Well, the worm has definitely turned.
So many in the media are hollering about it now. Even Finebaum earlier today. Danny/Trey at HS... Irwin, and Enos is doing something our Oline can't... He is Blocking everyone on twitter...

quote:talent report deal is overblown. Oklahoma doesn’t have great in state talent. Iowa damn sure doesn’t have great in state talent and they’d beat us like a drum if we played next Saturday. Also, it’s not the losses to more talented teams that pisses people off, it’s the losses to byu and liberty that piss people off and getting embarrassed by others that piss people off. A&M has more talent sure, but not so much to where we should’ve looked the way we did last Saturday. Also with the portal you can actually overcome not having great high school recruiting classes a lot easier in todays world. Besides Texas, Georgia, and Florida gets recruited by everyone now and kids are willing to go wherever the money takes them. Being from Texas doesn’t mean you won’t go to bama, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio state, etc. so it’s not like even schools that reside in the states with a ton of high school talent have as much of an inherent recruiting advantage the way they did 40 years ago because todays kids are more willing than ever to fly across country at 18. Not that big a deal when you can FaceTime mom and dad whenever and they can put life360 on your phone.
If I were a well known college football coach, I would view the recruiting talent report Drew linked, the 20 year history of lack of success, the drama from flying banners, to motor cycle wrecks, to Smile, to Bert, to this... and run like hell.

God knows I'm no white knight for the media, but Sam can't have it both ways. You can't yuck it up with absolute fools like Bob fricking Holt asking the tough ones like "talk about how great a kid Rocket is" but then get pissy and standoffish the minute someone actually asks a legitimate question pertaining to depth, scheme, approach, preparation, etc.
I'm not a huge Biddy fan but he's by far the best of the bunch who regularly cover the football program and attend press conferences. He asked a legitimate question about why we were rotating offensive linemen after the Kent State game and whether we knew who our starters were and Pittman got unnecessarily shitty with him. Biddy was right, it's uncharacteristic of a P5 team to be rotating linemen as much as we were 2 games into the season, as you'd have ironed out your starting 5 by then. So I can understand a guy like him being out on Pittman after those types of pissy exchanges and ultimately being proven right.
I don't remember what Petrino's pressers were like (save for the one with a neck brace), but I can't imagine he suffered fools like Bob Holt lightly. Pittman sure seems to do it gladly in lieu of getting asked actual football questions.

Basketball 12/16 come from out of state… 75%
Baseball 28/39 come from out of state… 71.8%
Football can’t get do that though, we can’t get 90/125 players from out of state.
Poor ol Arkansas… so many chicken littles on this forum.

sec record currently... 100/152
To be fair, around 69 of those losses came in the 10 years. Compared to around 80 losses in our first 20 years in the SEC. Quick math here, also, so may be slightly off.

and what type of coaches could we hire in that time frame? Is there a reason they were so terrible?

32 years in the SEC... 10 year including 2023...55 losses...
22 years previous to 2014... 95 losses...2 ties
Problem with this correlation is that the SEC became much more difficult in the past few years as well. HDN would not have as good as a record with the current SEC strength imho. When TAMU was added, It most certainly didn't help us either.
So now wins...21 in the last 10 years including 2023
and this includes the absolutely worst coach in football history. 16 losses by himself.
In the 22 seasons prior...79 wins.
In neither tabulation were we world beaters in the SEC my friend. But I am concerned with the trend of coaches we were accepting of to hire.

Since 92, Arkansas has lost 72 games by seven points or less and 56 of them are conference games.

so, just winning half of those on score loss games... Puts us in fairly elite company.
Get a coach who can, and wills this into happening.
Who? Someone more like Petrino without the apparent character flaws...
hmm!

I admittedly haven't read every one of your remarks in this thread (and not going to) so I'm not exactly sure of the point you are trying to make. I may actually agree to a point. The part I commented on was where you said we've never been "competitive". Prior to 2012 that was not true. I'm not saying we were elite, but we were darn sure more competitive our first 20 years than we've been since and it's not out of the realm of possibility that we can be again. We can definitely look way more competent and be more respectable than we have in recent years.
ETA...I'd take a coach like Petrino, character flaws and all, if they make us competitive again.

Agreement with most you have said, but can it/will it be done. We have been waiting a long dang time man! and the SEC has become a behemoth to deal with, unlike the first 10-12 years too. More to compete against, with less willingness to do so apparently. I just do not see a change drastic enough to make a great difference, when considering our past decisions. Hopefully wrong on that!

We're not hiring Art Briles or Corch

I know this will sound off coming from me, but hire Briles... Hire him now. If you let pitt go, hire him. I believe, or choose to believe that he was scapegoated by the terrible admin at Baylor, between the Griner crap, Dave Bliss, and Rapegate... That university is horrible.
The Briles fam has been through enough. Hire him with stipulations.

I always figured this much was true, but didn’t he do the same thing at a high school a few years ago and get fired for it?

quote:no, the high school fired him after national media found out they’d hired briles. Nobody in the local community cared but once ESPN and the like got wind of it they made it a big deal even though he coached there for a couple years without issue. Other than maybe recruiting a few kids to the area but that’s nothing out of the ordinary in high school sports

I don’t care, but can you imagine the hit pieces we will get? Holly Rowe will come on crying about how she feels unsafe calling out games on the field, Beth Mowins would be calling the game: “look at that pass just like the one Art made at me during our interview”, etc…

Arkansas didn't have the balls to keep Petrino or hire Prime. They went safe with Pittman. No way they go with Briles.
I'd be down with bringing Kendal Briles back if he gets Lebby to come with.
If Briles stayed it would have been the perfect time to fire Pittman and give him a trial run but that's just the way I think.

I want Lanning (won’t happen), I’d take Elko… won’t happen.

At this point I’m in for hiring Briles, and I’m not even a Briles fanboy.
