I’ve seen some people think this guy could be a top 5 RB in his class. Still a long way to go though. Apparently Pittman has told him if he committed he’d be the only 2024 RB we take.

First 2024 in-state offer goes to Malvern OL Vinny Winters.

Second 2024 in-state offer goes to Lakeside RB Braylen Russell. Transferred to Benton after denied LR Christian.

Third 2024 in-state offer goes to Valley View LB Brian Huff.

Fourth 2024 in-state offer goes to Pine Bluff DL Charleston Collins. Transferred to LR Mills.

Fifth 2024 in-state offer goes to Little Rock Christian QB Walker White.

Briles and Loggains watched him workout before the offer came from Pittman.

Sixth 2024 in-state offer goes to Bryant EDGE/DL TJ Lindsey.

Both of these 2024 new 5*'s were on campus (March 5th).

DE COLIN SIMMONS

quote:

"To think Simmons has two more years of high school football is incredible because he's already a completely dominant force as an edge rusher. The Duncanville, Texas, prospect is so fast and powerful as a defensive end that many times the quarterback cannot fully get into his drop until insane pressure is coming his way and Simmons is headhunting.

"Already a physically-dominant force, Simmons' future is at defensive end but he can also play in space, drop when needed and his speed is exceptional for a sophomore in high school.

"Arkansas appeals to him because teammate and friend Jordan Crook signed there and is talking up the Razorbacks. Baylor is very much liked along with Oklahoma State and then Texas and Texas A&M will undoubtedly be battling for his commitment as well." - Adam Gorney, National Recruiting Director

quote:

WR RYAN WINGO

quote:

"There was little doubt about whether Wingo would end up a five-star; the real question was when he would be officially minted one of the top players in his class. Wingo didn't have to wait long.

"He has a phenomenal combination of size and skill to go along with legit speed backed up by his track times. The WR prospect out of SLUH, Mo., is a Swiss Army Knife on the field as he is capable of dominating a game in so many different ways.

"Wingo will likely have his choice of any school in the country when it comes time for him to sign and I expect his number of offers to expand exponentially in the coming months. While there is plenty of time left in Wingo's recruiting process, Texas A&M, Texas, Missouri, Oregon, Arkansas and Michigan State appear to be the early leaders for his pledge." - Clint Cosgrove, National Recruiting Analyst

1. DE Colin Simmons

quote:

Gorney's Take: The No. 1 player in the 2024 class is so dominant off the edge for his Duncanville team that quarterbacks can hardly get into their drops and Simmons is there to cause problems. He is phenomenal using speed off the edge to beat offensive tackles but he can also bull-rush through them or use violent hands to get inside.

Simmons lives in the backfield either sacking the quarterback, creating incredible pressure or rushing the offense into something it doesn’t want to do.

Arkansas, Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma State and others are involved early.

quote:

3. WR Ryan Wingo

quote:

Gorney's Take: Ryan Wingo has all the tools of a special wide receiver as he lines up in the slot, lines up outside, even lines up in the backfield sometimes as his team looks for every way possible to get the ball in his hands.

The St. Louis (Mo.) University standout has a big catch radius, great hands and better-than-average speed to separate himself from defensive backs, plus great balance down the sideline.

His brother, Ronnie, played at Arkansas and then Texas A&M is definitely up there with Missouri, Notre Dame, Oregon and others involved early on.

For evidence of Arkansas’ recent success on the field bleeding into the recruiting trail, look no further than the initial Rivals250 for the Class of 2024 that was released Tuesday.

The Razorbacks already have one top-200 recruit committed in Hot Springs Lakeside running back Braylen Russell, who debuted at No. 187, and have had numerous others on campus over the last 12 months.

That includes hosting two of the top three overall prospects — Duncanville, Texas, defensive end Colin Simmons (No. 1) and St. Louis, Mo., University wide receiver Ryan Wingo (No. 3) — over the weekend for the latest Prospect Day.

Both recruits were seriously considered for the top spot in the rankings and are genuinely interested in Arkansas at this early stage of their recruitment.

For Simmons, as well as safety Ka’Davion Dotson (No. 86), the pull is an opportunity to reunite with high school teammate Jordan Crook, a linebacker signee in the 2022 class who has enrolled early and will go through spring practice.

Wingo is actually an Arkansas legacy, as his older brother, Ronnie Jr., played for the Razorbacks from 2009-12. It’s also worth noting that his other brother, Raymond, played at Missouri under current Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom.

The Razorbacks have signed only three five-star recruits straight out of high school during the Rivals era (Darren McFadden, Mitch Mustain and Darius Winston) and added two others as transfers (Ryan Mallett, Jadon Haselwood).

