Not really. Recruiting is important but by no means the end all of CBB. Plenty of coaches regularly find success through superior talent evaluation + development.

Talent evaluation is recruiting...we aren’t talking like it’s just star gazing.

I refuse to believe Hawkins could possibly be worse than Galin Smith. If he is, Oats would have never offered him to come to Bama. He has to have a legit reason for holding him out after watching Smith go full retard all season. He’s either saving him for next season or telling him to find the portal.

Mikal Bridges who was a top 10 pick in the NBA draft two years ago redshirted.
Obi Toppin who is projected to be a top 10 pick in the NBA draft redshirted.
Those are just two off the top of my head.
Redshirting isn't the kiss of death, especially when we only play one big a lot of the time and already have three who split minutes.

Bruce Pearl won 9 total SEC games his first two years, I assume some bandwagon Auburn bball fans were down on him.
Seems to have turned things around just fine.

What Pearl inherited and what Oats inherited are polar opposites. Not even close to being comparable.

Gene, Nate does have a headwind I have no experience with and I’m not sure how to quantify it. Never in my lifetime has Auburn enjoyed this sustained level of success in basketball. They’ve had a couple years here and there but never what they’ve got now. And it was usually followed by a visit from the NCAA. Not throwing shade, just stating facts.
Alabama has never been a basketball power but we owned the gym in state and pretty much always have. Auburn having more success than Bama right now creates additional problems for Nate he doesn’t need and he needs to start making inroads pretty quickly because it wouldn’t take sustained success for very long to shift the balance of power to the east.

Most of what Oats inherited is injured, Those who arent inured are worn down because of the injuries.
Posted on 2/4/20 at 9:44 pm to CrimsonFever
And it’s still not even close to being comparable. Bruce has made one of, if not the worst, power five jobs in the country and turned them into a basketball school. I hope Oats has 3/4th of the success Pearl has because he’s been incredible.

They had fans year one and two blaming Pearl for their losing and it was about as ridiculous as you blaming Oats tonight.
Rick Barnes inherited Admiral Schofeld and Grant Williams and had a losing record through his first two season at Tennessee. Calm down, give Oats more than one injury riddled year before you start acting like he cant coach.

Hate that for Hawkins . He was so happy to be here . Those quotes kinda make me sad . I remember Levi Randolph being a terrible shooter early in his career but developed into a scorer his last year so I am not ready to write Forbes off yet either

I guess you could hope we land Primo and grad transfer and the bring in a really solid 2021 class.
Yeah, something like that. I agree with you that this roster needs to be purged ASAP, but I just don't see us having a ton of success with grad transfers. At least as a primary means of becoming a less bad team.

I would defend Petty a bit. It's clear that he's on edge mentally but, man, he was all over the court making winning plays tonight. Think he had 11 rebounds, around 8 assists and a few steals and came away some clutch 50-50 balls.
His issue seems to be getting open looks on offense and some of that is he's the only player consistently finding open 3 point shooters off the dribble. Going forward, Petty likely needs to move more but Oats may need to find a way for some players to kick to Petty for open threes as that's just not happening. Every 3 he takes recently seems to be him creating it for himself off the dribble.
I'm also not crazy about how we run the offense more through Kira down the stretch. Think he's much more effective when another player drives and passes to him with the defense already moving.
We're extremely stagnant when the offense is just putting it in Kira's hands down the stretch. I would be happier with a lot less "conservative" approach, conventional wisdom be damned and kicking a lot more for volume 3 point shots like we do early in games and 2nd halves.

You just throw shite against the wall
Where have I said he can’t coach? I said the team showed no effort and toughness tonight. I said that’s on him. Good lord

I’ve got another example for you, Will Wade had Skylar Mays and Tremont Waters and won two Sec games his first year.

Is Kira better suited at 2? I wonder with Quinerly next year if they'll slide him.
Posted on 2/4/20 at 10:31 pm to Gary Busey
One thing Quinerly has that Kira doesn’t is great passing ability.
There aren’t many college PGs faster than Kira on a fast break with the ball in his hands though.

Pretty sure Kira and his mom have their sights set on leaving after this year. I don’t think he’s good enough for the NBA yet but I guess he might take a chance and go the G-league route

Well Fever, those reshirts didn't play for Bama. Name some that did and later were bid contributors. There may be some but that number will be very small.
Hawkins may turn out to be great but he was a mid major signee
at best. not blaming Oats because he had such a short time to recruit but it is still true he will have to recruit much better if he is to be successful here.
I sincerely hope he is the best we have ever had but I hoped the same for Grant. Never was sokd on Avery but I supported him ubtil it was clear he was not the man.
