LOL...I am familiar with him. Don't see him going off against Bama's roster. He may prove me wrong, but I don't see it.

Coach says they do not know and do not know when they will get word from NCAA on Quinerly but think they have a good chance. When I asked how that would effect his style of play he said that he felt we would have two or three people who could spell Kira one of them being Herb Jones. He said Jones best natural defender he has seen and his athleticism gives him a chance to be a long time NBA player, he is capable of helping run the defense and they are working on his shooting. Coach says they believe that that Petty is capable of being a very good defender. No one will play who does not defend. He will have an 8 to 9 player rotation.

That’s kind of big. Surprising because I didn’t think we were super hard after him (compared to others) nor did I think he had legitimate interest. FWIW 247 has us in his top 4 schools.

Excited to see Herb break out. I was very surprised to see Herb play the way he did last year. He looked like our best player in our scrimmage and had a hype train behind him by both his coaches and in a national sense.
I think a lot of it had to do with his confidence. Oats was literally the perfect coach to help Herb along considering his fast offense and ability to help with shooting.

I know none of us really love Herb as the occasional primary ball handler, but there's a reason why two coaches now have seen him as one of the 2-3 best guys for the job.
I would also guess that means they think Shackleford is more of an off the ball guy for now. Although if we are going to stick to an 8-9 man rotation then a guy like him isn't assured of minutes at all.
Obviously going to play:
Kira
Herb
Petty
Pretty obviously going to play:
Bolden
Rojas
Reese
Galen (some big man is probably going to be left out though)
Then you have:
Shackelford
Gary
Forbes
Hawkins
My guess is Shackelford cracks the rotation along with Gary or Hawkins, but those are just guesses.
Obviously it gets more crowded with Quinerly.

Always find this aspect of coaching interesting as it can really vary between great coaches.

I've always thought of it as a trust thing and confidence in system.

It can definitely be that to many coaches. Some coaches play a deep bench in the regular season to find the players that are going to make a solid 6-8 man rotation and some coaches try get as many players ready for the tournament as possible. As you said though, some of that is flexible based on how comfortable the coach is with the players in general.
Just regarding Arkansas because I'm more familiar with them. Mike Anderson probably plays one of the bigger benches in college basketball when it comes to the tournament because of the system he runs. We would normally run a 8-10 man rotation during tournament games. On the flip side, Musselman runs a very small bench in the tournament (some of that also has to do with what he had to work with). He normally stuck with 6 players and sometimes 7.
From looking at his time in Buffalo, Oats seems to be in the middle of the two which is probably the norm for college basketball in general.

Well, we're coming from the Avery Johnson School of Substituting, where the object is to switch a player out on every play, and have them still be in the flow of the game. It's a challenging system that uses the whole bench and a couple of towel boys equally.
Personally, I'm curious if two players being on the floor at the same time for a while will increase their familiarity with each other and what is happening.
