If there's a player that wants to come here like you guys describe -- accepts that they'll likely have to fight for pretty limited minutes but could help in a pinch -- then there's no reason to not bring them in.

Are there a lot of those type guys out there though?

Guess it may be a last minute deal since their first choices are likely moving to better teams where they stand a good chance to play a lot or just returning to their current team.

That said, it would be nice to add someone but maybe I'm the idiot for not being all that concerned about it. Perhaps it's just that last years team seemed to have the problem of a deep bench/rotation but not one that changed the outcome of games much.

No, I think you'd need to do lots of due diligence to make sure that last guy is a glue guy that embraces the role.

We played a lot of guys, but I wouldn't say we had a deep bench. We just had a lot of flawed players who happened to have the same flaws at the same positions, so we were consistently trying to find something that worked.

It certain wasn't an ideal scenario, but I think that was more due to roster flaws than trying to get all the guys minutes.

Bingo. The amount of players getting minutes was definitely not due to the quality of the depth. Hopefully that changes this year.

I remember being mentioned with a couple of D2 guys with good stats and an end of the bench HM transfer. While those type of players aren't ideal, it is better to add someone at this point. I don't think we need another expected contributor. We simply need a reserve that can be counted on for spot minutes if injuries arise.

And as SOG mentioned, Nate was just throwing players out there last year to see if they'd stick. Had nothing to do with being too deep.

Agreed

And getting Welch locked up is helpful because you can focus on that last spot without worrying about missing on the Welch spot and thinking about 2 spots and you do all that.

You guys are right about the problem last year being ill-fitted pieces more than simply lack of minutes and probably know a ton more than me about recruiting/available transfers.

It just strikes me as so much more difficult to recruit a decent transfer who's main role is "insurance if injuries happen" than a top notch player you sell on being a major contributor on a Top 25 team.

Oh I agree, it's not easy at all. It is threading a very thin needle.

Timme back to Gonzaga doesn’t scare me that much. Good opportunity for Bediako to improve and the rest of their team should fall off from their last two seasons. Still like our chances in Birmingham.

Houston is terrifying, If they can stay healthy they’re final four/championship level good off the rip

I don't understand how entire seasons and schedules can be changed in a moments notice due to Covid but moving the tournament back one day is apparently not a quick fix.

Boise State transfer Emmanuel Akot talks transfer process, nearing decision

Boise State transfer Emmanuel Akot is closing in on his college decision. The 6-foot-8 senior who withdrew from the NBA draft averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists this season and did not mention which schools are currently involved in his recruitment.

“I’m probably going to make a decision pretty soon,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I know where I want to go but I know the schools I’m talking to. It’s just me seeing who I want to take that leap of faith with. It’s my last year so I’m just being a little patient.”

“Throughout this process schools have been telling me they like my experience, and how I’m a tall play maker who can defend, play multiple positions and who will bring versatility to the team.”

With a decision expected in the near future, Akot knows what he brings and some things that are important in making his final decision.

“There are a lot of factors that I don’t want to get into too much detail about but obviously winning is important to me. I want to be somewhere where I’m comfortable and in a great environment.”

“I think I bring experience, defense, shooting, I think I can do everything pretty well so a versatility that a lot of guys in the country don’t bring.”

I'd assume it has to do with TV contracts. If the alternative to being flexible with COVID issues is no games at all, they'll be flexible. If playing the championship on Sunday vs. Saturday will potentially hurt revenue, it becomes a bigger problem.
