That's another thing too. I just want a guy who will be out there. Who isn't fat, who cares and leads by example.

You're fine man. I enjoy you on here as well and like I said, this isn't a melt from 5 minutes ago. Its honestly how I've felt since his name came up.

I get it. I wasn't excited either but I can also understand that there is a bigger picture. Bringing Steve Caldwell in looks good if true.

I have faith and just more dissapointed with fans on here that I respect that can't understand my issue.
Hope you had a Merry Christmas bro

quote:I can promise blitzing, I can also guarantee that the term "prevent defense" will not exist. As far as pay, we'll set the contract so that the pay is according to the team's overall rankings statistically on the defensive side of the ball. That said if we finish tops in the league, the boys might have to call Jerry again.
If you would do that and blitz then you might just be our guy. How much money you looking for? We have to pony up a ton of cash to lose a 400lb coach so it might be a little tight for a while

I don't like Chavis but I agree about Caldwell.

It is what it is. With a coach brand new to the SEC we needed someone who has been around the block a few hundred times. Was he my choice?
Well no.
But lets hope that Chavis builds something vaguely resembling a defense before he shuffles off into retirement.

Chavis wouldn't be my first choice either. I'll never forget that year when Mallett torched his defense for an 80 year TD right before halftime. If this is who Morris hires then all I can do is hope for the best.
I do think we won't see our DBs play 10 yards off the WR anymore. If Caldwell comes back then I think our DL will be vastly improved and we will see our DEs get sacks again.

The play where the two defenders collided going for it? That was a beauty for sure.
I’m trying not to be bummed but I’m not overly excited either. I wonder what look Morris had on his face watching the Aggie d today.

Yep, that play. Coincidentally, I remember LSU fans bitching because they were still playing man coverage instead of a prevent. My, how times change.

To be fair 99% of college QB's that try to fit that throw on that D right then get picked. Mallett just threw a fricking dot. That was more Mallett being amazing than their D being bad.

Not to mention that it was pure luck that the two LSU guys collided. Absolutely amazing play but it wasn’t a product of bad defense.

I'm on the fence IF (let's not forget that it's not 100% done yet) it turns out to be Chavis. His résumé is better than any DC we've had in many years and he's had some successful seasons, including an NC win and another appearance. Our defense can't be much worse than it has the last few years excluding the Robb Smith single season anomaly, so we should at least improve at minimum. Our defense will also have improved fundamentals under him and stop most of the glaring mistakes.
He's also exclusively been in the SEC since before most of his players were born, 3 years longer than the players in this recruiting class have been alive. With his name and experience he can definitely bring in some decent assistants that can make up for his lack of hardcore recruiting, see Caldwell for example.
I don't like that most of his success has come with high-end defense recruits that we'll never see here, and still even had some head-scratcher games/seasons with those elite recruits. Then he goes to A&M and takes a major step down talent-wise and the results aren't too great, but the defensive talent he had to work with there is still quite a bit better than our average.
Is his heart even in it anymore? Does he care if Arkansas succeeds or does he care if HE succeeds? Does he even care about either at this point, or is he padding his bank account for that extra comfy retirement?
I agree with the earlier post that said the average fan will be indifferent or even somewhat approve the hire because they know the name and may remember his better LSU defenses. It's the hardcore, football savvy fans that will be the only ones to disapprove and/or be hesitant to get on board with it.

Yeah, that was sort of my point and I sidetracked myself. He was still playing agressive defense on the last play before half. Now I hear LSU and Aggy fans talk about 3rd and Chavis and playing a prevent, but I still recall LSU playing agressive defense.
Posted on 12/29/17 at 8:51 pm to Maytheporkbewithyou
Yeah people love to talk about 9-6 but forget Chavis was the DC for that defense. People can hate but Chavis is capable of putting together a filthy defense. People need to just chill and see what he's able to do here.
Posted on 12/30/17 at 12:10 am to Hawgnsincebirth55
Question is, does Morris beleive Chavis will build defenses like he "admired" when coaching against/watching LSU? Or more like the Aggie version that should be able to be had for a mill less per?

I really like Norvell but he’s far from safe. Memphis was already rolling when he got there.

Yeah Cobi 100% gets tackled by Morris Claiborne if Karnell Hatcher didn't plow into him. He also needed a fantastic downfield block by Joe or Jarius to get in at the end.

I meant more from a fan's perspective. He was a lot of people's favorite for a long stretch during the search, and wasn't divisive like Gus.
