I think he started because his family won't be able to attend the next two games in Paris.
Rylan is extremely gifted shoot it showed this first game so hopefully it continues because he has the potential to be a really good Freshman and by having a good summer could build his confidence even more for the upcoming season.

Seems like most analysts slept on him a little bit.
He was still a top 50 recruit everywhere besides Rivals. I think expectations for freshmen have shifted a lot in the last few years with the way this staff has recruited. A top 50 recruit should come in and at least compete for minutes as a freshman. If he doesn't then it was probably a misevaluation.
To clarify, I'm not saying he's a bust if he doesn't play much this year. I do expect him to perform well in practice and not look out of place when he does get on the court. At most programs a top 50 recruit is going to be a major part of the rotation from day 1. We just have more talent than most programs, so that doesn't necessarily apply to us.

What day is it in Spain, Friday? Septober? Dectebuary?

That’s an old graphic I think. Looks like it changed. Second game is the 11th

Yeah, I thought the last two games were in Paris.

Well, he started this game. I know it's a "find out what we've got" game, but I think it's safe to say he'll be playing a lot.
Based on the post-game interview, he might have started because this was the only game his parents could make on the trip. Regardless, he seems more ready for playing time than I expected.
I think the biggest surprise is Clowney. I had already penciled him in as getting the KAH treatment this year. It seems likely that he'll be in the main rotation at worst.

Yeah, Clowney seems to be positioning himself for minutes as a defensive role player at the very least. Oats was hyping him up in that regard, and from what I have seen/read about his performance so far it wasn't just Nate being Nate.
Regardless of minutes allocation, it seems like all of our freshmen came in with the right attitude for playing early. So worst case scenario we'll have a couple of guys on the end of the bench who will be mentally ready if their numbers get called.

Kool-Aid McKinstry, speaking Tuesday to reporters for the first time since arriving at Alabama last year, says he won't be playing basketball at Alabama. He did practice with the basketball team at one point as a freshman.

Kool-Aid is too busy competing in a position battle. And I'm sure he realized pretty quick that while he's good, he's not Power 5 level good.
Honestly, if your talent is equal between both sports, you'd be foolish to choose a football career over a basketball career. Basketball players get paid way more and have longer careers. Plus, there's significantly fewer injuries that follow you for life.
Charlie Ward knew what was up, and that was before NBA salaries became insane.

Noah Clowney highlights from our open practice scrimmage
Damn...I know it's just a scrimmage but he looks really good. Time to buy low on the Clowney hype train. Tickets are $1 right now but may be $100 when December rolls around.

Guess I didn’t watch enough of his highlight videos when we recruited him but his form looks really nice.

Yeah. 6'10 and can shoot like that? He can't stay on the bench very long. Wow.

Gawd DAYM
Those weren't "oh look the big guy made some shots in an open gym" looks either. That was full speed in the offense stuff.
He moves like a damn 6'6 guy.

You can't play high level basketball and football anymore. There will be 1-2 exceptions a year in CBB, maybe, but none of them will be elite in either sport.
Baseball/Football remains the only semi-feasible crossover sport situation (not including track).

EVALUATED 11/01/2021
Jerry Meyer
DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL SCOUTING
PROJECTION
Second Round
Is thin but has the frame to put on weight. Is a long 6-9/6-10. Moves his feet well and has good hands. Is a mobile and good athlete who is developing the strength to make more plays in traffic. Has three-point shooting range and can finish post moves with either hand. Has a go-to move in the post with his right hand jump hook. Catches well on the move. Built for pick and pop and pick and roll situations. Not a big ball handler but can attack the basket with a couple dribbles. Has a quick first step/dribble. Not a creative passer but has the awareness to make the proper read. Can defend the basket but needs to get stronger to control space down low. Has the lateral quickness to defend ball screen situations. Will go and get a rebound, but can be out muscled. Has a ton of upside. Strength gain is the key.

Obviously adding muscle and strength isn't a given for all players, but that reads like the evaluation of a borderline 5*. Not really sure how Meyer can see that much potential in him and 247 still has him ranked relatively low.

Looks like he didn't really play on the big time summer circuit (his AAU team isn't one of the elite ones and I don't think he went to any of the big national things). So, might just be a "we set a ceiling on guys we don't see compete enough against the other best players" thing, which I kind of get.

I suppose that makes some sense. Not that recruiting rankings really mean much. You can either play or you can't, and it looks like he can.
