Must respectfully disagree. That team pulled almost half of their wins out of their arse. Go back and look at their schedule.

I listened to this game on the radio because no tv.
71 Nebraska must’ve been stout. I was born in 75.
The 2009 Florida team was like old USC and Miami teams, loaded with talent and what I always wanted our teams to be. Around 2008, it started happening.

When your matching teams from different eras you have to look at their relative strength.
I don't think any college team as been relatively stronger than say the top 20 teams than that Nebraska team.
No Alabama team was ever physically beaten so badly.
Our offensive live was so outmatched it was incredible.
LSU was a great team. But relative to their time, they were not in the same category.
What's strange is the difference across eras is less in boxing than it seems to be in other sports. I think the reason is training methods have remained more consistent in boxing.

Coach Bryant in his autobiography said that Bud Wilkinson (I think) told him before that Orange Bowl game that Nebraska had the most good football players that had he had ever seen on one team at the same time.

You have a Heisman NFL All-Pro QB, the two best WRs in the NFL, an AA RB and a bunch of other NFL draft picks scattered in there.
The best defense we played was 2011 LSU and the best team was 2019 LSU.
All those players were on LSU's 2018 team that Alabama beat 29-0 in Baton Rouge.

I think 2018 Clemson is an underrated all-time great team that really had no weaknesses at any position on either side of the ball. Once they got rolling with Lawrence, they were damn tough.
2019 LSU probably wasn’t as well rounded overall as 2018 Clemson, but they were so otherworldly at QB and WR that year it would be hard to bet against them vs. anyone.

I was in the third grade when we played Nebraska in the 71 Orange Bowl. I was so young that I had never seen Alabama get blown out. I was so much Bama that when we went back to school and the teacher was asking each student what their favorite Christmas present was I said, “My Johnny Musso jersey.” (I had gotten a go cart that Christmas. My parents somehow knew what I had said before I got home! I think my dad actually liked it.
Anyway, for you young guys on here please understand that we can’t compare time periods. But when the actual game was played, 71 Nebraska was incredible. The closest thing I can compare it to in a championship game was Alabama’s dominance over Notre Dame in 2012 or when Oklahoma beat Florida.
