Man he's getting better every game. His confidence is rising and I love it for him

I remember countless games where he would make the first one and then do nothing for the next 45 minutes besides shoot 3s, of which he would make 2 and miss 11
Nothing united a Philips Arena crowd like screaming NOOOOO at Josh when he caught a pass in the corner.
Listening to Steve Holman get angry at Josh on radio is still one of my favorite things ever.

Don’t get me wrong, because I was there with y’all, but part of me wonders if he’d be getting the same response today in the analytics era.
I mean I still cringe at Bembry shooting threes, but it’s what they’re encouraged to do these days so I don’t complain about it as much.
Maybe Josh Smith was more in tune with the analytics before it became popular. Maybe instead of Steph Curry, it was actually Josh Smith that revolutionized the game

Herb hardly ever even tries a 3. He will play in the nba, some day. Herb is the least of our problems. I suspect that Oats would play him every minute of every game if he didnt tire out. Same with Petty and Kira.
If Kira gets hurt, we can just call in the dogs and piss on the fire, cause the hunt is over. Beetle is a fricking disaster at point guard.

He hasn't the last few games but he was earlier while he figured out how to play in the system

Goodness, they lost at home to Florida A&M.

They really only have 1 bad loss, but their OOC was tough and that league is unforgiving. 6 of their 9 losses are to teams in the Top 30.
Losses
#1 Kansas
#5 Baylor
#11 Seton Hall
#14 Iowa
#25 Texas Tech
#29 Michigan
#60 TCU
#71 Oregon State
#297 Florida A&M (not good Bob)

I think so just because of how bad of a 3pt shooter he was. He only made 28% of them in his career. It doesn't take peak efficiency on 2 point shots to be more effective than that operating exclusively inside. Especially for a guy like him who had a solid inside game.

ESPN BPI has us at 80.5% against Kansas State.

Yea - pretty sure the analytics would identify him as a "Dunk Only" guy and not a "3 Point Shooter" guy.
Everybody loves shooting 3's but we don't have Galin out there chucking them up. There is still some level of individual "can you actually make shots?" that goes into it.

Yeah to me the gray area is like 31-34%. If you're in there as a 3pt shooter then you should probably be a layup and dunk guy unless it's wide open. Less than that and you need to be a nothing outside of 5 feet guy. More than that and you can be bombs away all day every day.

Also - there are guys who are good 3 PT shooters when wide open and in rythm who struggle on catch and shoot or with guys around them. Those guys may average out to 31%, but the advanced look tells you they shoot 40% when open and with time and 20% when crowded.
Those guys are pretty clearly "if they leave you open" guys.
Herb, from my naked eye, doesn't seem to shoot it all that well even when left wide open (which is mainly all he shoots, really).

Any update on Davis?

Nate Oats said #Alabama is still waiting for the results on Javian Davis' MRI on his injured right knee. "My guess would be he's questionable for this weekend based on the MRI. But he's actually walking. He's not even on crutches this morning. So, I don't think it's that bad."

Great news, if they're right.

That would be great news. We need his rebounding, I think he got 7 rebounds in the less than 15 minutes he played last night.

Thank God.... I hope Oats is right with his assumptions
