9. Utah Jazz: Anthony Black (Arkansas, PG/SG, Freshman)

The Jazz can add more playmaking at both ends with Black, who'd double as a ball-handling initiator and two-way wing. Coaches may eventually prefer him as the starting point guard, given his strengths as a passer and a 6'6", point-of-attack defender.

13. Toronto Raptors: Nick Smith Jr. (Arkansas, PG/SG, Freshman)

An inefficient season mixed with injury could cause Smith to fall outside the top 10, where he was initially projected thanks to his 6'5" size, shot-making versatility and playmaking flashes. At No. 13, the Raptors would see too enticing of a buy-low opportunity on a potentially dangerous three-level scorer.

35. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Blazers): Ricky Council IV (Arkansas, SG/SF, Junior)

Council could draw first-round looks based on what any three-point shooting improvement could do for an effective creator, two-point shot-maker and tremendous play-finisher.

8. Washington Wizards: Anthony Black
Entering the past season, Nick Smith was supposed to be the top prospect at Arkansas. But it was another five-star freshman in Black, who at 6’7 and extremely versatile showcased almost everything a lottery pick should have. He averaged 12.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg, and 3.9 apg as the lead guard while Smith was injured and showed that he can go off scoring-wise, including back-to-back 26-point games in the Maui Invitational.

Washington is a franchise that has star Bradley Beal and two more 20+ scorers in Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis. Point guard is a glaring need for them and while Black isn’t a true PG, he’s capable of running the offense and can guard the opposing team’s best player. And it would also put pressure on last year’s 1st-round pick, Johnny Davis.

14. New Orleans Pelicans: Nick Smith Jr.
At one point, Smith was a projected top-5 NBA Draft pick. But that was before the injury setback, which limited the 6’5 combo guard to just 12.5 ppg in 17 games played on 38% shooting. He still managed to have five 20+ point games, including 26 points on 5/8 shooting from deep against Georgia. His injury woes could come to someone’s benefit as he’s likely to slide down the draft a bit.

CJ McCollum is entering the end of his prime, while the Dyson Daniels experiment (former top-10 pick) could also be entering its final stage. Smith at his best is a quality scorer and would give the backcourt a boost off the bench. But if he’s fully healthy, maybe the former five-star prospect could end up starting in the future.

29. Indiana Pacers: Jordan Walsh
Walsh didn’t showcase a ton of offensive potential in his freshman year at Arkansas, averaging 7.1 ppg and 3.9 rpg as a starter. He didn’t shoot extremely well and he only went from more than 13 points once, going for 18 against Bradley. But where Walsh shines is on the defensive end, using his 6’7 frame and long wingspan to guard several positions on the court. He’s the kind of player that with more development can become a key rotation piece for any team.

With guys like Tyrese Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, and hopefully, Jarace Walker, the Pacers are going to be very good offensively. But tightening up the defense is going to be important as well and if they don’t take an international player to stash, Walsh is someone with a high ceiling worth taking.

9 Jazz Anthony Black PG – Arkansas – HT: 6-5 3/4 – WT: 210 – WING: 6-7 1/2 – Fr. – A big PG with great handles and elite passing ability. Has special basketball instincts and put on a show his freshman year. The Jazz are building a really nice roster and Black would fit like a glove. bouncy Josh Giddey

26 Pacers (from Cavs) Nick Smith Jr. SG – Arkansas – HT – 6-5 – WT – 185 – Wing – NA – Fr – Smith missed parts of the season with injury and didn’t really find his rhythm. He’s a score first player who needs to get more efficient putting the ball in the basket but has a lot of scoring upside. Jamal Murray lite

37 Thunder (from Wizards) Jordan Walsh SF – Arkansas – HT: 6-7 – WT: 190 – WING: 7-3 – Fr – A fast rising prospect who is a big time athlete with a smooth game. Has elite length and is a standout on both ends. Elite 25 Richard Jefferson, Andre Iguodala

39 Hornets (from Jazz) Ricky Council IV SG – Arkansas – HT: 6-5 – WT: 208 – WING: 6-9 – Jr – Council IV is a talented scorer with high-end athleticism. Is starting to hit the 3 ball at a better clip. JR Smith

Sounds like Walsh's stock has risen pretty good and he'll be staying in the draft

Feels like the most likely scenario at this point is Walsh is gone, Devo stays, leaving us with 1 more spot to fill? Which would presumably/hopefully be Holland?

Most likely, but if the dream scenario of adding a Graham or Brown were to come to fruition, room would be made.

3. KOBE BROWN REACTS TO TRANSFER PORTAL RUMORS

quote:

Kobe Brown became one of the best players in the SEC last season, totaling 15.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward jumped onto NBA radars after shooting 59.8% on 2s, 45.5% from 3-point range and 79.2% from the free throw line.