The last time Arkansas was a serious contender for the top overall prospect on Rivals was in 2012, when Dorial Green-Beckham broke the Razorbacks’ hearts by picking Missouri on National Signing Day.

Those two are far from the only high-profile recruits head coach Sam Pittman has convinced to make the trip to Fayetteville, though. In fact, they aren’t the only top-10 prospects, as quarterback DJ Lagway (No. 7) attended Arkansas’ win over Mississippi State last season.

There are also two in-state prospects in the Rivals250. In addition to Russell, who’s already committed, Little Rock Christian quarterback Walker White checked in at No. 147.

He has yet to receive an offer from the Razorbacks, but he has been to Fayetteville multiple times and told HawgBeat that the coaches told him they’ll continue to monitor him throughout the process. White comes from a family of Razorbacks, as both of his older brothers (John David - football; Zac - baseball), father (David - golf), uncle (John Aaron Rees - football), grandfather (John Rees - football) and great-grandfather (Harold “Greasy” Rees - football) played at the UA.

Here’s a rundown of prospects in the 2024 Rivals250 that HawgBeat knows of that visited Arkansas or have been visited by Arkansas coaches…

quote:

No. 1 - Colin Simmons - DE - Duncanville (Texas)

No. 3 - Ryan Wingo - WR - St. Louis (Mo.) University

No. 7 - DJ Lagway - QB - Willis (Texas)

No. 18 - Kavion Henderson - DE - Leeds (Ala.)

No. 44 - Adrian Posse - QB - Miami (Fla.) Columbus

No. 56 - Payton Pierce - LB - Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy

No. 63 - Maurice Williams - S - Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek

No. 70 - Tylen Singleton - ATH - Many (La.)

No. 86 - Ka’Davion Dotson - S - Duncanville (Texas)

No. 134 - Xadavien Sims - DE - Denison (Texas)

No. 138 - KingJoseph Edwards - ATH - Buford (Ga.)

No. 147 - Walker White - QB - Little Rock (Ark.) Christian

No. 187 - Braylen Russell - RB - Hot Springs (Ark.) Lakeside - COMMITTED

DJ LAGWAY, 2024 QB

quote:

"Gamer" is a word that came up when discussing DJ Lagway, a stoutly built emerging quarterback prospect from Willis (Texas) High School. Already in the 6-foot-2, 215-pound range, Lagway has three-sport experience (baseball, basketball) and averaged 4.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks on varsity as a freshman in the 2020-21 hoops campaign. As a sophomore this past fall, Lagway led Willis to a Class 6A Division II second-round playoff appearance as he threw for 1,579 yards, 17 touchdowns, and two interceptions on a 55.5 completion rate, in addition to 715 rushing yards and six scores on 5.6 yards per carry.

Lagway's size and athleticism result in serious velocity and vertical arm strength, plus big-play ability as a runner. Lagway, another Top247 candidate in the 2024 cycle, flashes off-platform, improvisational ability that serves him well. The son of a former Baylor running back, Lagway has already garnered a lengthy list of offers.

Arkansas Targets in Top247 for 2024

quote:

247Sports has released its initial Top247 rankings for the Class of 2024, and the list includes several prospects who are already closely linked to the Arkansas Razorbacks. Here's a closer look at the names to know, including instate targets, players who have already visited the Hogs, and the Razorbacks' only verbal pledge for the 2024 cycle
:

quote:

12 - KingJoseph Edwards | DL | Buford (Ga.) - Made a trip to Fayetteville last fall and said earlier this week that he'll be back on the Hill in June.

19 - Ryan Wingo | WR | St. Louis (Mo.) University - Younger brother of former Razorback Ronnie Wingo Jr. has visited Arkansas multiple times and will be expected to make more trips to Fayetteville throughout the rest of his recruitment. The Hogs are considered a strong contender early on.

35 - Tylen Singleton | S | Many (La.) - Singleton was blown away by his first trip to Arkansas last month and said he will definitely be back for a second look. He is teammates with 2023 four-star linebacker and major Arkansas target Tackett Curtis.

46 - DJ Lagway | QB | Willis (Texas) - It's still very early and Lagway will visit a ton of schools, but the Razorbacks are already seen as a major player in his recruitment following his second trip to Fayetteville.

52 - Colin Simmons | DE | Duncanville (Texas) - Simmons was one of several big-time 2024 targets who made their way to the UA for a prospect day visit in March, and he has plans of returning later in the year.

