Defining “breakout player” as someone who didn’t contribute last year (or a true freshman) that becomes a critical player.
My picks are: Justice Haynes (RB) and Caleb Downs (DB).
Safe picks but probably going to be true.
Defining “takes the next step player” as someone who contributed to last year’s team but becomes a star…likely set themselves up for a Junior year draft declaration in the process.
My picks: Jacorey Brooks (WR) and Dallas Turner (OLB).
Again, not surprising picks. I think Brooks will benefit from a less NFL starter caliber QB and have his targets go up dramatically. He was the most consistent receiver last year but Young spread it around more. He’s a true junior so I gotta imagine he’s trying to earn that payday too.
Dallas Turner had a major regression in 2022. Halved his sacks and became a really undisciplined player with costly penalties. He is a guy who could go pro with a great season so he should be motivated.

Niblack is a good pick since ND’s offenses under Rees targeted TEs generously.

Kendrick Law and Terrion Arnold

It’d be nice to see someone like Jace Mclellan or Jermaine Burton “take the next step”.

Dallas Turner was dealing with injuries. Last summer he had a knee scope and wasn’t himself. Doesn’t mean that he’s a bad player. The media cucks will say otherwise though.

Whether its Lawson or Campbell or whoever. I just want a stand-out wrecker in the middle of our LB's for the first time in a while.

My pick would have been Keanu Koht, but the depth at OLB is just insane these days, so it's going to be a real battle for anyone not named Turner and Braswell to get reps.

Fair but that doesn’t explain the boneheaded dirty hits.

I hope it's a defensive lineman that just wrecks shite.

The hit in the texas QB was clean but I bet he has PTSD from being planted. I hope he remembers that when we play them week 2.

I agree with that but Turner had some bad ones after the Texas game too. I hope the problem was just a part of the general lack of discipline with that unit because their coordinator was an undisciplined drunk.

Me too. According to recruiting rankings our best bet is Smith, Payne, or Goodwine.

Smith regressed bigly and Payne hasn’t done anything of note yet.
I was convinced Tim Smith was Dareus 2.0 after his freshman year, too.

I meant James and we’re talking about breaking out. Payne not doing anything so far is kind of the premise of this thread.

I think whichever QB ends up starting will breakout because of they work they’ve had to put in to earn the job.
I think the OL as a unit breaks out this season due to culture change at that position.
Defensively I think our LB play is much more physical so I’m going to go with Deonte Lawson.
I also think Caleb Downs is just a natural safety who will make it look easy.

I think that #80 Kobe Prentice is going to have a good sophomore year.
