That's the side of the portal that all the athlete empowerment types don't really like to talk about. For every kid like Mark Sears or Ricky Council who was undervalued as a recruit, plays really well at a mid-major, and turns that into a key role at a better program there are a couple dozen who sit at the end of the bench at a mid-major for a couple of years, go into the portal because they think they should play more minutes, and never find another school. There's nothing empowering about that.

I may have to try and dig it up but basically a good chunk of kids that enter the portal, never even get a degree. So not only is your playing career potentially finished when entering the portal but starting your post basketball career with a hand tied behind your back.

Four-star center Jesse McCulloch helped his Lutheran East team to a state title win over the weekend. Two of the first people to reach out following the victory were Alabama head coach Nate Oats and assistant Bryan Hodgson.

“Him and Coach Oats talk to me a lot, actually,” McCulloch said. “We won state last night and I heard from both of them.”

The Tide is on a March Madness run of its own with San Diego State awaiting in the Sweet 16.

“They’re playing great right now,” McCulloch said. “I like watching them. I see that they’re doing well, too. They’re just doing really good in the tournament.”

The Ohio native took an unofficial visit to Alabama last month.

“It was great,” he reflected on the visit. “The campus is not too far. The atmosphere is crazy. The people are all really kind. The coaching staff is just amazing.”

Nate Oats sees one of his current freshmen in the 6-foot-9, 190-pound McCulloch.

“He was showing me how he could use me,” McCulloch said. “How I play, he compared me to Noah (Clowney). He’s just a really good coach.”

Will McCulloch return for an official visit?

“I’m thinking about it right now,” he said. “We’re going to have a timeframe for me and my family. We plan on making a decision soon, like beginning of AAU. But if it comes up to it, I love going down there. I’d do it.

“I’m planning on dropping a top five or a top three soon. I’m still talking to my family about it.”

Why is the Crimson Tide heavily in play along with schools like Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State, and Xavier?

“I like the way they play,” he said. “I love the coaching staff. They contact me a lot. They come down here a lot, which means a lot to me and my family.”

As for McCulloch’s personal March Madness bracket …

“I see Alabama going far and Houston going far,” he predicted.

In-state small forward Chase McCarty says he’s been hearing plenty from the Alabama staff, including as recently as this past week. The Huntsville (Ala.) Westminster Christian Academy product has taken unofficial visits to the Capstone as well.

“Really just the home feel,” McCarty told BamaOnLine of what he likes about the program. “It’s like an hour-thirty for me, so it feels like I’m right at home. The campus is amazing. The people are real friendly. Obviously a great basketball program, a great coaching staff. They’ve come down and watched my games. So I really feel the love from Alabama.”

McCarty has been keeping up with Alabama hoops as the Tide makes its NCAA Tournament run.

“It’s great. It’s amazing,” he said. “Representing for the state of Alabama. Also, I had them winning in my bracket, so I need them to pull it out.”

In his conversations with Nate Oats, McCarty feels as though UA is making him a priority.

“He’s obviously told me that he really wants me there,” McCarty said. “I’m one of their favorites recruits in the 2024 class. They talk about my play style and it translates directly to theirs, you know, fast-paced, shoot a lot of threes, big guard.”

McCarty says he would consider an official visit to Alabama in the future. He’s already taken a pair of OVs to Houston and Ole Miss.

He added he’s spoken to Mark Sears, an Alabama native, a couple times as well.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound McCarty is rated the No. 44 small forward and the No. 171 overall player in the class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

There are no favorites to date for McCarty but Bama has established itself firmly in the mix.

Notre Dame guard Cormac Ryan will enter the NBA Draft while putting his name in the portal.

Ryan has spent the last 3 seasons at Notre Dame after spending his freshman year at Stanford.

Had a solid senior year for the Irish, averaging 12.3PPG,4RPG and 2.5APG this season.

Hated this guy last year.

Would love to get him. Need bigger scoring guards that can go to work in March. He fits the bill.

We actually have bigger guards in freshmen Rylan Griffen and Davin Cosby. both 6'5 and Nimari Burnett is a soph at 6'4'

As bad as we shot there's been times I wish Coach had sent in Delaney Heard, yeah he's a walk on but he has game and can really shoot.

FIU transfer Denver Jones

Hopefully, he could score like he did at FIU, but he's only 6'4" and his turnover numbers are really bad. For those that got frustrated by JD's carelessness with the ball, you won't like Denver. JD's averaged 4.8 assist and 2.9 turnovers a game. Denver averages 2 assist and 3.2 turnovers a game. For shooting guard comparison, Shack averaged 1.5 assist and 2.0 turnovers a game.

"Only 6'4"? What? Lol. That's just fine for a shooting guard.

I agree that assist-to-turnover ratio could be better. Size isn't an issue here, though.

We need someone who can consistently fill it up from 3-point range more than anything, IMO. I realize we thought we were getting that with Welch and that didn't work out. We need someone to be able to be consistent, though. IMO, our inconsistency shooting has been our biggest issue in our two Sweet 16 teams the past three years.

Considering we're going to have Sears (says 6'1" but probably shorter) and Bradley (6'3") out there, yes, it would be better to have someone 6'6" or above. Our scoring guard for most of this season was 6'9". And yes, Miller was basically our scoring guard this season despite being listed as a forward.

And as a side note, we better be finding a trustworthy point guard in the portal. Sears is not going to be the kind of point guard we need for our offense. He struggles getting past on ball defenders with both hands and his height hurts his ability to finish at the rim. And Bradley hasn't shown the consistency with the ball we need or the outside shooting.

I know it's always a risk, but our portal evals have to improve. Sears isn't a great fit and Burnett and Welch haven't been consistently effective.