59 - Xadavien Sims | DL | Sherman (Texas) - Sims was on Arkansas' campus for a camp visit last June, but it seems things have gone quiet between the two parties lately.

60 - Maurice Williams | S | Pearland (Texas) Shadow Creek - Williams also visited the Hogs last summer and had multiple reschedules this offseason, but says he still plans to be back for another visit soon.

161 - Walker White | QB | Little Rock (Ark.) Christian - White is an in-state target and younger brother of former Razorback wide receiver John David White. He has yet to be offered by the Hogs but is being closely monitored by the staff. Walker has made multiple trips to the Hill.

169 - Payton Pierce | LB | Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy - There's plenty of competition, but Arkansas has to love its position thus far with Pierce. He plans to be back on campus on April 23 for another visit with Sam Pittman's staff. Pierce works out with former Razorback running back Jonathan Williams.

223 - Kavion Henderson | DL | Leeds (Ala.) - Arkansas has already received a Crystal Ball prediction for Henderson, who is coming off his second trip to Fayetteville last month and will be back for a third visit soon. Henderson is close friends with 2023 Razorback pledge Dallas Young.

245 - Ka'Davion Dotson | CB | Duncanville (Texas) - Dotson has already received a Crystal Ball pick to the Hogs after making two trips to Arkansas on back-to-back weekends in March.

246 - Melvin Laster | LB | Liberty (Mo.) North - Laster has already made multiple trips to the UA and said recently that he's working to get back to Fayetteville again soon.

247 - Braylen Russell | RB | Hot Springs (Ark.) Lakeside - Russell is Arkansas' lone commitment to start the 2024 class. He's also one of the most notable running back prospects to come out of the Natural State in several years.

Arkansas Targets in Updated Top247 for 2024

quote:

Getting the bad news out of the way first, the Razorbacks did see their only 2024 commitment, running back Braylen Russell, fall out of the Top247 after previously holding the final spot in April's list. Other Arkansas targets who fell from the Top247 include safety Ka'Davion Dotson, who has visited multiple times, and quarterback Josh Flowers, who added an offer in May and visited a couple of weeks later.

quote:

12. KingJoseph Edwards | E | Buford (Ga.) - Two-way standout attended Arkansas' win over Mississippi State last November.

14. Ryan Wingo | WR | St. Louis (Mo.) University - Has visited Fayetteville several times, both as a recruit and to watch older brother Ronnie.

16. Kobe Black | CB | Waco (Texas) Connally - Was just on Arkansas' campus for the end of July cookout.

28. Tylen Singleton | ATH | Many (La.) - Made an unofficial trip to the Hill in March; up 7 spots from his April ranking.

44. DJ Lagway | QB | Willis (Texas) - Has made multiple stops in Fayetteville and could be back at some point this fall.

45. Xavier Filsaime | CB | McKinney (Texas) - Flips from WR to CB and rises 37 spots in the rankings; was scheduled to visit in June.

46. Williams Nwaneri | DL | Lee's Summit (Mo.) North - Enjoyed an unofficial visit in Fayetteville earlier this spring; up 144(!) spots.

51. Colin Simmons | E | Duncanville (Texas) - Was in town for a big prospect day in early March.

58. Xadavien Sims | DL | Durant (Okla.) - Took part in one of Arkansas' camps in the summer of 2021.

78. Daniel Calhoun | OL | Roswell (Ga.) Centennial - Already considered one of the Hogs' most wanted in 2024.

121. Demond Williams Jr. | QB | Chandler (Ariz.) Basha - Camped at Arkansas in June and is looking for a game to attend this season.

128. Michael Smith | TE | Savannah (Ga.) Calvary Day - Visited once and is expected back this fall.

137. Dae'vonn Hall | WR | Bellevue (Neb.) - Received an offer from the Razorbacks on June 12.

141. Michael Hawkins | QB | Allen (Texas) - Made a pair of stops in Fayetteville this summer and is definitely one to watch.

151. Christian Bentancur | TE | Woodstock (Ill.) Marian Central Catholic - Another highly-regarded tight end who visited this summer.

158. Walker White | QB | Little Rock (Ark.) Christian - Instate target is one of a few strong candidates to be Hogs' QB in 2024.

170. Payton Pierce | LB | Lucas (Texas) Lovejoy - Has made multiple trips to see the Hogs, who are seen as a very strong contender.

180. Mario Craver | WR | Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville - Only Louisville beat Arkansas in offering Craver last November.

