Plus Dave calling for some bunts is a very good thing.
Man, this. Our fundamental execution was almost perfect this weekend. We were sacrificing all over the place - bunts, sac flys, etc. Even stole a few bases that ended up paying off. With all of our offensive injuries, I’m a big fan of playing this way. And I hope we continue to play this way even when some of the big bats return to the lineup. Why not have the best of both worlds?

This is a scrappy bunch…when we get Wegner, Jossenberger, and Tygart all back full tilt, Hogs will be a damned tough out. While today was nearly a debacle, it was good to get those arms action. I thought Coil did a good job filling up the zone. Sometimes a guy puts a good swing on it.
These are basically my thoughts. We’re playing like the national seed of misfit toys.
It’s a bit of the opposite of the ‘21 team. We looked good all year but we just never got enough arms or bats to develop in action (partially from no midweek games) to help us when it mattered, so we ended up with basically Wick and Kopps to try and get us to Omaha.

I'm one of his dislikers (won't go so far as to call myself a hater). He has been having a lot of productive plate appearances for the past three or so games. Whether it being walks, bunts, little pee dribblers that allows him a base, etc.
If he can keep that up, I'll bite my tongue. It's like the Moneyball movie...just find a way to get on base.
Not to get everything sidetracked, but Moneyball is a fantastic movie. Top five for me. Everyone needs to see that.

Not to throw cold water on our parade, but DVH’s postgame presser after game 3 revealed some more injury news.
Stovall’s throwing arm is extremely sore (so much so that he was almost taken out before the 9th). Also, Peyton Holt twisted his ankle so badly in warmups that he was on crutches.
You can’t make this stuff up. DVH was to the point where he was laughing in his presser because we’ve been just obliterated by injuries.

How in the world do you get a sore arm playing 2nd base?

More than likely due to the physical nature of middle infield.
Diving for balls and landing oddly can cause a ton of arm soreness that is exacerbated by 4-3 and 4-6 putout throws.
I noticed in the 8th and 9th that he seemed to double clutch and hesitate on his throw, so much so that I sort of yelled “throw it!” at my TV when he had a routine 4-3 that seemed to take forever.

Also per DVH, Dylan Carter is getting an MRI on Monday. First report was good, but “they always are.” DVH said if the report is good “we’ll see him again this year,” which tells me we won’t see him until Hoover or the regional.
When asked about Josenberger, it sounded similar. He said TJ was working his butt off to get back but that we “definitely” wouldn’t see him this weekend, which tells we probably don’t see him until Vandy or Hoover.
Wegner wasn’t touched on, but I see him on a similar trajectory as Josenberger. You’d like to get them back for the last series so they can get re-acclimated to live pitching before the regional.

I think Wegner is a maybe for South Carolina, most likely for Vanderbilt.

In all honesty, and I open this question up to all the fans... have we ever had a year like this as regards injuries across every major sport? Football, basketball, baseball.
We looked super promising in all three sports going into the start of the academic year and in all three sports we had key injuries. It tanked the football team, derailed the basketball team, and hasn't been sunshine and lollipops for the baseball team.
I really can't think of a year where the Big 3 sports all had a rash of injuries like this.

As far as across the board, it has to be the worst by far, especially to our best players in each of the sports.

Man some of our guys are really struggling in the minors.
Robert Moore batting a paltry .167 high A with a .250 OBP. Battles even worse .143 with a .200 OBP.
Wallace is doing very well. No surprise there. Batting .306 with a .414 OBP.
Pallette 0-1 2.92 ERA in 12 innings.

Moore was never really a good hitter.
He had the second lowest BA in the lineup last season at .232. Everyone shite on Gregory for being an automatic out in the lineup last year, but he finished only 20 points below Moore in BA and actually had a better OBP (.414 to .374). Moore also finished last season with the lowest BA on the team in conference games (.213 to Gregory’s .217).
In 2021 he had the second highest overall BA on the team, but again had the second lowest in SEC play.
Not by any means shitting on the kid, but his glove tends to overshadow his weakness at the plate.

The injuries was bad but the coaching wasn't good either. Lost some games that Arkansas shouldn't have lost.
Basketball and expectations were high and a letdown was coming on. Sweet Sixteen but still a season that had empty calories.
Can't complain about baseball. Good coaching can overcome some injuries and DVH is doing a good job. Sam needs to take notes from DVH.

He’s had it all year. It is part of the reason for his hitting woes. They have tried to rest it as much as possible. That’s why he rarely plays midweek games

He had Casey Martin syndrome. Like Casey, it's carried over into pro ball.

It happens.
Heston had 6 HR total last year in low and high A and now he had 6 in 18 games.
Blaine had a horrible 2019 season and now he’s been up and down but solidifying in AAA.
And Dominic Fletcher was called up and got a double for the Dbacks.
The talent across baseball right now after almost every team is unreal. If I didn’t love Camden Yards so much I’d spend more time going to the Os minor league games. Their farm system is just so stacked, even with the Grayson, Gunner, etc. promotions.
ETA: should probably make a thread for Dom

I might be being myopic, but this does feel like one of DVH’s best coaching jobs.
Despite being decimated by injuries he keeps pushing the right buttons and making the right moves when it comes to the lineup and pitching.
He said in his postgame press conference Saturday that we basically had no one left in the pen after Coil. It was McLaughlin and then Sean Fitzpatrick, who’s a freshman lefty who’s only pitched 2.1 innings this season and 0 in SEC games.
The fact that we are where we are is a huge testament to the grit of our players and mettle of our coaches.

Injury updates according to Matt Jones of WholeHogSports
quote:
At Swatter’s Club today, Van Horn said:
Peyton Stovall is dealing with a right shoulder injury that is causing a lot of pain and affecting him when he swings the bat. He won’t play tomorrow but will play at Mississippi State.
Dylan Carter is having an MRI today. He had a negative MRI last week, but this one has dye that will find a tear if one exists. The hope is he has an ulnar nerve injury in his elbow and can return in a week or two.
Jared Wegner gets the pins out of his broken thumb next Monday. He can play at any point after that as long as he can tolerate the pain. Van Horn said he would not be surprised if Wegner plays against South Carolina.
Tavian Josenberger’s hamstring is improving. He might be available for the South Carolina series, but his return is more likely at Vanderbilt.
Brady Tygart’s pitch count will increase to about 35 this week against Mississippi State and around 60-65 the following week against South Carolina.
