any chance we look at a guy like musselman? I heard his name pop up earlier but sounds like sampson stuff drowned everything else out.

I don’t think he’s on the wish list. He expressed interest but it was on his side only. I still don’t think this gets past Sampson unless Yurachek has an ace up his sleeve

Breaking News: Arkansas to hire John L. Smith as the new head basketball coach. Since he has never coached b-ball, he reportedly is asking for a 1 yr deal to the ‘Jelly of the month club’.

There was a pay board post many days ago that said there is a no name coach that no one knows or has really heard of that is a legit candidate should we miss on a couple.


Everyone ran with Mike Young of Wofford with that, but Chris Jans fits that bill more than him.


Now he may very well be a good coach, and is maybe one of the top up and comer unknown guys out there, but he's not proven enough for a P5 job yet.

He is of the Gregg Marshall tree, spent 2007-2014 at WSU as his top assistant. Got a head gig at Bowling Green where he was fired after a year for being drunk at a bar engaging in lewd and inappropriate behavior towards women. Then spent 2 more years at WSU under Marshall before getting the NMSU job.

He went 159-45 (.779) as a JUCO head coach early on.

And he is 79-23 (.775) as a D1 head coach. 28-6 first year at NMSU, lost in the first round of the NCAAT. 30-5 this year, lost in the first round of the NCAAT.

I think HY won't frick around. If he gets a no from his top 2 or 3, I think he goes quickly and gets a guy like this NM State guy, not only to look confident and save face, but alos to get the jump on anyone else in the coaching mix before an under the radar guy gets swept up by a lesser basketball school.

I think Realistically, now whatever slim chance we ever had at Beard is probably gone.

If the Sampson offer thing is true, he may have said, let me sleep on it, I'll let you know tomorrow. I would assume if we go to tomorrow afternoon with no coaching hire leaks, Sampson has passed.