187. Grant Stec | TE | Algonquin (Ill.) Harry D. Jacobs - Received his Arkansas offer the day after Christmas in 2021.

217. Ronnie Royal | ATH | Gulf Shores (Ala.) - Was offered by Dominique Bowman in late June.

222. KJ Jackson | QB | Montgomery (Ala.) St. James School - One of the most impressive QBs at any Arkansas camp this year.

225. JacQawn McRoy | OL | Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville - Offered by the Hogs following a visit in June.

228. Corian Gipson | S | Lancaster (Texas) - Made it to a prospect day in Fayetteville in late January.

231. Aneyas Williams | RB | Hannibal (Mo.) - One of Arkansas' most recent running back offers.

234. Kavion Henderson | DL | Leeds (Ala.) - Has visited the Hogs twice; tons of competition but Arkansas is still a player.

When working out at Arkansas‘ camp, 2024 Mobile (Ala.) Baker four-star quarterback Josh Flowers remembers it “felt like 118” degrees. Yet it didn’t bother the 6-foot-3, 200 pound signal-caller. He wanted to stand out to the coaches in attendance.

Flowers had already received an offer from the Razorbacks, but his trip to Fayetteville helped elevate Arkansas to one of his top schools. He already hopes to return for the Alabama game on Oct. 1.

“I love their facility,” Flowers told On3. “Everything, their facility and their football field. I just want to get back up there and enjoy my time with them.”

The Razorbacks made an immediate impression on Flowers by taking him to their film center. There, they showed him slide shows of the plays he runs in high school, as well as the plays Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson runs. Flowers felt like the gesture showed “how much of a good fit I would be” within the Razorbacks’ system.

quote:

“We basically run the same plays,” Flowers said. “Like everything(‘s) the same. The same reads… just giving the ball to your playmakers. I actually like their offense cause we run the same thing, so I’m pretty used to it.”

Flowers, who has Arkansas as one of his top schools alongside Alabama, is the No. 184 overall prospect and No. 13 quarterback in the 2024 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 10 player in Alabama.

On3 rates him even higher. Per the 2024 On300, Flowers is the No. 54 overall prospect, No. 8 quarterback and No. 4 player in Alabama.

At the camp, Flowers had the opportunity to speak with head coach Sam Pittman. He also bonded with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kendall Briles.

Flowers has talked with Briles over the phone since his visit to Arkansas. Their conversations about the Razorbacks’ scheme are “familiar” for Flowers since he understands how it works. Additionally, the relationship between the two is strong.

“He’s cool,” said Flowers, who also has an offer from Florida. “I like being around him. I can relate to him. Somebody I can talk to, just having a good relationship with (him).”

Benton (Ark.) four-star running back Braylen Russell has decommitted from the Arkansas Razorbacks. The 6-1, 225-pounder went public with his decision via Twitter late Sunday morning.

"After consideration, I'd like to announce that I will be decommitting from the University of Arkansas," Russell wrote. "Everything for me is still 100% open. Let's work!!!"

Russell initially committed to Arkansas on November 6, 2021. In addition to the Razorbacks, his offer list includes Arkansas State, Ole Miss and Tennessee. Russell was in attendance for Arkansas' loss to Alabama on October 1, 2022.

According to 247Sports, Russell is a four-star prospect, the No. 15 running back in the nation and the No. 2 prospect in the state of Arkansas for the Class of 2024. The 247Sports Composite rankings have Russell as a four-star prospect, No. 273 nationally, No. 17 among all running backs, and No. 3 in the Natural State.

With Russell off the board, Arkansas is one of five SEC programs that have zero commitments for the 2024 cycle, joining Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

QB Walker White has got 4 CB & RPM (including Wiltfong and Spiegelman) to Ole Miss over the past month. He's the younger brother of John David White (former walk-on WR) who transferred to UCA and Zac White (former walk-on baseball player).

DL Charleston Collins has got 5 CB & RPM (Wilfong, Shipp, Embody, Spiegelman and Dixon) to LSU over the last two days. He visited LSU this weekend.

Top247 defensive lineman Kavion Henderson commits to Arkansas

quote:

Arkansas received a much-needed morale boost on Sunday afternoon when Top247 defensive lineman Kavion Henderson of Leeds (Ala.) became the Razorbacks' first commitment of the Class of 2024.

Henderson, 6-3, 235, went public with his decision at a ceremony at approximately 3 p.m., choosing the Hogs over Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas A&M and many others. The four-star prospect told HawgSports last week that his finalists were Arkansas, Alabama and Georgia, but he had been committed to the Razorbacks since March.

While defensive line coach Deke Adams is credited for being Henderson's lead recruiter and future position coach, Henderson said his recruitment was a staff effort that began around the first of the year.

