I'm still optimistic. I think this was our C- level playing at best, and they still almost beat a solid team. We can improve on a lot of things. If Herb is ok, and we don't lose anyone else, we can win some games.

I'm just scared that we don't have the shooters for this offense. I want to continue with this and just deal with the outcomes though. Stick with this system and just bring in the correct players

Man, we need to working on finishing around the basket. We haven’t been good at that in a long time. Trevor Releford spoiled me good on finishing around the rim.

Offense isn’t gonna be the problem this year. It’s gonna be the defense. We are thin inside because of injury so any team that has a good big (like Penn) is going to abuse us because we are gonna have to help inside and that’s gonna lead to kick out open 3’s.

I knew all offseason defense is gonna hold us back

I just want us to work on basic ball handling and passing in transition. And we were rebounding well on the offensive side but couldn’t make simple put backs or even really draw fouls. It’s frustrating as shite to watch them just throw screamers at the back board and miss layup after layup.

Agree. First game together as a unit. Need time to gel with each other. Let’s not forget, two players out with acl injuries that we was counting on.

It’s way better then the shite show we had last year. Had the win tonight, Kira just chocked at the line... it happens.

In my opinion, we'll be very lucky to make the tournament. I don't care about last season and winning 18 games with a non existent coach. This is a brand new team learning a brand new system.

Transitions are tough, and first years often don't get wonderful results, no matter what talent the coach has.

I caught hell for this, but it was a long time ago and I'd just like for the prick that kept throwing it up in my face to speak up

It was a problem tonight, but overall you’re right. Those who thought Hall wouldn’t be much of a loss are starting to see why he was so valuable. The difference in this game was layups. We couldn’t make them and they got way too many of them. Without the presence of anyone close to resembling a shot blocker, there was zero fear from Penn to drive the ball down our throats.

I think we’ve got enough shooters. We don’t have one guy who’s an amazing shooter, but we do have a bunch of guys who can make shots: Kira, Shackleford, Bolden, Petty, Reese.

The problem with that lineup is it feels like you’d have to get lucky to get a stop. Hence the need for Herb. Actually seemed like our best strategy was to get Penn in a hurry. Give them a good-ish shot quickly before they get settled down and in rhythm.

Don't really have anything to add outside of what's all been said. Herb being out means we have no decent on ball defenders. Turnovers are going to be an issue because they're still adjusting to the new offense and we really don't have any great ball handlers that can drive in traffic.

Honestly not upset about the loss because Penn beat quality teams on the road last year. Team has a lot of work to do. It's a fresh breath of new air watching an actual offense and guys giving max effort. Sky isn't falling.

Props to Penn. They disected our defense beautifully. Also, people keep talking about their big man, but their freshman, Dingle, ate our guards’ lunch. He was the star last night. He’s going to be a stud and with that ripped frame (like how is he a freshman) and 6’3” height, he has next level potential. Certain people on this board should take note that it’s not only a recruit’s star rating out of high school that matters. That kid can play.

Reese is both physically challenged defensively and seems to struggle to understand/implement help and rotation.

It's a really really really bad combo.

Reese is "slow-footed"....he's always been and always will be. It took a horrible misjudgment of talent to have offered the kid a major D-1 scholarship....that's on Johnson.

A little too much hand-wringing over this game it sounds like. Penn is a quality ball team, and Alabama despite many mistakes and looking out of sorts on defense lost by 1 point in a game they should've won at the end with either just one defensive stop or free throws.
