Was BOB the worst OC we had under Saban

I think he was definitely the most unimaginative OC we’ve had. He put entirely too much on Bryce’s plate. Even when Bryce got hurt he did Milroe no favors by calling plays like Bryce was in.

Judging by CNS comments this week and what players have said everyone is loving Tommy Rees. They have said it’s a more balanced attack and not expecting one player to make a play.

Looking forward to seeing us punish people on the ground this year and then hit the with an aerial assault through the air.

I’m not 100% sure I’m right, but the opinion I hold is that he was the worst we have had. He did not know how to exploit our strengths or a defense’s weaknesses. You mentioned calling plays for Milroe like he was Young. That’s a perfect example.
Everything that has made our offense go the past 2 years has been because of talent and Bryce. If BoB had come back for this coming season, everyone would really get to see just how average his offensive scheme and play calling was.

Is it true we’re going back to more 2012-like on offense?

Some of it had to do with the receivers dropping balls, and our receivers just were not at the elite level we have seen. We basically ran a pro offense and let Bryce audible and read the defense. When he got hurt, there was no one that could run that offense.

You don’t need all NFL receivers to have a good college offense. Georgia just won back to back championships and only one receiver will be a starter in the NFL. BOB route trees were horrible and the receivers were mostly concentrated in one area. Look at the way BOB lost us the game in Knoxville by throwing three straight times leaving time on the clock.

Yes but I believe it’ll be 2012 mixed with 2014 with Blake Sims. Both our qbs are athletes so I think we’ll have some read option plays. Tommy Rees loves using tight ends I think he also likes to run trick plays. He ran a rb pass against us a few years ago. We can guarantee we won’t be in the shotgun on 4th and inches.

You are absolutely correct we would probably be a four loss team with him this season. I feel we were robbed and Bryce was also robbed by having him as OC. As bad as he was he’s one acl tear away from being a national championship OC.

Yes. I don’t necessarily think Applewhite did a great job but he at least had the excuse of lack of talent and experience. BoB is a veteran play caller that refused to adjust.

Applewhite was so bad that allegedly he lost playcalling duties after the MSU game in 2007.

He did have less talent though. So arguably O’Brien committed the worst sin: underachieving with elite talent.

No. Applewhite was worse.
BoB was the most disappointing though since more was expected.

The guy was horrible.

I have said for two years people on this forum won't realize how much talent we wasted until they look back in a year or two.

Then it would have sunk in we just blew a tree-peat we could have easy strolled to even with Golding as DC.

If only Saban didn't hire that button chinned idiot.

Remember that terrible interception Young through at the start of the LSU game? That wasn't O'Brien's fault. Neither were the points that Tennessee scored. And the missed kick.

To be quite honest, we lost the two games in 2022 because of the defense more than the offense. Golding could not get a stop no matter the 3rd down distance in the 4th quarter + OT of the LSU game which is unforgivable because that was a pretty mediocre offense. The Vols game was a disaster but at least the Vols did that to almost everybody.

BOB will always be controversial and I personally was one of his harshest critics, but I think it’s important to at least acknowledge that there were some mitigating factors at play:
-2021 OL was as bad as we’ve had during the Saban era since at least 2008 to the point of almost being non-functional
-The Bryce injury last year really impacted the offense
-Offense put up 49 on the road at UT with an injured BY which given any sort of functional defense should’ve been enough to get us a win and a trip to the playoffs
-2022 offense finished #8 in PPD and #7 in FEI. You can usually win a championship with a top 10 offense
-2021 offense finished #2 in FEI offense and #4 in PPD. That’s really good considering the OL. With Metchie and Jamo that offense wins a championship.

Could he have done more with what he had? Definitely.

Was he the main issue in not winning the last two years? Probably not.

Well if BoB wasn't OC Marrone probably wouldn't have been O-line coach.

I think Marrone was a terrible OL coach, but it didn’t matter who was coaching that group. When you have two starter level guys and a RT who is out of position and non-functional your unit is gonna get smacked around.

You want to blame an OL coach for that mess blame the guy who recruited the players on the field. It’s not a coincidence most of the guys from that two deep ended up transferring.

Again, Marrone was a bad hire, but he was dealt an impossible hand talent wise. Watching everyone but Evan Neal get put on skates against mediocre and thin DL units like LSU was startling.

My only question from that group was whether you leave Latham out there at RT to learn and keep Owens at C where he was solid.

That would’ve given us:
LT: Neal (elite)
LG: Cohen (below avg)
C: Owens (solid)
RG: Ekiyor (good)
RT: Latham (work in progress)

Least creative in an era where offenses have been progressing at an exponential rate.
