years?

nothing

"a bad seed might leave!"? They always left

30 years ago, bad seeds got TF out. They left

nothing new under the sun

before, it was always called "quitting football"

now it's called "entering the portal"

huge percentage of D1's entering the portal have just quit, same as in the past, and they're too lazy to go play at UA Monticello or some place

nothing new under the sun

portal has changed absolutely nothing

NIL, different story
