They also didn’t play a very hard schedule. That’s the point. The 2012 and 2015 teams played much harder schedules and far better offenses. Yet they were also no.1 in total defense.
Also don’t think Upshaw does as well in today’s defenses. There’s a reason he washed out of the NFL.

He played 5 seasons. He gets a pension. That's hardly washing out. He would dominate today like he did then. Our D is now is "lighter" and "faster" and getting dominated.
2011 was the most physical and straight up meanest team I've seen regardless of who they played.

For a guy that was a second rounder and was once projected as a 1st round pick, he didn’t live up to the hype. He started for about 3 seasons in league and even then he wasn’t a full time starter. He was primarily a run stopper because he couldn’t do much as a pass rusher.

They also played 2 good teams all season. You have no idea for sure how they would’ve fared versus a much tougher schedule. In addition, as mentioned before, the 2012 and 2015 teams had better offenses.

Yeah, but based on their schedule, it's hard to define how good that 2011 D actually was; the highest ranked offense they played that year was Arkansas (#29 in total offense). The other FBS offenses we faced that year were ranked 84 or worse in total offense. Dont'a Hightower said the best offense we played all year was an FCS team, Georgia Southern...and they rushed for over 300 yards against us. How would they have done against a Deshaun Watson, Chad Kelly, Johnny Football, Cam Newton, or Nick Marshall offense? Maybe they would've excelled but it's hard to tell as they didn't face an offense anywhere near that caliber...
By comparison, the 2015 team played 7 FBS teams in the top 50 in total offense (highest were Ole Miss at 10 & Clemson at 11)...and the '15 D played against 11 FBS offenses better in total offense than the second best FBS offense that the '11 team faced...

Good point. We’ll never know how they would have done against top offenses. Clemson’s offense in 2015 was probably better than any offense in CFB in 2011.

Our 2015 D was lighter, but we still had some massive guys (who could move) up front. I think Reed and Robinson were both 300-310+. Ragland and Foster were also fairly heavy (not Hightower or Upshaw-heavy though).
Also, while the 2015 D allowed 43 and 40 to Ole Miss and Clemson, I don’t believe that would be the outcome against every elite offense (e.g., a match against 2013 FSU or 2012 Texas A&M).
