Tight Ends

Sorry, no pics. But lets talk about the Tight End depth chart and the expected roles this upcoming season. There has been a lot of chatter about using TEs more. We have definitely recruited a bunch of them. We saw them used a lot last year in several different roles.
Roster:
Josh Ford
Danny Lewis
Kaleb Edwards
Marshall Pritchett
Mack Sutter
Jay Lindsey
Jack Sammarco
What do we know about these guys? Not a lot of games played in this group, but there is some size. Danny Lewis is still around and maybe he can get healthy. He has always been a solid blocker and has the most time in our program, by far. But what is his injury status? Josh Ford has gotten high praise from spring camp. I think he is more of an unsung hero type. Not somebody I expect to be featured in the passing game but will probably be moved all over the formation and expected to win assignments. Edwards has great size and made some plays last year. But he needs to be bigger, stronger, meaner.
Mack Sutter is a guy i have my eye on. I havent heard anything on him yet but he has great size and pedigree. Not sure if a freshman can crack this rotation but he might be a dude in the future. Who else am I missing? Didnt we bring in a half dozen walk-ons? Any diamonds in the rough?
What are yall's thoughts on this position? NFL offenses are using more and more 2TE sets. I dont know if we have NFL talent there, but we might. Cuevas was a difference maker last year. Somebody needs to step up and get some of those targets. Who is it gonna be?

My guess:
Y - Edwards / Pritchett
H-B - Ford / Lewis
After that I do not know but we have a lot of options.
The Y position is basically a pass catcher in this offense. They’ll concede some power at the point of attack to have a TE that can make plays underneath all the deep routes the WRs are running.
I think some of our running game issues were due to losing Robbie Ouzts and not being able to keep Lewis on the field at H-B. That’s why Ford was an immediate target for the staff, signing him during the playoffs.

The TE takeover of the offense is almost complete. Only need one more to field 11 TEs at once.

We might need some extra help pass blocking too. Whoever is the best blocker in the group will get a lot of PT.

One of the best pass catching TEs we have ever had. Seemed like he was really good at getting YAC. To me he looked like a much better player than OJ Howard but the NFL draft didnt agree.

Hard agree, OJ just was a such a prototype TE physically that the NFL was willing to overlook how stiff he was in routes.
Guy's best plays in college were ones where the defense forgot about him, because he never was a consistent threat
Cuevas seems to be the opposite, a tweener that doesn't stand out physically, but was always getting open and making tough catches.

OJ's bigger problem was his mentality. He was baby soft his whole career. A finesse WR in a TE body. There have been plenty of WRs and TEs who were really good despite being mediocre route runners because they were big, strong, and mean and consistently came down with 50/50 balls and catches in traffic. I can't recall many of those from him. If he ever did it.
