Would you all support Coach A if he finally decides to improve his coaching assistants. More importantly bring a guy in that can help our half court offense production.
That's always been his Achilles heel.
I've always believed in his philosophical approach to college basketball. The fact that he wants kids to grow up quick, and play aggressive/unafraid. It's the reason he's one of four coaches that has never had a losing season(impressive no matter how you want to slice it)
With his philosophical approach and a better grasp(for the players) of half court sets; we could be doing a lot more.
Nolan's teams had that ability to play that way. Mike's have struggled, and I think that's the biggest issue.

Defense and rebounding are garbage though and he is always playing roster catchup without filling holes of outgoing or subpar talent.
Did he only now learn Thompson was a senior? No replacement for TT and the way this works when Daniel makes his decision in May after the combine no quality big men will be remaining as potential targets. It’s maddening every year that a roster situation occurs.

I agree with he needs to recruit better all around. Tired of wasting the few talented players we get, by not rounding out a roster.
Also we need a true PG(which supposedly we have in Harris)

IMO recruiting is the biggest issue. Our system can work, as is, with the right players.

Don't get your hopes up too high with Harris. He couldn't do shite at New Mexico. He won't do shite against SEC level guards. Anderson's history of transfers just flat out sucks as well.

He moved Zimmerman out and Scotty up. I don't see how that paid dividends this past season.
Mike doesn't value rebounding or a legit half court offense.
Mike has hit his ceiling here, that sucks.
I was all for the hire.

He wasted two All-SEC senior guards and a NBA 1st round draft pick bigman. Three of the 5 best players we’ve had in a decade and it’ll probably be another 10 years before we have a team consisting of that combo again.
He’ll keep up the cliches like “my teams are built for this time of year” or “the reason we play 10-11 guys is to get them ready for March” without any accomplishments or results because the quality drop off is so sharp. Bench full of mid-major role players expected to be starters after a couple years in a league that is only getting better talent and coaches.

I posted this elsewhere over the weekend but it fits here too.
quote:
PG in this system is about not becoming stagnant (the motionless motion offense) and passing to get people involved. Having guards that can defend the dribble, stay in front of average to above average guards by moving their feet instead of hands would be a start. Stop the incessant predetermined switching / trapping that creates a disadvantage resulting in leaving shooters that we are slow to rotate.
The biggest issue for Mike is PF or bigmen in general. It’s the most vital position in Mike’s system yet outside of Portis, Coty Clarke is the only athletic but skilled one that played of any quality and once again he was a JUCO. We’ve had holes all throughout the roster not addressed and a bench full of mid level role players taking up scholarships. He can play 9, 10 or 11 guys whatever but when the quality play drops off so far that’s not the depth he loves to boast. He loves talking up the depth and fast pace but doesn’t trust it enough to really press defensively so we get this half hearted hope the shooters get tired and miss nonsense.

Pretty spot on above.
And not a good thing for a coach with his age and experience to just now be addressing.
Then again, Izzo just got knocked out before the 2nd weekend for the 3rd straight year so go figure.
He just needs to recruit better. That really is the bottom line. Look what it is doing for Auburn, A&M, Alabama and soon to be LSU, assuming Wade isn't a total squid.
He's gotta land better high end talent and quit being so dependent on solely Arkansas talent.
Macon and Barford were great but they're both a bit undersized. One was quick enough but not strong enough and the other was the exact opposite, strong but lacked elite quickness.
We need a couple guys that are 6-5 to 6-8 with the ability to score 15/game and truly create opportunities on defense. Hall was the only guy close to that and he was hardly usable until February. Cook, Gabe, Bailey and Thomas could hardly even put the damn ball on the floor.
Qualls has been the only guy in 7 years he's landed that can do that at that size (here's to hoping Hall or Garland can be that guy). Miles, Thomas, Cook, Bailey, Babb, Whitt, Jacory. The list goes on and on with guys he's flat out missed on/left the program.

The problem is he has missed on three big players since he has been here from the state. I believe it is unrealistic to assume that you can grab every elite talent but he could definitely be doing a better job at locking down the state.

Mike's system is what it is. We will never consistently be a contender to go deep in the tourney.
When we can make a team play our pace his teams can be really fun to watch. My biggest issues with Mike are what had been posted here a million times. His philosophy of "We don't worry about what the other team does we need to worry about what we do" pisses me off. We help off of 40% 3 point shooters to trap indiscriminately on the elbow. That drives me bonkers.

For sure.
Kevaughn would have been huge on this team and he would have played a ton, even with Barford and Macon.
Don't get how he continues failing to sell things to our instate guys.
Gafford is most likely going to prove Monk had absolutely no reason to go to UK and was probably marginalized there to an extent.

What percentage of in-state guys do you think an Arkansas coach should be able to pull?

I'm skeptical it would work, but I'd support him. That's one of the huge problems, so addressing it would be big. The other is a lack of focus on defense. I would add rebounding, but Nolan's teams didn't rebound well, either.
I also think if Mike is fired, then it needs to be done carefully or we'd better have a great replacement ready. Mike's been loyal to Arkansas and is seen as an extension to Nolan, so we don't want to dredge up any farces from the past. If that can't be done, then we're better off keeping him.
Recruiting does need to improve a little, but I don't consider that a major problem, because it's really not that far off, imo. You could argue that Nolan recruited great, but I'd argue that his results were greater than his class ranks.

100% Utah.

No, prime players... nobody cares about the Trey Thompson's of the world until they sign elsewhere.

So just looking at top 100 players, Mike has signed 4/7 from the state (I believe Beard was top 100, I included him). That is including his current class with Ethan Henderson being currently at #99. He missed on the two highest rated players in that list( I can give him some leeway on one since he had only been on the job for around 6 months).
I don't think it is unrealistic to get at least 5 of those 7.

Mike mentioned Trey and Anton after the game said they may not be high major players or impact players that everyone thinks about but they fitted in and played a role and did it well.
Youtube 6:50
I think all his roll players and not enough well round basketball players on the roster are his biggest issues. Sure we’ve developed some elite guys quickly that move on but fundamentally the longer they stay in the program the role players aren’t necessarily getting better.

Our highest ranks:
Portis was top 25
Kingsley top 50
Whitt was top 70
Gafford around 40
Henderson borderline 100
Qualls was a rare 150+ that developed
The rest especially HS guy have been 115-250+.
