Our offense was night/day without #8, which amazes me because I legitimately think he is a couple of rungs below the previous guys we had at the position.

However, for whatever reason, Metchie was apparently the glue that was making the offense click when it was playing well. Bryce was a different QB without him and as good as Williams was, he was less effective in his role without #8 to draw some attention.

When Metchie went down it was upsetting, but in the back of my mind I felt like we would be ok because we had other guys that were maybe even more talented waiting to take his place. I was wrong. We didn't do much of anything for the rest of the SEC Championship, played a kind of weird offensive game in the Cotton Bowl, and then struggled to finish drives tonight, even before Jameson was hurt.

Metch, I'm sorry I doubted and discounted you, bro. We missed you badly.

We could’ve won with Jameson, but losing him was the final straw. Just too many injuries across the board

Metchie might come back, since his injury could slide him to the second. Hopefully Jameson still can go too 15 despite it.

Even with Metchie out, Jamison was enough to win. Just too much to overcome when he went down.

Is what it is though.

Offense was missing 2 WRs, 3RBs and had two banged up OL.
Defense was missing 2 starting CBs and one Star DB. We won't count Allen since he was lost for the whole season.

Something had to give ,sometime.

Yep. There were people trying to discount Metchie’s injury but it was clear in the second half of the SECCG on that he was the star that stirred the drink. He gave defenses a reason no to completely focus on JW.

Yup and it was just a cope. They really thought a freshman with 145 yards was likely to replace a guy with 2100 yards over the last 2 years. He was Bryce’s safety target.

It sucks and Bama might have won had both been healthy. People can play the if and games all day but that’s just football. Injuries happen.

Now it does definitely suck for the two of them. They can’t participate in the NFL combine or Pro Day. Metchie was already not going to be a 1st rounder. I hope it doesn’t drop Williams out of the 1st.

Yep, he was always in the right spot. Not a game breaker but a constant chain mover which we really could have used last night.

Bingo. Bryce knew what he was going to do in almost every situation. Was great at finding the soft spot or sitting down in a zone where he needed to. That stuff takes experience. Metchie's injury was huge.

100% on all of this - especially the last part. Hate it for those guys.

Sucks, because we'd really found our niche with those 2 kind of being the yen (take the top off) and yang (route running technician who is a security blanket). We lost one and it made it tougher. We lost the 2nd one, mid-game against an elite defense, and it was just kind of fatal.

Metchie was the best option route guy on the team. He was very good at reading the routes and DB leverage. He made good breaks to create separation. He does not have elite speed to take the top off but BY trusted him to make the right read and be where the ball needed to be thrown.

Slade was the net best at reading option routes and BY trusted him to be where he should be.

The younger guys in the slot had a higher ceiling but are not yet very good or reliable at making the right reads on option routes. They should get better.

Jamo has pretty good hand but he is fast, not quick. That fast but not quick is why he was a good option at kick return but not punt return. #7 good hands, less speed but better route breaks. #84 better hops and body control but not take the top of speed and not good at reading routes. He needs to get on the juggs machine...alot.

Spring will be very important from a teaching stand point to get the WR room ready for net year. We need 3 guys to come out of spring knowing how to read option routes then spend the summer building "chemistry" with BY.

Good stuff - right on. I think that's probably quite a bit of the reason we didn't see more of Leary and JoJo on the inside. So many of those routes are based on timing and reads, and if you aren't quite there yet on those things the other physical traits are kind of irrelevant.

Of course, those are things that come with time and training. JoJo may have had a bigger role in the playoffs if he hadn't gotten hurt and missed 6 weeks. That definitely hurt. And Leary, obviously, had to start cross training at RB once we had the injury situation, which probably set him back in terms of growth and experience at WR.

All in all - we have some talented kids. They just need experience and to get better at their craft.

JoJo and Leary made really bad reads and ran the wrong route many many times during the season. UGA SECCG, the great pass and catch to Metchie up the left sideline, Leary almost ran the DB covering him back into the play because he read/ran the wrong route. Cotton Bowl, JoJo on the left slot ran a dig to an "open area" but had to cross the face of the DB with inside leverage. BY threw the out route because it was the correct read. JoJo was 10 yards away from the ball when it should have been a 20+ yard catch and run to the sideline. JoJo ran a zone route against man coverage.

Which is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it sucks because if they'd been better at it they could have helped this year. On the other hand, it means that very little about their lack of PT/production this year was based on physical talents. It was because they weren't quite there mentally yet, and as true freshmen that is entirely understandable.

Unless something happened overnight I believe Saban just said medical thinks he might have an ACL. Hopefully they are wrong (I realize that's unlikely).
