I watched through the 3rd quarter and thought it was done and we were headed home. Multitasked while working at the office.

ANd, we won... Evidently I need to just quit watching for the benefit of the team!

We’re 1-5 in one possession games. Flip that and we’re probably a 4 seed. We’re either unlucky or not clutch. Maybe both.
It's the piss poor free throw shooting.

Just like in football. We were 1-4 in one possession games in the regular season and were 13 points away from 10-2.

I've been saying it for a while, but there are a ton of parallels between our football and basketball teams this year.

I haven’t done the maths, so I don’t know if it’s that, but if it is I don’t get it.

Cal lost at least 2 championships because of free throws. Quit taking NBA guys if they can’t do the basics. Or make that their workouts. How can you not shoot 80% if you are a NBA guard or forward?

It's not really the NBA guys tanking the FT %, it is the bigs.
Council, Black, Smith, Davis, Walsh combining for 74%. not great, not terrible.

The Mitchells, Graham and Kamani combine for 52%

The only one with NBA hope is Graham, but why would you take a 6-7 man if he can’t hit free throws?

Graham's 3 point shooting won't let him touch an NBA court. You have to be an exceptional defender/rebounder to play in the NBA without spacing

Biggest difference in last years team and this was winning close games. We’re 1-5 in one possession games.

not to beat a dead horse but back to my previous post on Quad 1 away games. we have played 6 of them this year vs. 3 of them last year. We won the same amount both years, 1, just had more on the schedule this year.

This year we played @ Baylor vs. hosting West Virginia last year

This year our away conference schedule looks like this:
LSU,Auburn, Vandy, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Alabama, Tennessee
Avg KenPom of 54 and 5 top 30 opponents

Last year our away conference schedule was Miss St, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Florida, Tenn
Avg KenPom 74 and 3 top 30 opponents

I feel like the first 3 seasons, each team finally came together and gelled and had a defined leader.

That's absent this year.

It is worrisome that our "premier" teams have had early season injuries, faltered in every close game, and had super promising seasons that appear to be just petering out.

Going into football this year all signs indicated this was going to be a special year for Arkansas sports. Instead... we've had this. Not as soul destroying as Chad Morris I will grant you, but still a kick to the daddybags.

I think we have one guy at 80%, NSJ. That’s no a recipe for success. Plus idk how many times we miss the front end of a 1 and 1. Those are killers.

Kansas won the natty last year and shot 71.7% from FT with no major role player over 76%

Just looking at 1 possession games last year versus this year, here's what I'm seeing.

2022 - 1 possession game statistics:
Record: 4-2
FTA - 154
FTM - 120
FT% - 78% (versus 75.2% season)
3PTA - 129
3PTM - 37
3PT% - 29% (versus 30.7% season)

2023 - 1 possession game statistics:
Record: 1-5
FTA - 106
FTM - 76
FT% - 72% (versus 69.2% season)
3PTA - 101
3PTM - 32
3PT% - 32% (versus 32.1% season)

So, this year's team has a better 3PT%, but worse FT%. No surprise.

Biggest difference I see is in volume of FTAs. In 1 possession games last year they attempted 25.6 FTs on average, as compared to 17.6 FTs this season. 8 FTAs/game is huge. Even if you only make half of them, you win every 1 possession game.

What's likely driving this? Where the game is played.

2022 - 1 possession games
Home - 5
Road - 1
Neutral- 0

2023 - 1 possession games
Home - 0
Road - 5
Neutral - 1

totally agree. think if this year's team had last year's schedule, we are 2 seeds higher and if last year's team had this year's schedule, they are 2 seeds lower

Looking further, I also think it's a function of not getting much production from the frontcourt players.

In SEC games, the Mitchell Twins + Graham are a combined 39-75 from the line (52%). Terrible. Not to mention they turn the ball over a lot and aren't good passers. 45 TOs to 25 assists. Rim protection (67 blocks) is really what they are bringing to the table.

Compare that to J. Williams last year. Again SEC games only: 68-86 from the line (78%). 39 assists to 29 TOs, but only 22 blocks.

Yes, keeping brazile healthy would have been a major factor in preventing either graham or makhel from getting as many minutes.

Playing hack-a-shaq is a viable strategy against our current bigs, which is what you are seeing. It works even better if the foul isn't called
