Kyle Neptune from Fordham is going to be his successor, so I guess this had been going on behind the scenes for a minute?

Geez. Retiring at 60 coming off a Final Four is wild. I hope he's OK health-wise and this was just something he had been contemplating for a while.

Alabama is the latest offer for 2024 Chase McCarty of Westminster Christian & Atlanta Xpress, joining Houston and Cincinnati as the programs to extend early offers so far. Smart move by the Bama staff to get ahead on an in-state prospect.

Wonder what will happen with Nova's class? Would love to get Cam Whitmore.

We have a top 5 ranked incoming class so I don’t think NIL has slowed us down at all. I would also think whatever our football program does would be athletic department wide.

I think that class was pretty well solidified during the anticipation phase of the NIL process, rather than the reality of a maturing NIL world. And the comment about the football process is what I was referring to, they are trying to make things equal. I get why we are doing it, but making things equal across players and sports would almost certainly take us out of the conversation for the very top Bball commits as they’d be able to get materially more elsewhere (see posts on KY’s $2mm man).

I applaud him. He's made a lot of money and was very successful at what he did. He can now spend time with his family knowing they'll be financially set.

Almost every program puts football first. I have more faith in our athletic department, compared to most D1 schools, to put together an adequate plan that will continue to evolve as the NIL rules evolve.

There will always be some schools that put basketball first but that's not as big of a disadvantage when you realize most other big programs are in the same situation we're in.

Earlier today, #Alabama extended an offer to top-30 overall sophomore Donnie Freeman.

The 2024 prospect talks about his reaction to the offer, conversation with Nate Oats, recruitment, and more.

How awesome would it be if Nate Oats retired in 20 years with a couple of national championships and handful of F4's at Alabama.

If Whitmore does decommit whoever gets him is getting a stud. He was the best player at the McDonalds game IMO

Definitely hasn’t matched the success on the hardwood yet, but Buzz at A&M always seems to be sporting some fancy threads.

Not only the great recruiting class but remember hearing Brandon Miller got some NIL deals which would make sense considering he turned down the G League and some overseas offers

“Big confidence booster,” Freeman said (about his new offer). “They came in to watch my practice today. After a slow first EYBL session, I felt my recruitment was a little questionable. Getting an offer like that on that level was a big confidence booster going into session two this weekend.

“Any time a coach of his stature comes up and offers me, it’s really an honor. Really a big confidence booster. Really cool.”

“They said they really like my versatility,” Freeman said of Alabama. “That’s the way the game is moving nowadays. They like my versatility and I can switch one through five. He said all their bigs and forwards look like me. We have the same frame, long wiry frame. He said he likes my competitive edge and long-term potential.

“I can do almost everything on the floor confidently: Dribble, shoot, pass. Get my teammates involved. They really like that. They like how I can get everybody involved and they said my IQ is ahead of my age.”

“They’re my most recent offer,” Freeman said. “I’m assuming they’re going to be the most active because of the coaching changes that have been going on with my past offers. Maryland, Xavier, and those schools with the recent changes.”

“I didn’t really see a lot of Alabama this year, but I like their forwards,” Freeman said. “Their forwards are built just like me and play like me. That’s what I really look for in a school, to be honest… I will watch some of their games tonight.”

“Any Power Five conference is obviously awesome to me,” Freeman said. “But the SEC, especially, is such a competitive conference. I feel like every night will be a dog fight. Playing against competition like that, it can only get you better.”

His recruitment will blow open in his junior/senior years if his 247 profile is any accurate. Love getting the jump on these talented freshman/sophomore players and building that rapport throughout high school
