It could also help him that we have had all this roster turnover. His buddies are mostly all gone. Time to get to work.
This is kind of what i'm hoping for. I think him and Shack were almost BFF's.

Did anything ever become of the football guys who were supposed to practice with basketball? I don't think anything ever materialized with that. McKinstry and Arnold, iirc.
I had forgotten about them. I guess if we don't fill those other two scholarships then those guys could be 2 bodies that maybe just wouldn't be terrible although I doubt either ever step foot on the court.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the physical level of last seasons team.
I wasn't either tbh. Btw, has anyone heard anything about the S&C job we have open? Has there been a single name associated with the opening? I haven't seen one yet.

I could be wrong, but I wouldn't bank on ever seeing them hit the floor.

Alabama transfer Alex Tchikou taking visit to Big 12 power Kansas State
Former Alabama big man Alex Tchikou has been on a tour around the country looking for his next home. The Paris native elected to enter the transfer portal after the Crimson Tide lost to Notre Dame. And according to a recent report, courtesy of Travis Branham of 247sports, Tchikou is currently in Manhattan, Kansas, on a visit with Big 12 power Kansas State Wildcats.
The highly-coveted big man has been one of the most sought-after prospects in the transfer portal this offseason. Tchikou has been contacted by Florida State, Xavier, USC, Washington, Arizona State, Georgetown, Wake Forest, Cincinnati, Cal, Ole Miss, Memphis, UCSB, Tennessee State and Georgia Tech, among others. And as of Friday, Kansas State can be added to the list.
The former four-star prospect from Paris was rated as the No. 94 prospect in the country for in the 2019 class, per the On3 Consensus.

It would be nice if Alabama had any actual basketball coverage, because I'm curious to hear the back story on how Tchikou ended up being so much of a bust that he couldn't even get minutes over the walk-ons last season. Obviously it was a combination of ability, recovering from the injury, and character/maturity, but I'd like to know to what extent each of those played a role.

I don't know if this is actually the case or not, but I think the staff knew early on that he wasn't going to be on the roster after the season ended (whether he told them or it was a decision the staff made for him) and decided it was in his and our best interest to not even play him to avoid another injury.

I just am worried about the roster. We need to fill these last 2 spots with experience. If not we are gonna be playing the non-conference schedule with 10 scholarship players…
4 True Freshman
1 JUCO kid
1 Mid Major kid who hasn’t played at this level
1 kid coming off a torn ACL
1 7ft center who isn’t a threat to shoot
1 kid (Darius Miles) who is a goofball
1 transfer who was a disappointment his first year here.
Talented group but It’s a lot of uncertainty to go against a really tough OOC schedule. I was banking on us adding 2 solid players with experience.
why was this repeatedly downvoted? Seems pretty rational to me. I have worries too for these same reasons.
If those things don't worry you, they should.

I think that probably is what happened considering he essentially did not play at all for a team that spent the entire season desperately searching for answers to the point that we played walk-ons in the first half of a conference game. I'm just curious about what led to that decision being made in the first place. Because it's not like he was some fringe P-6 recruit like Raymond Hawkins they took a shot in the dark on. Tchikou had offers from a ton of big time programs.

I don’t totally understand why transfer portal guys would be worried about our roster. I guess the argument is the pure numbers we have, because otherwise I don’t totally get it.
The exception is at PG. if you’re a PG, you might look at our roster and think nah, I’ll go somewhere else (especially with Quinerly coming back at some point). Otherwise, I just don’t see what would scare guys off.
If you’re a high level wing, you really worried about Rylan Griffen? Darius Miles? Nimari Burnett, who hasn’t played in almost two years? And our bigs are even less scary.
(I don’t think we have a bad roster, but it’s pretty unproven, and it’s not just obviously stacked beyond belief).
Maybe the problem is that we’re not really in on the top top guys - the guys who wouldn’t care what our backup wing situation is. Or maybe this particular rationale is all overblown to begin with.

Yea, not a real poll. Just an opinion piece.
As another poster said, top 5 probably. But they won't start the season #1 in the real polls.

Yeah Rushball said the exact same thing a couple posts up. This was my response a couple post up: Yeah I’d have UNC personally, Arky top 3-5 fasho tho like Chad said.

My guess would be that it had something to do with that 3v3 tournament he played in over the summer without the staff’s knowledge when he wasn’t even medically cleared.

I think it may be. Oats really can’t say that competitor schools are way overpaying NIL deals right now. That’s the more likely scenario than competition at the position. Auburn apparently thought they had easily beat the G league’s $800K offer to a recruit who then signed with Tennessee. What was the NIL deal at Tennessee? I know we and most of the SEC have collectives that can provide a nice base income for all players on the team, with the Bryce Youngs getting larger deals on their own, but how much are we supposed to pay for back up players when supposedly you can’t pay for play? Talk about inflation!

No idea if it's actually true, but the rumors on Twitter were along the lines of AU was offering in the ballpark of $1M and UT got him with something in the ballpark of $2M.
Sounds totally preposterous to me, but who knows.

I'd hope we get Ark/Ken/Tenn/Aub home games this year. I guess that's doubtful after having them all last year.
Posted on 5/14/22 at 4:38 pm to McGregor
Are you talking about the ticket packages? We play Auburn at home every year as well as away. Had Kentucky both home and away this past year. Tennessee and Arkansas will be away for sure, but we could also play them twice as well who knows. On a side note that new Vandy logo is disgustingly bad

College basketball transfer portal: Examining what the portal gameplan for each Power 6 team really means
There is not a one-size-fits-all approach for the transfer portal. Every coaching staff heads into the offseason with a plan in place. Part of that comes after some self-reflection.
You have to know the strengths and weaknesses of your roster. You have to take a look at the high school recruiting and what type of players are coming in. You also have to consider the connections that the staff has to players currently in the portal or who could be on the move very soon.
But the good programs are not afraid to completely ditch the original plan in the ever-changing portal. It’s never been easier to land talented, proven pieces. But they have to fit the culture that has been created. Their goals have to align with the coaching staff or friction is easy to envision.
Let’s dive into how each Power 6 team has attacked the transfer portal and what it says about the gameplan for both now and the future.
quote:
Alabama: Nate Oats is not going to reinvent the wheel. Even though the Crimson Tide did not live up to the hype in 2021-22, he’s going to keep doing his thing. Alabama lost talented guards like Jaden Shackelford, Keon Ellis and JD Davison, so Oats replaced them with talented freshmen and Ohio transfer Mark Sears. Alabama’s three-headed monster at guard next year will feature Nimari Burnett, Jahvon Quinerly, Sears and freshman Jaden Bradley. Stockpiling super talented guards is just the way Oats likes it.

Who wants to guess the date of our next commitment? I assume the absolute last enrollment deadline would be early August.
