I wonder how that 2021 season ends if Bruners knees didn’t quit
Posted on 7/23/22 at 7:21 pm to mistaken4193
I always think about that! Bruner was starting to play really good right when his knees quit on him!

They also have similar personalities. Bruce's manifests itself more in a self-promoting used car salesman kind of way and Oats' manifests itself in a brash, shite talking a-hole kind of way, but they are more alike than a lot of either school's fans would want to admit.
And its not just them, you can find so many similarities between most great coaches, even across different sports.

He was a beast in that Auburn game and was having another great game vs Kentucky when he got hurt

ESPN 100 guard Freddie Dilione, who cut his list to 10 earlier today, will take visits to Wake Forest and Alabama this week, he tells ESPN. Demon Deacons and Crimson Tide get early shots at a July breakout star and one of the elite scorers in the 2023 class.

Dilione looks really good. If the ones we've been mentioned with that is left, I like him the best.

Very nice, long preview on The Athletic by Seth Davis. Clearly had a long conversation with Oats.

Not feeling great about Burnett apparently still not trusting his knee or the staff apparently having no idea what kind of player Pringle is considering they gave him a scholarship.
The stuff about Sears killing it in practice and Miller hitting the ground running is encouraging though. Gonna need both of them to play at a high level if we want to do anything this year.

You can read the article on the website. It threw up a subscription request the first time I clicked it but I went back again and it just had an ad on the bottom half of the page.
Oats said Burnett shows a little hesitation going to the rim.
Bediako gained 20 pounds since end of season.
Wants to get JQ back for some nonconference games.
Expects better defense because of having better size.

Two big takeaways from that article that haven't been mentioned...
This comforts me as I had hoped he'd be the long wing to fill the Herb role at the four spot. I'm also more of a fan of having a long wing at the 4 than a traditional 4 like Gurley.
I am not sure of whether this is something that Davis or Oats is projecting. This article has so many Oats quotes, including a paragraph later where he shows how bullish he is on Miller and Bradley, that it's hard to separate what is Oats's thoughts versus Davis's analysis. I'm huge on Bradley, so I'm not surprised he's pushing for a starting spot, but if both he and Miller are ready for starting minutes right out of the gate then we should be pretty thrilled with the outlook for this season.
Having said that, if that is what Oats was leading him to believe, it does make you wonder how much of a worry Burnett's knee is. He said he wants to get longer, but if we run a starting lineup with Sears, Bradley, and Burnett, then we aren't exactly that much longer than last year.
quote:
Oats hopes Miller will give his team a dynamic presence at the four that Herb Jones and Jeremy Harris did at Alabama and Buffalo, respectively. “We’ve always had a good, long, athletic wing that’s a mismatch nightmare,” he says.

Bradley and Miller are two of the highest-rated recruits in program history. Heading into the season, they are not only projected starters, but they will be called upon to carry a heavy load out of the gate.

Nimari has to get games under his belt in order for him to get extremely comfortable with his knee.
Coach Oats and company knows exactly what they are getting in Nick Pringle.
Nick Pringle's game is very similar to Donta Hall & Freshman Juwan Gary's play style...if that makes sense.

The former more than the latter I believe. Oats said Pringle is very athletic but needs to work on his skills. Gary was a dog more than he was very athletic for a D1 basketball player. Donta Hall was a freak athlete bc he could jump so damn high he would block shots and make incredible dunks.
I like both. But given the choice I'll take the guy who can fly.

quote:
Nick Pringle, a 6-9 forward from Dodge City Community College, will serve as Bediako’s backup. He got to campus later than the others because he was still finishing up his schoolwork, so Oats has only recently gotten his first extended look at him. “He had some good games in junior college, but he wasn’t great in every game,” Oats says. “He’s super athletic, but I need to see how skilled he is. Then the question is how quickly he’s going to pick everything up.”
As previously addressed, it's difficult to separate where Davis repeats what Oats told him without putting it in quotes from where he injects his own analysis and opinion, but this makes it sound like they offered him because he's tall and athletic but haven't really seen a ton of him, and that's the extent of what they know about him. I suppose Oats could mean that Pringle's JuCo didn't ask him to do much with the ball besides grab rebounds and dunk, but I'm not really sure why we would either. Maybe they are hoping his shooting mechanics are good enough to be worth bothering with.
