Alabama Swimming and Diving Breaks More School Records on Day Two of Tennessee Invitational

Avery Wiseman broke the school women’s 100 breaststroke record twice on the day, while Derek Maas broke the men’s 100 breaststroke standard in the finals, giving him two new UA marks in as many days.

Alabama Swimming and Diving kept its record-breaking ways going on day two of the Tennessee Invitational at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., Friday.

Rookie Avery Wiseman broke the school 100 breaststroke record twice, becoming the first UA woman under 58 seconds in prelims with a 57.87 before bettering that mark in finals with a 57.79 on the way to a second-place finish.

One event later, Derek Maas broke his second school mark in as many days, downing the 100 breaststroke record with a 51.38. On Thursday, he bettered the 200 individual medley mark by going 1:43.12. Maas won both events.

In addition to its new school standards in the breaststroke events, Alabama won nine events on the meet's second day.

Alabama Swimming and Diving Closes Tennessee Invitational with Another School Record

Rookie Avery Wiseman now owns both Alabama’s 100 and 200 breaststroke records after burying the 200 mark on Saturday

Alabama swimming and diving closed out the Tennessee Invitational on a high note with yet another school record, giving the Crimson Tide six new marks over the course of the three-day meet, including four from the women and two from the men.

Avery Wiseman broke the Crimson Tide's 200 breaststroke record during Saturday's prelims, going 2:06.92 to become the first UA woman under 2:07 in the event, before dropping it again in finals with a 2:05.46, becoming the first Tide woman to go under 2:06.

In addition to breaking the last of six school records on the weekend, Alabama won six events on the final day of the meet at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

Alabama's men and women both finished second in the team standings to the homestanding Tennessee Vols, with the women tallying 881.5 points and the men scoring 980.

So as things currently sit, based on best times so far this season... bama women predicted to finish 4th, men at 7th. Other schools still have those mid-season meets left, but don't see the ladies dropping below 6/7, guys maybe around 12th or so. We got all of our relays qualified, so we're not stuck hoping we don't DQ at sec's, so that's nice to have checked off. Really happy to see a couple women and men wrap up individual auto qualfying times in a couple events. A great sign of what end of the season may look like. I've taken a step back from the ledge on the new hire

Alabama Cross Country’s Mercy Chelangat Named NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year

It was the latest honor for the junior standout after already being voted cross country’s SEC Runner of the Year and earning All-America honors, both for the second year in a row

Alabama's Mercy Chelangat became the first member of the women's cross country team to be named the NCAA South Region Athlete of the Year it was announced Tuesday.

Chelangat became the first Alabama woman to earn Southeastern Conference Cross Country Runner of the Year accolades last season, and repeated that recognition earlier this week.

She also won back-to-back individual SEC titles, earned the 2021 NCAA South Regional Championships title and was second at the 2021 NCAA Championships on Saturday after winning the national title last season. Chelangat was also named the 2021 SEC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, another first for the Tide women.

Alabama Swimmer Avery Wiseman Named SEC Freshman of the Week

The Crimson Tide rookie broke a pair of school records during the Tennessee Invitational and is ranked in the top-four nationally in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke

For the second time this season, Alabama swimmer Avery Wiseman has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Wiseman, a freshman from Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada, shattered the Alabama records in both breaststroke events at the Tennessee Invitational with times of 57.46 in the 100 and 2:05.46 in the 200, good for second place at the invite. She also earned automatic bids to the 2022 NCAA Championships in both events and as part of the Crimson Tide's 200 and 400 medley relays.

Wiseman is ranked third in the nation in the 100 breaststroke and first among freshmen and fourth in the nation, first in the SEC and first among freshmen in the 200 breaststroke. She also swam the breaststroke leg on the Tide's school-record 400 medley relay (3:27.18/58.66) and the second leg of the 200 medley relay (1:35.01/26.60), with both relay times ranking third nationally.

Alabama Swimming and Diving Closes November Strong Following Big Weekend in Knoxville

The Crimson Tide broke six school records and bettered 14 automatic qualifying standards for the 2022 NCAA Championships during the three-day Tennessee Invitational

The Alabama swimming and diving squads closed November with an outstanding showing at last weekend's Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn., at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

The women's team won 10 events on the weekend, including three relays and seven individual golds, while the men also tallied 10 wins, with three coming in relays and seven standing as individual victories.

The Crimson Tide broke six school records on the weekend, four individual marks and two relay standards, while also putting 31 performances on UA's all-time top-10 lists. Alabama had four student-athletes earn six individual swims at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The Tide also saw the women's team garner automatic cuts in all five relays, while the men punched their tickets in three.

In addition to 14 automatic cuts, the Tide also accumulated 78 NCAA provisional cuts over the weekend and 11 bids to the 2022 NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, the diver's gateway to the NCAA Championships.

It was a strong way to finish the last combined swimming and diving meet of 2021. The Tide swimmers are now gearing up for exams and a pair of training camps over the winter break. The Alabama divers have one more competition, the Auburn Diving Invitational, on Dec. 15-18.

This will be Alabama Volleyball's third straight coach to resign. Judy Green and Ed Allen both stepped down after being similarly unable to break through.

As Alabama Athletics is experiencing a renaissance in nearly all sports, the Volleyball program has seemed immune as the SEC gets tougher and tougher (headlined with Kentucky winning the conference's first National Title).

It’s a mystery for me - the previous coaches had success elsewhere but burned out here. (Ed Allen had a promising start but bottomed out the last few years). With the resources available, Bama should at least be competitive in the conference (and not 2-16). Not sure what it will take to elevate the program - it will be interesting to see who Byrne brings in this time.
