Does us Getting Burnett decide whether or not we continue to pursue Cardet? Cause Honestly I think I would prefer Cardet

Yeah, Gary probably makes the most sense.

I would hate it if he were to transfer, as I think he’s a perfect 4 for this team when healthy. He can provide some shot-blocking, projects as a very good and switchable defender, and jumps out of the gym when healthy. He’s just flat out better than Rojas even with the limp. Rojas has had one game this year where he made me eat my words, but he has been a huge negative otherwise.

I would drop Rojas, but I don’t think Oats will. Miles would probably be my guess. Sure he’s an Oats guy, but so was Hawkins and Gary has just as much eligibility left as Miles and is seeing real minutes. He also has more positional versatility. We’ll need an Herb replacement and Gary seems like he can fit that mold.

Yeah, I can't argue with any of the points you made.

Ideally it would be Rojas and maybe Oats will surprise us, but I have a feeling Rojas is here to stay.

Gary is not a threat from the three which Oats wants from every position to make his O work.

Nimari Burnett, now officially in the NCAA Transfer Portal via (Texas Tech) told me today: When I pick a school I want opportunities, no lies, and freedom.

So Burnett is pretty much saying that Texas Tech lied to him. Beard made some comments about him that I'd describe as perhaps less than professional. Seems like the relationship got toxic in a hurry. It really never made any sense in the first place.

Was it not weird how it seemed Like TT came out of nowhere last minute? I’m pretty sure they probably offered Nimari a Number we couldn’t get close to and he chose to go there.

I don't see it. I mean literally nothing about their recruiting throws up any red flags. They mostly sign 3*s and the kind of 4*s who are going to be in school for 3-4 years. I think he probably just got caught up in the hype of them being the flavor of the month with their championship game appearance and ignored how terrible of a fit it was for what he was actually looking for in terms of style of play. So he ended up being unhappy and feeling like he had been misled to the point that he quits mid-season.

Yeah, Texas Tech doesn’t seem like a team that pays players. Their classes haven’t been all that great. They have won with mostly transfers.

I'd have to go back and look, but i'm pretty sure they were always there on his list, but most people weren't really considering them as a favorite until towards the very end.

Nimari mentioned multiple times that he was very close with their assistant coach Ulric Maligi and when/after he committed he said that was pretty much what made him choose TT.

Pretty sure Maligi got into trouble at SMU so maybe he did something to flip the odds in Tech’s favor last year?

He got in trouble allegedly for helping a kid get eligible grades wise, not for paying a player, so I doubt that's it. If Burnett was looking to get paid he probably would've had Memphis and or LSU in his top 3 instead of Alabama, Oregon, and Texas Tech.

Agreed. Gary has waaaay more upside than Rojas. He was a 4* top 100 recruit for a reason. I think he can be at least as good of a shooter as Rojas, and he's already better at everything else. He just needs more experience, and time to get back athletically from his injury.

Add me to the list that would rather have Cardet than Burnett. Both are good players and I'd be happy if we get either one of them. I like Cardet's size better and think he is the better shooter. Burnett is a better ball handler and passer, both are good on defense.

Would be awesome if Oats can figure out how to get both and make the numbers work. Really think both could excel in this system.

Center Will Shaver trims pounds, focuses on eight schools

quote:

Will Shaver came in at No. 139 in the latest 2022 Rivals150 rankings earlier this week, making him the No. 19-ranked center in the class.

Shaver spent this summer becoming a commodity among high-major coaches. He went into the summer knowing he needed to transform his body, and if he did that he had the skill that could really take off.

“This summer for me was a turning point. Coming in, I was 280 pounds, couldn’t move, couldn’t jump, but my skill was still there. So, I made sure I turned that around this summer, and did that by dropping 45 pounds and working on my game day in and day out,” Shaver said. “The biggest thing I worked on this summer was becoming a better all-around player, being able to handle it on the perimeter and take people off the dribble. That's something I wanted to add and it’s something I can do now.”

Shaver has narrowed his list to eight schools he is focusing on at this point, the schools he says are contacting him the most.

“I am hearing most from Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Alabama, Georgia and Iowa. I have my eight, and for me it’s about where I can go and make an instant impact but also compete for a national championship.”

IN HIS OWN WORDS

Wake Forest: “I love the way they play. They have a new staff and I really enjoy talking to them. (Steve) Forbes will win there, it’s just a matter of time.”

Virginia Tech: “They have been recruiting me for a while, and I really enjoy the way they play and how they play through their posts.”

Florida State: “It’s Florida State! They’re a very good basketball team and they are the reigning ACC champs. They have a great coaching staff there.”

Alabama: “They were my first offer and the coaches there are great. I really enjoy watching them. Nate Oats can coach!”

Georgia: “(Tom) Crean is a great coach and they have a great staff. I really like the way they play.”

Iowa: “(Center) Luka Garza is a guy I look up to. I think he’s amazing and watching him play is like poetry in motion. Iowa has a great staff and I have enjoyed talking with them a lot.”

Iowa State: “They have been recruiting me for a while. Love the coaches, and the way they play fits my game.”

SHAVER'S RECRUITMENT CONTINUES

With his focus on these eight programs, he did mention one or two more could jump in play were they to extend an offer.

“I do have a couple bluebloods that I’m talking to right now," he said. "If they offer, I will most definitely consider them.”

The clock is on these “bluebloods,” as Shaver does have a commitment target date in place.

“I plan to commit on my birthday, which is September 17th and play my senior year committed to a school,” Shaver said.

With his recent newfound body, Shaver has opened parts of his game he was not even aware he had.

“I’ve heard I play like Kelly Olynyk a lot, Drew Timme, Kevin Love as well. I’d say I am a stretch 4. My favorite thing to do is post up and score down there, but I can shoot the three at a high level and take people off the dribble.”

This season is well on its way for Shaver’s Oak Mountain (Ala.) High School as they are 20 games in. Shaver is pleased with what he and his teammates have done so far.

“We are already 20 game into my junior year. Right now I am averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per game, shooting 63% from the field and 41% from 3.”

But he said there is still work to be done.

“As for my goals, I want to continue playing the way I am playing and hopefully bring home a state championship this year.”

I would think our success on the court is starting to turn heads on the recruiting trail as well. Oats still hasn’t got his best 5 guys for his system yet and we are still winning and winning big.