Four-star running back Braylen Russell of Benton (Ark.) de-committed from the Razorbacks earlier this fall, which makes Henderson the Hogs' new first commitment for the Class of 2024.

According to 247Sports, Henderson is a four-star prospect, the No. 233 overall player in the nation, No. 16 among all defensive linemen, and the No. 14 overall prospect in the state of Alabama for the Class of 2024. The 247Sports Composite rankings have him listed even higher, as the No. 195 overall target in the country, No. 16 among defensive linemen and No. 12 in his home state.

Henderson's announcement is a timely one for the Razorbacks, who are still reeling after a surprising 21-19 homecoming loss to No. 23 Liberty on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Henderson, Arkansas is also in the mix for several other notable defensive line prospects in the 2024 cycle, including homegrown products in four-star Charleston Collins of Little Rock (Ark.) Mills and three-star TJ Lindsey of Bryant (Ark.).

quote:

Arkansas' current class of 2023 still includes 23 verbal commitments and ranks 16th nationally. The Razorbacks hosted another 2023 prospect over the weekend in West Virginia defensive line commitment Justin Benton of Covington (Ga.) Newton. Benton, 6-2, 275, arrived in Fayetteville Saturday morning and won't finish his visit until Monday morning.

Here's a look at Arkansas' current depth situation at defensive end:

We had other top QB targets we chased and won't get. We also offered him later than some others after Briles and Loggains went to watch him May 5, 2022.

Virginia offered Oct 22, 2021; Ole Miss offered Dec 3, 2021; Syracuse offered Apr 6, 2022; Louisville offered Apr 21, 2022; and Pittsburgh offered Apr 27, 2022.

His latest offers are from LSU, Florida and Alabama.

Georgia, Alabama, LSU already have a 2024 QB committed now.

2024 4-star DL Kavion Henderson commits to Arkansas

quote:

Leeds (Ala.) four-star defensive lineman Kavion Henderson held offers from some of the top programs in college football, including Alabama, Georgia, Michigan and Tennessee. It turns out those schools, and many others, were playing from behind in Henderson’s recruitment for multiple months.

The 6-foot-1.5, 250-pound prospect silently committed to Arkansas in March. On Sunday, he made his pledge to the Razorbacks and head coach Sam Pittman official.

“I wanted to commit [to Arkansas] because I see potential in them,” Henderson told On3. “They’ll be a great team and he’s already a great coach when he was at Georgia. He knows what great players are like and what great coaches are like.”

Henderson has been to Fayetteville three times and will be returning for Arkansas’ game against LSU on Nov. 12. He can already see the development created by Pittman and his staff, from a 9-4 season last year to a top-10 ranking this September.

The four-star is confident that the Razorbacks will be an SEC contender in the future. That’s one of the reasons why he wants to help the Razorbacks’ resurgence.

“I wanted to go somewhere and make an impact,” said Henderson, the No. 135 overall prospect and No. 13 defensive lineman in the 2024 On3 Consensus. “They got a lot of great players there… They came through and I want to make a difference there at the EDGE position. I just want to make an impact and (I) see myself playing here along with some great players.”

quote:

Henderson recognized that there is ‘belief in Arkansas’

quote:

Henderson still remembers the night he called Pittman. He said the third-year Arkansas coach was happy and excited about his decision.

“The coach is unbelievable,” Henderson said. “Coach Pittman, he kept it real. He told me some stuff. He was just funny, and he reminded me of my coach.”

But it was not just Pittman who showed interest in Henderson. Multiple members of the Razorbacks’ staff were in communication with the Alabama native. They spoke with his grandmother as well, which meant a lot.

“The d-line coach, the d-line assistant, coach Pittman, the special teams coach, the defensive coordinator,” Henderson said. “It was just a lot of coaches. They all called me once a week.

“Arkansas put a lot of effort into recruiting me. The coaches showed me they wanted me. They want me and I want to make an impact for them.”

Henderson received an offer from the Crimson Tide in September. Yet he felt at home with Arkansas, calling it “the best place to be in my eyes.”

Two main factors of Henderson’s decision were the ability to make a big difference on the field and produce at a high level. The four-star feels like he can achieve those goals best with the Razorbacks.

“I decided to play here because they need EDGE guys,” Kavion Henderson said. “Alabama, they already got what they got. They wanted to add more talent, but I just wanted to go to Arkansas to make a mark. Alabama’s already doing a great job. I just want to help (Arkansas) out. There’s belief in Arkansas. I want to let the people know and I think they’ll be excited too because it’s the best for me.”
