First the Waltons give $120 million to separate the Art Department into a true School of Art, now the Windgate Foundation gives $40 million towards the establishment/expansion of the Art & Design District south of MLK.

God damn, we're rich.

We actually used to have free range herds of Hippies roaming Dickson street. Their plumage was... uninspiring, but you could always find them from their distinctive call of "hey man, got a cigarette?"

Sadly they were hunted to near extinction when the area gentrified. A breeding community was established in Eureka Springs to stabilize the population.

It was an arduous task. Hippies are not prolific breeders. Much like New Zealand has difficulty getting Kakapo to breed, something that only happens when one particularly plant is producing an abundance of fruit, we have had the same difficulty in producing enough weed to encourage breeding between mated pairs.

But nature finds a way.

Not only is NWA becoming an art center for the world a great thing for the community, it is also a great thing for this rare and special species that we've managed to bring back from the brink of extinction. I, for one, welcome the return of the Dickson St. Hippies.

That's a lot of cash, and unexpected. The small area they're calling the Art & Design District is mostly crap warehouses at the moment. The trail goes thru there, and its across MLK from the area called "the Mill District". That's a huge grant.

It's a "university", and any huge infusion of cash like the arts have seen just in the past 4 months is welcome.

The quality of education should increase, not necessarily the quantity of artists. Although I can see this being another thing that attracts rich, liberal retirees to Fayetteville. City govt is already hopelessly liberal, so it shouldn't change much.

I believe you mean 'hipster' and not it's early, pre-evolution ancestor known as the hippie. When the common hippie nearly went extinct from the mid-70s through the early 2000s the few that remained procreated in arid, mostly protected climates with "dank" marijuana like northern California, Utah, New Mexico, and Canada to rebuild the population.

The early to mid-90s saw jam bands like Sublime, Widespread Panic, and Phish popping up at music festivals nationwide and the offspring of those common hippies were suddenly drawn out of hiding and into the general population. Of course any time you have two similar breeds intermixed with hallucogenic and euphoric substances at a Phish concert you'll have procreation, and thus the modern hipster was born.

With the evolution of the internet, craft beer, and arts Renaissance of the early 2000s hipsters are now more common and intertwined with society than ever - even though every single one of them will tell you that they certainly are not.

The modern hipster distinguishes him/herself through many of the same activities and beliefs of their ancestors, except with a newfound sense of self-importance and narcissism. They are also known to outspend their ancestors tenfold on a single button-down flannel shirt, moustache wax, contemporary art no one else understands but them, or growlers of microbrewed craft beer.

Now there are competing scientific theories on that. Some believe that the Hipster is, as the theory you presented stated, a hybrid of the common Hippie (Hippus Sapien) and regular human beings (Homo Sapien). There is quite a bit of scientific evidence that supports this theory.

An alternative theory is that Hipsters are not a Hippie hybrid but a new branch in the Douchebag family (Douchebagus Sapien). As I am sure you know, there are many subspecies of the Douchebag and the Hipster shares common traits associated with that particular branch of humanity.

The third, and final theory is that the Hipster is in fact a hybrid of Hippies and Douchebags with a third species, the Dumbfrick (Dumbfrickus Sapien). Is this theory the Dumbfrick genes are for the most part dominant but that certain characteristics of the Hippie and Douchebag still present within the species.

Regardless it seems likely that without protection the Hipster will out compete the Hippies for resources. There have been talks of labeling the Hipster an invasive species and attempting to cull their numbers. I believe the sticking point is whether licenses should be sold to hunt Hipsters and the practice regulated, or whether they should be considered a vermin species and hunted year round without quotas.

I agree with this school of thought. Hipsters are not hippies. Hippies are floral-skirt wearing stoners. Yogi. The dudes in sarongs and jamaican-flag knit caps.

Hipsters are nerdy, comic-book reading, pseudo-intellectual trend-followers who love craft-beer and ironic t-shirts.

Of course I've had craft beer. I live in Fayetteville.

How does Brent Venables feel about craft beer?

There really isn't many hippies here. If you think there is, you probably haven't traveled much.