But Brown has been the subject of many transfer portal whispers. Brown is a graduate transfer, so the May 11 deadline to enter the portal does not apply.

“It caught me completely off guard," Brown said. "I’ve been so locked in with NBA stuff. I’ve been to CoMo (Columbia, Missouri), probably twice in the past two months just for exams. I’ve had my Twitter and Instagram notifications completely off. I get messages. My friend hit me one time like, ‘Yo, you’re going to Kentucky?’ I’m like, ‘I am?’ Another friend was like, ‘You’re going to Arkansas?’ And I’m like, ‘Apparently!’ I had no idea. They’re talking all over Twitter. I don’t look at it. I’m more worried about the NBA right now, I’ll deal with college when that time comes, if it comes."

quote:

7. ALL EYES ON GRANT NELSON

quote:

North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson is the top-rated, uncommitted player in the portal. Dozens of programs have reached out to Nelson's camp with Kentucky among the hot-shot destinations. Arkansas coach Eric Musselman was posted up in Wintrust Arena watching the scrimmages, which just so happened to feature Nelson. Houston is another squad that came up in conversations surrounding Nelson.

But Nelson was mum on his next steps. Nelson deflected all questions about the transfer portal and noted that his brother, Justin, is handling all of the latest developments.

Nelson measured in at 6-foot-10 without shoes, but it was his mobility that had some buzzing. Nelson had the top lane agility time (9.99 seconds), and he had a 35.5-inch vertical. Nelson didn’t go nuts in any of the scrimmages (six points, four rebounds, two assists in Game 1 and seven points, three rebounds, one assist, two turnovers, one block in Game 2), but he knocked down a pair of catch-and-shoot triples.

His length, fluidity and athleticism stood out on the defensive end. Nelson noted he had nine meetings with NBA teams so far, including Milwaukee and Dallas.

"If you play the right brand of basketball, the ball kind of finds you," Nelson said. "I feel like I’ve been trying to be unselfish but at some points, you have to try and get downhill on somebody and make the right play. I’ve been known for blocking shots, but I don’t think I’ve been known for guarding people on the perimeter. I tested really well. I can move well laterally. I think it’s a matter of getting into the ball a little more.”

10. QUICK QUOTES ON STAY-OR-GO DECISIONS

quote:

Arkansas wing Jordan Walsh: “It would kinda just be if some team told me that they were going to take me for sure. I leave that to my agency. I go out and hoop and let him tell me when I’m done, you feel me? That’s how I take it, just one step at a time.”

Latest on Walsh is teams expect him to go in the 20-45 range.

IMO he stays in the draft because coming back isn't going to make him jump that much higher being a year older.

Positive vibes on Devo coming back this morning. Leaves one spot left for Holland unless one of the big fish wants to come.

No if Walsh came back and showed he could consistently hit outside shot he'd be a top 10 lock in next years historicly weak draft class.

This is classic bird in the hand two in the bush. He can live his dream out in a month.

EL ELLIS: TRANSFERRED FROM LOUISVILLE TO ARKANSAS

quote:

Transfer portal rating: No. 67 overall

Arkansas has added an outrageous amount of talent to its backcourt both from the transfer portal and the high school ranks. Devo Davis still has a stay-or-go decision to make which could throw another wrench into the mix. Regardless, sacrifices might need to be made. When Arkansas was at full strength late in the season, it was five-star freshman Nick Smith Jr. who had to accept a diminished role due because Davis, Anthony Black and Ricky Council IV couldn’t come off the floor.

But we might have to look back at 2021-22 to examine the potential pendulum swings for Ellis. The Louisville transfer could easily end up being Arkansas’ JD Notae who earned a 29% usage rate because of his pure shot-creation ability. Ellis has that in his bag, and he just did that last year for Louisville. He could also end up being Arkansas’ version of Chris Lykes who has to accept a limited role off the bench because there are some really talented dudes in this Hogs’ backcourt. Guys like five-star Layden Blocker, Washington transfer Keyon Menifield, Houston transfer Tramon Mark or Temple transfer Khalif Battle will all be competing with Ellis for minutes. Ellis' pendulum swings could be quite drastic.

I'm on record that he won't make it past the Spurs 2nd round pick and still believe it.

So many things about JW just scream big Spurs energy. He fits well on the timeline. Unique looks. Max effort guy. etc....

Was hoping Coulibaly might be there but he's definitely going 1st round.

After watching this Nugs/Lake series, I think LAL at #21 is NSJ's floor. DLO has been unplayable in that series.

5. TRAMON MARK, JR: COMMITTED TO ARKANSAS

quote:

Tramon Mark committing to Arkansas was one of my favorite fits of the transfer cycle. Mark was a key part to Houston’s success over the past few years and his defensive grit will blend perfectly with the way Eric Mussleman likes to play. Defense will be the key, but Mark can also score. He put up 15+ points on six different occasions last season.
