I think an academic center or something? Anyone heard of this? Supposedly Saban is leading the charge to get this done.

Not sure of the details.

Is it the new building on Hackberry? If so, that thing is huge.

Yes. This is academic and athletic related.

UF just opened a 'state of the art' athletic/academic complex. Bama's not sitting idly on that, which is good to see.

There's a Nick Saban Student center going up at St. Francis on the God Quad.

We can spend $12m on that, but we can't afford a hockey arena?

The City and University need to partner on a arena/convention center. Hold larger events, as well as house basketball, gymnastics, and I guess hockey. It's worked at other places.

Our new coach asked for a new hockey arena at the latest budget meeting but was told it was "too much". He estimates that we can build an arena similar to the one Notre Dame built (5k seats) for about $20m.

I think football recruits' parents like hearing about academic centers more than hockey arenas.

Is the new coach any good?

I think if he continues to bring it up, we'll eventually have one soon. I've been to a few games in Pelham and they're fun.

Notre Dame built the Compton Family Ice Arena for $50m. It seats 5,022. Cut out a few of the extra amenities, construction costs are higher in Indiana, the university already has a lot of land, etc. and you have an affordable 5k seat arena.

Here's an article about him. LINK

With him leading the team, I can see us moving up to the NCAA in a few years. He's really trying to get the program's name out there, including trying to get games on the Big 10 Network and the SEC Network.

He's a good follow on titter. @JohnBierchen

How many academic centers do we need?

Hold off putting a big scoreboard in the center for a few years and you knock off $2M of the initial cost.
