Five-star UA signee Brandon Miller has high expectations for Tide hoops next season
Five-star Alabama small forward signee Brandon Miller will play in the McDonald's All-American Game, set to take center stage from Chicago on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN. The Tennessee native (and Crimson Tide legacy), ranked the No. 3 small forward and No. 11 overall player sat down with the media on Monday afternoon for a Q&A session.
How does it feel to be a McDonald’s All-American?
“Being selected as one of the 24 is probably the most exciting thing that’s ever happened in my life. I feel like I haven’t really took everything in yet, but I think next week I’ll probably take it in and see that I was named a McDonald’s All-American.”
How has it been getting to know Jaden Bradley this week?
“With my recruiting process, I always thought the bond was the most important thing. So with Jaden being probably the first person committing and he reached out to me as the first person he wanted to play with, it just made our bond even closer. And ever since then we just kept getting closer and closer as a brother from another mother.”
What area can you help Alabama in its efforts to make a deeper tournament run next year?
“One thing I feel l can bring: a lot of leadership. I think that’s what was missing, just a little bit of leadership. That’s why I think this season ended kind of early. But I think the biggest thing with that is just communication with everybody on the team and everybody just buying in.”
Are you recruiting anybody to join y’all?
“We have a kid now that’s on a visit now, he goes to Princeton (Jaelin Llewellyn) … I actually just got off the phone with the coaches probably an hour ago. He was on a visit. He seemed like he liked it. Hopefully we can get him to come to Alabama.”
Thoughts on this year’s Alabama basketball team?
“They performed. You know, you have good games and bad games. I think they had more good games than bad games. But at times you could see that the leadership was falling and everything was going downhill. I think it will be good for me and Jaden to come in next year and pick everything up.”
Expectations for next year?
“Definitely going to be high. All the recruits’ goal is to win a natty. I feel like we can actually win a natty.”
What kind of duo should fans expect with you and Jaden Bradley?
“It’s definitely going to be a crazy duo. It’s probably going to be something people have never seen. Him being here now, it’s really us just getting closer as brothers. He can’t play really with his toe injury. He should be back in a couple months and everything should get started.”
How do you feel the East team is gelling together?
“I feel like we should be good, I think we should come out with a dub on Tuesday for sure. You know, outside of basketball they’re all great guys. You can talk to them about anything, we all crack jokes. In the lounge the other day I beat everyone in ping pong.”
Who’s surprised you and and who’s been your favorite matchup?
“My favorite matchup is probably Dereck Lively. Well I don’t really matchup with him. I can play the point as well. I like him setting me screens, getting everybody involved, that’s the biggest thing.”
Anybody on the West team you’re looking forward to going up against?
“West Team, they have some nice players, they have my AAU teammate Nick Smith Jr. . … Keyonte George and Amari Bailey. They have some good competition. I think it should be a great, competitive game.”
Looking back on your Bama commitment, why did you pick the Tide?
“The biggest thing, like I said, is the bond. The coaches, they reached out to me kind of early and kept in contact early. That made our bond even closer, which made me choose Alabama.”
Favorite sports movie?
“Definitely the new Space Jam. I like both Space Jams but the OG is for like the (older) people and the new Space Jam is for the younger kids. I’m into the younger world, so I feel like the new Space Jam is better.”

Do we have an insight or any strong feelings one way or the other about what Shack is going to do? I think the general consensus is that JD is likely to be gone, but what about Shack? Some of what I would look for out of a portal guard would be predicated on whether he is back or not. If he's gone I'd be okay with bringing a more diminutive guard, if he's a true pg that can run an offensive. Like a Mark Sears. If Shack were to return, another big point guard would be great addition to help hide Shack's defensive liabilities.
I just don't want to have some of the same problems we had this past year, where we're too small on the perimeter and can't guard teams with bigger backcourts. Obviously you don't turn a guy like Shack away if he really wants to finish his college career with us. But if he's out of the fold, it kind of free's us up to look for any kind of guard to fit what we do, since Bradley would actually be our smallest player on the roster. And with his wingspan & athleticism, it doesn't appear like he should have many limitations defensively.

I hate that the original Space Jam was a big part of my childhood but was released like 8 years before Brandon Miller was born.

I never even watched the second one, because the first is the only one that exists as far as I am concerned.

This kid gets it. He has definitely been following our team very closely this season.
