I think there is a very good argument to be made that Josh Jacobs was the most under utilized offense player of the Saban era.

I knew he was good while he was here, but I didn’t realize how talented he was until he hit the NFL and was a true feature back.

Applewhite sucked, but if I recall, he wasn't hired as the OC originally. He was hired as the QB coach or maybe WRs, Saban's first OC bailed on us 2 weeks after being hired, and Applewhite got promoted to OC.

Are you thinking of Steve Marshall? He was the initial hire as OL Coach, but left less than a month in to go coach for the Browns.

Joe Pendry was his mentor with Houston who many thought was "put out to pasture", but ended up replacing him at Bama.

Josh Jacobs

I don't think it was handled poorly though, just a tough situation. On one hand you have an NFL back who was already first string and great on pass pro, on the other hand you have an NFL back who is absolutely an electric as a playmaker but needs to be whipped out as a pass option.

Jacobs needed more touches than he got, period.

Don’t care if he was getting them at RB, slot WR or WR, he needed the ball in his hands because he was an absolute weapon.

Easy to say that, but think about it from a coach's perspective. You had Damien Harris who's about as good of an all-purpose back as you can get (and a future NFL starter in his own right) and Najee who everyone knew was going to be a monster and deserved the carries he got as well.

yeah I'd argue that we needed to use Jacobs more against Clemson in that game, especially after he ran rough-shot over Oklahoma the game before, and went for 10.4 ypc and 2 TDs against UGA the game before that. He was cookin' and you ride a player like that until someone stops him.

But in general it worked out for Jacobs because he got to keep more tread on his tires.

I agree that team was absolutely stacked and probably belongs in the “most talented offenses of all time” conversation.

Two future NFL starters at QB
Four future NFL starters at RB
Four future NFL starters at WR

Irv Smith at TE makes it difficult to flex out Jacobs, because you are taking an NFL 1st rd WR off the field to play him.

Too close to call between him and Applewhite. Both were pretty bad, but BoB is old enough to know how to adjust and adapt and he never did. Guess my vote is BoB as the worst.

Jacobs was a victim of being on a team with an unprecedented level of offensive talent. That 2018 Alabama offense had the following future first rounders at the skill positions:

Jerry Jeudy
Jaylen Waddle
DeVonta Smith
Henry Ruggs III
Najee Harris
Josh Jacobs

And that's not including other contributors who went on to become NFL stars like Damien Harris and Irv Smith Jr.
