Suttles just posted this on The Athletic.
quote:

With a background working with the defensive line and linebackers, Lupoi had limited knowledge of coaching the secondary and how everything comes together, especially in the back end of the defense. Once Jeremy Pruitt left to be the head coach at Tennessee, Saban took a chance on Lupoi and made him the coordinator. To mitigate the risk, Saban also brought in Pete Golding, who had served as the defense coordinator at UTSA. Golding was viewed as a bright defensive mind and had no connection to Saban prior to the hiring. He was high on Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley’s list when hiring a new defensive coordinator for the Sooners after the season.

Multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic that Golding took on more and more responsibilities from Lupoi as the season went on, to the point that Golding was calling the defense. Most will assume that Golding is next in line to coordinate the Crimson Tide defense. However, that’s not a given. Saban will exhaust all avenues to bring in an experienced defensive mind, preferably one who is familiar with Saban’s system. That doesn’t mean that Golding won’t be the defensive coordinator. It’s just not a slam dunk decision as it was when Smart left and Saban made exactly one phone call to fill the position, and that was to Pruitt. At this time, the expectation is that Golding will remain with the program in 2019.

Gene Chiz gets my vote.

I just vomited in my mouth a little.

Please go read any and all articles you can find regarding the state of the Iowa State defense when Paul Rhodes took over for Chizik, and please do a little research into auburn's ability to tackled under Chizik's tenure. Hint: they couldn't.

I think the cat shite my beagle just ate would be a better DC at Bama than Gene Chizik.

Washington may lose Lake but it won't be the end of the world for them. Pete Kwaitkowski will just step back up into dc role.

One thing that Saban says about replacing coaches is that he doesnt look for guys who will come in and coach new schemes but guys who can coach the Bama scheme and maybe tweak that scheme. Use the talent that is available and keep the Bama Vocabulary. That way only the new coach has to learn the terminology and the players continue...
Gus has his own scheme, not sure he would want to learn Saban's D? Seems he did a good job at the Barn, it was the O that eventually let them down and when he was DC for NC; NC did a fairly good job in the ACC.
I just hope for someone who can pull the D together; get more rotation for PT (cut down on Fatigue, and builds bench strength and experience from year to year).
Love to have some shut down corners and Safeties that endanger opposing O's, ILB's who are terrors as well as unblockable DLine. But, thats just me.

This is not at all comforting if we are handing over the keys of the Defense to him.

Which is why I think that Lake makes sense at the primary DC and play-caller. Let him come in and run the defense which he has done, and let Golding learn from him. Lake then leaves in a year or two for a HC and Golding takes over DC.
