A little off topic but this is the crowd that may be able to help. Have any of you guys ever coached youth basketball? We're starting a 4th grade team and it looks like I may end up coaching. It's associated with the school system so we'll be teaching the concepts they use at the high school, which are very similar to what Oats does.
Saving for later. Will help u out bro.

Slater talking to his own burner account? Hmmmm. Either we have a legit shot or it's already a done deal with one of the other two.

My guess is Indiana is the one with the much better odds.

quote:Very helpful, thanks. I've found some pretty good pivot drills online, so we're going to be doing a lot of those, layup drills, defensive drills, ball handling drills, and free throws. Gotta figure out how to make it fun, so I like the idea of a free throw competition each week.
I coached both boys and girls high school and junior high basketball. I have coached in final fours. I took over a junior high program where girls were not considered important. At the height of the program I had 128 kids playing basketball both boys and girls in a school of about 175 kids in K-6.

4. During my 45 minutes of practice, we worked on nothing but ball handling, passing, catching, how to run and catch and run and dribble with both hands, and for five minutes, we went over the rules and theory of the game.
Exactly the approach I used and would love to have my kids play for a coach that works this way. The kids must learn the importance of footwork, ballhandling, and being able to pass well.

Ball Handling
1. Full-Court Zig Zag Dribbling. Make Sure everybody is looking up
Corner--> Closest Elbow Free throw line----> Half Court Corner----->Other Closest Elbow Free Throw Line---->Corner [/i]
Make Sure they plant their foot with the same hand they are dribbling with. If they are dribbling with their left hand, the Left foot should be planted when changing direction. Make sure they are switching the ball to the other hand when doing the crossover. The ball should be dribbled away from the defense.(outside hand)
2. Start at Baseline and go full Court
Right Hand Down, Left Hand back. Have the kids put the off hand behind their back. Make sure they are looking up. You can also have the kids dribble with 2 basketball at once.
3. Dribble In place. Left hand and then switch with right hand. I will stand in front of a player with a tennis ball and have them catch it with their off hand. This keeps them looking up. Helps with Hand Eye coord
Passing Drills
Should Cover All Passing Drills
Shooting
1. Have The Kids Start at the block and shoot off the backboard. Make sure to use Left and right block. Teach them the proper way to shoot. Set your feet, Elbow tucked in. Little space under the ball in your hand. Follow Through. Don't worry about if they make it or not. They need to have good mechanics and make sure they aren't shooting 2 handed.
2. Lay Up Drill
Start doing this drill walking. Teach them which hand should have the ball and which foot to jump off of. Do this on both sides.
3. Teach Them Triple Threat. Also teach them how to pivot with this.

Inbound Under Basket
Make sure the kids have fun and try to make sure the kids don't develop bad habits.

Hey Pio go ahead and predict we finish dead last in the SEC. No reason. Thanks.
Posted on 10/5/23 at 1:17 am to RollTide33
I'll be honest. This is probably the toughest stretch of sec basketball in many years. Regardless of fan affiliation, I feel like if you finish in the top 5 in the SEC, you will make Sweet 16 or better.
