Yeah he averaged 2.39 blocks per game last year at RI while Makhi averaged 1.39.

I wish we could get them both involved more or at least see which one is playing better any particular night.

I can't ever tell them apart. Together though they make up a solid player regardless of who is on the floor. They're great role players for us right now.

Looks like Missouri could be dangerous this season. They laid the lumber to Illinois last night. Thank God we've got talent to spare because this is going to be a long SEC season.

Makhi is not a role player. He’s better than Makhel and a key starter right now.

Some thoughts before we go into conference play

-Although Crieghton's slide recently has hurt the SOS (did get a win last night with Kalkbrenner back), the team did their job. Avoiding a bad loss was the biggest goal. I still wish we experienced a true road game but some of those Maui games provided some needed intensity.

-Not going to act like missing Brazile isn't important but I like what we have seen so far. Thankfully this team has the scoring threats to pick up the slack while NSJ is out as well. We are a deep team but we can't survive too many more injuries.

-The only two areas of concern in my eyes right now are 3 point shooting and our fouling. In regards to the first issue, Muss has shown we can produce great teams even when we struggle from deep. Something I noticed is the difference in attempts from this team to last year's team. Only 26.5% of our field goal attempts are 3s, last year it was 34.2%. That tells me that we are being smarter about our attempts. Helps to negate the weakness there. Many our players are streaky shooters as well. In regards to the other issue of fouling, obviously some of that is just the way we actively play defense. Might bite us in the arse in some road games but it is what it is.

-Hard to really complain about any of the players on the team. Devo is going to drive us nuts at times but in the last three games he had 8 assists/3 turnovers. That with good defense and good shot selection is all we need from him. Johnson is pretty much the perfect role player. He finds points for himself without needing plays called for him. Seems like we can all see the freshman getting better as the season goes on. This version of RCIV is better than anyone could ever hope.

Re: fouls committed

That’s one thing I’m looking forward to this year in SEC play. Or I think I am. Last year, we were so heavily dependent upon Notae and it seemed he was always picking up his 2nd foul at about the 8 min mark remaining in the 1st half. And we’d be holding on for dear life til halftime.

This year, we don’t seem to be as dependent on any one person so I’m hoping this isn’t as much of an issue. Obviously a big help in this department will be if we get NSJ back.

That is a good point

Depth certainly helps foul issues

Pinion could help replace NSJ's impact offensively if he can hold up on D

I have an irrational affinity for white boys with a 3 point shot. I know I'm part of the problem

It's ok in this case. He's a 6'5 shooter who was a top 100 player. He's actually bound to be pretty good.

Per UA release, Nick Smith Jr will not play @LSU on Wednesday.

ETA: remains “out indefinitely”

This has to be some of the strangest shite I've ever seen.

Nothing strange about Muss using the terms "knee management".

Read between the lines.

Uh wasn’t it expected he’d be out until mid January?

No clue. Everything is so vague. Someone needs to grow a pair

Unfortunate reality with top prospects. At least he isn't out for the year

LSU is a solid club but didn't play a very tough schedule and hasn't played well in margins when it comes to the analytics.

We should be able to exploit their defense inside of 3. Do that and don't excessively foul.

What terminology are you expecting to hear?

Getting the best outcome for Nsj is the best outcome for Arkansas.

If they say something more definitive, the same people grumbling about "knee management" will simply pivot and complain about him "shutting it down."

I'm not really in the freaking out camp, but the answer to this is the same they'd use for everyone else. A diagnosis of the injury with an expected timetable of return.

Honestly them being so secretive about it only feeds the notion I have that it might be more serious than they're letting on. No reason in protecting his draft stock being secretive like this if it's a nothingburger he'll recover from in no time. But I'm just a battered Hog fan coming up with reasons to worry about the best times in basketball since Nolan.

Trying to read between the lines, feels like a combination of a few things.

1) Its bad enough where he doesn't feel or look 100%, I think everyone has seen that already.

2) He and his camp are trying to balance some PT to keep him in the mix for a top 5-10 pick while not making him look "bad" where he will drop drastically on boards from poor performances.

3) Muss is playing ball in that he knows this is the new norm with recruits of that nature and is likely simply hopeful he can get something out of him.

It's annoying and frustrating but Nick Smith signing and playing 3 games for us is still a net positive.

This has happened multiple times with multiple players at Duke in the last 5 years. Welcome to the big time boys.

End of the day, I hope he plays for us but in all reality, when he has played, he didn't look healthy or up to speed enough to be a huge game changer for us. We're certainly "better" with him as an option, but the long term benefits of getting guys like Graham and Pinion extra PT, may be worthwhile.
